Just watched Panaorama - seems Yorkshire Street in Oldham is fight night every night - These inner cities stories make me feel glad I live in East Dulwich or more generally London. I have been in London for 20 years this year and have been fortunate enough not to have witnessed more than a couple of minor scuffles in that time.

Is London the safest city in England for drinking? (oh and I'm not counting Croydon as London). I have tended to socialise in better areas of London, Islington, Clapham and Dulwich but have been to many other parts of London too and never much trouble.

Having said that I have been out in ED recently and a number of young people arrive in cabs, presumably from other areas, to sample ED's vibe - hope this does not result in ED becoming more troublesome.

No, they know the middle class charlie dealers sell better gear in E. Dulwich than say Croydon.

I was taking the piss Mick Mac. I've no idea how bad it is or isn't in the particular Manchester suburban street Judy has alerted us to. My aunt went to uni in Manchester in the early 80's, that's how I know about the poem. I'm not a fan of Cooper-Clarke or anything like that.

Good question though.

I don't think my answer would count for much amongst all you lot due to my age and/or lack of life experience but I will say one thing.

Much less violent crime and a lot less toleration of it as well when it did occur.

I definitely feel safer drinking in London, even in ?dodgy? areas like Brixton and Peckham than I do in places like Croydon or Watford or any of the provincial high streets that end up awash with aggressive idiots who can?t handle their booze every Friday night.

Not so sure about Forest Hill though.

Oh and I got lost in Harlesden in the wee hours of Sunday morning which was er? educational.

"Not so sure about Forest Hill though."

Brendan, we've been through this before. Even though you've grown up in a country/colony where girl guides wear stab vests, you're still not 'savvy' enough to be supping ale in Fozzy Hill. If anything the altitude will play havoc with your balance if the shandy doesn't get to you first.

Brendan I can only apologise for the slipshod and slovenly service you recieved in the Capi....er, se23 Ale house but if you point me in the direction of the offending Inn me and the peasants shall see to it's immediate torching. Both flavors indeed!

Quids. I hope you catch Leprosy.

They'd obviously upped their game from when I was in there, my card said 'yellowy-green' and 'oxblood'.

Pack it in Hooch. You wouldn't know the wine list if it swayed across your path and threw up all over you. I remember the last time you were in the Capitol. You stomped up to the bar and banged your hammy fist on the deck demmanding a "Pint o' Diesel darlin, an a packet of 'oolaroops".

I think those were the terms used on the chalk board to describe the chef?s specials.

    • As I had a moan on here about the truly abysmal Christmas meal we had at The Cherry Tree last year, I am redressing the balance by saying we had a really excellent Christmas meal at Franklins last night. Every course was absolutely delicious and  really well cooked. The staff were lovely despite being exhausted and run off their feet. In particular, my sea bass was a large portion and cooked to perfection, in stark contrast to the small dried up portion The Cherry Tree provided, from which I was barely able to scrape a teaspoonful of flesh (that is not an exaggeration). And our Franklins meal cost less than half what we paid at The Cherry Tree (to be fair, that was on Christmas Day so the Cherry Tree costs would have been higher, but that doesn't excuse the appalling quality meal). Thank you again to Franklins for restoring our faith in eating out at Christmas!
    • That is almost too ridiculous to answer but I'll take the bait. You are comparing a national charity with one branch of a small charity. Cats Protection has around 34 dedicated rehoming centres. CHAT has two, Lewisham & Canning Town and a sanctuary in Sussex. So if Cats Protection have homed 34,000 cats, thats an average of 1000 per branch. From memory this years total so far for Lewisham CHAT was over 980. I saw a few homed this weekend so we may well reach 1000 for this year. The same as Cats Protection. No need for head scratching.
    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
