...a freebie from today (didn't get one). What's it like?

Just made me nostalgic (surprise :)) for the good old days again when the Music Press was really important (or so it seemed) late 70s.

Sounds and NME were shared around our school on Thursday(?) religously - Meloday Maker less so 'for hippies'. And us soulies also had Blues & Soul.

I guess the 80s started the sliperry slope with more specialism (keraaang) and more general youth mags The Face etc.

Sad they've gone but understand why.

I loved the NME and read it religiously for about 25 years. I'd even get it a day early on a Wednesday on Fleet Street and I'd devour it from cover to cover and do the crossword. It was the musical bible back in its 70s heyday and sold around 250,000 a week back then but has sadly long been in decline and probably only sells less than a tenth of that now. I still buy it two or three times a year or have a glance at it online but it just isn't the same since I was a youngster. Maybe that's because I am so much older now. I hope it survives.

I was an avid reader of the NME from late 70's to late 80's. Sounds just didn't do it for me, especially when it (Gary Bushell) started championing Oi, although I would buy it if it had a big feature on someone I liked. Don't think I ever bought MM. Some great journos/writers cut their teeth on the music press, excellent photography too...

Indeed. I worked in close proximity to Bushell when he was a TV columnist on the Sunday People. Everyone seemed to think he was a nice bloke except me with my seething hate of his championing of the seemingly racist Oi and his 'friend' of the Krays crap. Total tosspot.

    • Eh? I'm not sure whose post you are responding to, but if it was mine, you  "clearly do not know how much it costs"? I have two granddaughters who have frequently stayed with my partner and myself in London, since the younger one was four. I wasn't commenting on the cost of taking children out in London. I was asking exactly what a holiday science club was doing with the children to warrant charging £242 for five hours! You "clearly" did not read my post!  You don't have to take children on expensive outings. As you say, there are plenty of free/cheap  things for children to do in London, and children enjoy choosing things to go in their packed lunch which they can carry themselves in a little backpack. As for buying toys etc, you can give them pocket money at the start of their stay, to spend how they want, and if they make poor choices and then run out of money, it's a learning experience, isn't it. And I suspect I am at least as old as you, and quite possibly older! But in any case, Pugwash was not asking for general comments, s/he was asking for specific suggestions for a specific boy with specific interests.
