Marmora Man
fjd - quite right - when describing numbers one should always use Zero no Oh. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/7397-0-should-be-0-and-o-should-be-o/#findComment-234398 Share on other sites
Huguenot
I share the conviction, it avoids confusion. However, I'm never quite sure whether to use 'zero' or 'nought'I tend towards zero, but I don't know whether I've become americanised. OutOfFocus
Old style typewriters didn't have 0 or 1 keys. We have come across spreadsheets with SE15 entered as SEl5 (lower case L),PS what is the point of this fred Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/7397-0-should-be-0-and-o-should-be-o/#findComment-234402 Share on other sites

KalamityKel
I once had a customer have a right go at me over the phone for pointing out it was a Zero rather than an oh as part of their postcode. She really wouldnt have it any other way "no dear it is oh and has always been" Someone obviously never told her... flapjackdavey
its a bit weird isnt it ? Odd that something so basic and fundamental is shrouded in vagueness ... something else that bugs me is when I go to sign on In there eyes I am a customer ..... eh ? .... how is that so? ...do I buy anything from the job centre ? no . We are also customers when we take a train journey . ok thats fair enough , we have to buy a ticket . ... still prefer the word passenger though .... and another thing .... blah blah blah Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/7397-0-should-be-0-and-o-should-be-o/#findComment-234473 Share on other sites

bignumber5
So, fjd, if someone gives you a phone number you might be confused if they start oh-two-oh, and think they have some kind of complex telephonic contact involving letters, or do you just refuse the information on grounds of inappropriate delivery? LordshipLovely
Slightly off topic, but it really bugs me when people say 020...7, not 0207. I know which way's correct an' everyfink, but it's still annoying. Also, with mobile phone numbers, people who say their number in a really weird way, because they think it's more memorable. Unless it's relayed to me in the form of 5 digits then 6 digits, or at least 5 digits then 3 and 3, I'm left completely bemused. Keef
It's a time saver though. Saying oh 2 oh at the beginning of a number is quicker than saying zero 2 zero. Although I do try to use zero when I remember. mockney piers
LL totally with you on the 020...7 thing. Not the other, I think the meter 5-3-3 is nicer and more mnemonic, but that might just be me Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/7397-0-should-be-0-and-o-should-be-o/#findComment-234519 Share on other sites
LordshipLovely
Looking back at what I wrote, I didn't mean 5-6 at all. I agree MP, definitely 5-3-3 all the way. Keef
I would normally agree with 5 3 3, but my number flows better as 5 2 2 2. Just seems to make sense that way. mockney piers
Weirdly I always remember my wife's number as 6-5. It's the only one I do. I guess it depends on the number.thinking about it mine works much better 5-2-2-2 too.
