That wealth was not shared - it's in the top 5%.

Mind you - China running the show now :)

blah blah has nothing to apologise for

the idea of making reparation - financially, not just saying sorry - is a big issue, and the long-term impact of conquest, plunder, slavery etc on native peoples has been a serious and enduring one.

JohnL, you might really appreciate the irony in our treatment of President Xi last week if you look at the history of the 19th Century British opium trade with China https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_opium_in_China which ultimately led to the rise of the Chinese Communist party - yes, it all happened a few years ago, but one would have to be rather stupid to say it has no current impact on us at all

Horrible all round. If the driver had done nothing and it was me in that situation, (I've done this in the past) pick up your mobile and actually dial 999. You are on the receiving end of verbal abuse, there's no guarantee it won't turn into physical abuse.

Had the desired effect...hope you're feeling ok about going on buses still?

People were bought and sold like any other commodity in the past- the big problem is that it still goes on today so no-one has learned anything (or chosen to disregard it) except that people are to be exploited. I am of Irish extraction btw...

I shudder to think of some of the (innocent) things that I have thought and said in my younger days that would now be considered racist, sexist, or offensive in other ways.

It's great that society has moved on in so many ways, is more integrated, and more tolerant.

Sad of course that there are still too many incidents like this, but I hope that things continue to improve, albeit a bumpy ride.

My predudices remain the influence that Russia, China, Saudi, and other rich states have on the UK and the world as a whole as we suck up to their power and riches. And of course much of the US is still deeply divided. Mate who has moved out to Memphis talks about the pecking order, largely white proffesionals live one side of the tracks (gated communities, air con), poorer black communities the other side. Mexicans do his gardening, managed by African Americans (that is where they fall in the order). I tell him he has become racist, he says he is just telling the facts.

Anyway, glad that we are still largely a tolerant society.

    • Another recommendation for Dulwich Test and Services Centre. Only been using them for a couple of years but wish I’d found them earlier
    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
    • It's not really though, is it. It's practical.  At least we're allowed Christmas lights.
