Another four benches have now been stolen. This happened on monday night. They were the brand new benches out on the common.

Please be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police immediately.

Apparently the thieves are now so brazen that they will just stick a high viz jacket on to make people think that they are working for the council and then just steal what they want.

If you feel safe enough and see someone removing a bench ask them for some form of identity or make a note of the vehicle registration and report it to the police. Council workers will be uniformed and in marked council vehicles. Contractors working for the council should be able to produce proof of this. If in doubt, call it in.

Please help if you can.

That really is the lowest of the low.

Can the benches not be marked in anyway to deter thieves - e.g. deep carved inscriptions?

If these are commemorative benches perhaps carving the inscription would lessen their desirability (rather than brass plaques that are screwed on, and can be removed)? A more expensive process, but if benches are going to replaced every time they are stolen possibly more cost-effective in the long-run?

Just so depressing.

Tell me about it!

I reckon you should be able to just have anyone you don't like the look of locked up forever.

    • As a cafe, yes. And they kept all the chandeliers they hadn't sold as an antique shop still hanging up. They had a real mouse problem, quite well covered up, however.
    • Ah yes, that's right. Didn't Chandelier sell a huge range of different kinds of tea?  That militaria shop was bonkers.
    • Spinach took over from Chandelier, which was then a cafe but had been an antique shop of the same name. Some shops up from Target Arms the militaria shop.
    • My friend and I once did a cocktail crawl down Lordship Lane.  I think we started at Black Cherry (now Franco Manca). It got off to a good start when I knocked mine over and had to buy another one. Liquorish was in there somewhere. The crawl ended with me carrying a chair and her a set of glasses, both bought from an antique shop at some point on the crawl, can't remember where and long gone. Was it where Spinach is now? Somewhere round there. The antique shop, not Spinach!
