I wonder if they are confused and thought you meant using the brown bin for recycling paper, rather than just lining the bin with it for food waste?

Newspaper can be composted, so I can't see what the problem would be with putting a small amount of paper with the food waste.

@Sue

I was quite clear it was the brown bins for kitchen and garden waste.

I asked if the newspaper can go in too.

They said:

"You may line you bin with newspaper but not wrap. They will only take the loose food contents."

I've found some much cheaper bags online but I'm rather hoping the council will sell discounted ones themselves.

So couldn't you then line the bin with newspaper, and then when the bin people have emptied the food out, put the (presumably now dirty) sheet/s of newspaper in the green bin? Or if not too dirty, use it again for the following batch of food waste?

Or have I totally misunderstood?

ETA: I only use the blue bin for clean newspaper and put dirty paper (eg with paint on) in the green bin.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. I've got a small brown bin outside.

    • ...and so, 4 years on from the "dramatic planning meeting" that approved the "meganursery", how has it all worked out in reality? The building looks nice from the outside - but I don't know anything more. Did either of the nursery businesses on EDG fail because there was no demand for nursery places in East Dulwich? Did Carmageddon on East Dulwich Grove get worse? Were pre-COVID work patterns abandoned forever (lol)? Were some of the concerns expressed in opposition to the planning application a teensy bit overblown...? https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/southwark/mega-nursery-approved-amid-dramatic-planning-meeting/
