Hi lovely London Mums

the BBC has just called to ask our support. They are making a one hour documentary on the dairy industry for BBC3 and are looking at serious issues concerning the dairy industry such as the current crisis dairy farmers are facing. BBC 3 has a young hard-to-reach audience of 16 - 35 year olds so their programme will use humour and irreverence to tell the stories and to get the point across.

At present 2 dairy farmers a day are going out of business as they are not able to get a high enough price for their milk. If this rate continues, by 2030 we will not be producing enough milk to support our dairy industry and 53% of our dairy products will have to be imported. We love our fresh milk in the UK but this industry may not be sustainable and it could be possible that we will need to drink UHT (long life) milk in the future.

So as the programme goes about making this serious point in a tongue-in-cheek way, the presenter - Alex Riley - would like to suggest to the supermarkets that we should think about the milk of the future. He will suggest that perhaps the milk of the future should be Breast Milk as a natural alternative to dairy milk.

So to illustrate this story the BBC would like to film the presenter meeting and chatting to a group of breastfeeding mothers (they don't expect them to breastfeed on camera) to suggest his plan for the milk of the future and to get their reactions. He will then ask the group if they would consider becoming part of his supply chain - would they and their network consider supplying some of their milk to his new Breast Milk range? Of course this range will never actually exist in reality. They are just interested in getting the mothers' reactions and also chatting about their humour and ideas around this concept.

Alex will ask the mothers if he could put in an order with them and their network for a future supply of breast milk so that he can supply the supermarkets. Again of course this will never actually happen in reality.

Ideally they would like to do this some time in the week of 17th August as they are very near the end of the project and don't currently have any filming time left after that. they're looking for some mothers with a sense of humour (!) who would be happy to chat to our presenter on camera. they will pay expenses (within reason) to those mothers for their travel to the filming location which will be in London. It wouldn't take any longer than 2 hours at the very most and would hopefully be a fun experience for all involved.

Please let me know if you want to help out. I hope to hear from you soon as we need to start booking locations etc.

Thanks a million.

    • I think it's a good idea and follows the example of other towns/areas. As it says in the article, the area around the main tourist attractions in Southwark, that is The Globe, Southwark Cathedral, Tate Modern and the whole walking route from London Bridge to Blackfriars, takes a lot of maintaining and it shouldn't be a burden on regular council tax payers like us.
