Hi

Just to add, I've had this nanny before for I think two weeks, and it was a nightmare as she kept letting me down, and not turing up for work without calling me, saying that she had left her phone at a relative's house and couldn't communicate, had orthodontic appointments and I think on another occasion had a Japanese lesson when she was meant to be working. She wouldn't answer her phone when I tried to call her, or return texts, I had serious doubts that she'd return my key, but she did, I'll give her that, she sheepishly posted it through my door when I said I'd call the police, a message i had to pass on through her reference, I believe the poster of this original post.

The other thing to point out is that she won't eat anything that's not organic and expects everything that you buy to be organic, or she gets unwell, and ... doesn't turn up for work.

I had a terrible experience with her when I was looking for a nanny nearly 18 months ago, and she's still looking for work now... being referred, by the same reference...

When you work, the last thing you want to worry about is if your nanny if going to turn up or not, and in my case she didn't, when I asked her why, she didn't reply to any of my attempts of communication, but finally sent me an email saying that she thought our family were disorganised, and that the food i.e non organic food was making her unwell. No apologies for not turning up, and no apologies for not communicating that she wouldn't turn up, apart from an email 40mins after she was meant to turn up, it was a very stressful time with her.

I might read something like this, and think there was obviously a problem with the employer i.e, me, but I can assure you that I've kept the same nanny for 15 months, after the horrors this one presented, so I'm pretty confident that I'm not harsh or unreasonable.

But that's just my opinion. If you can afford to gamble on her turning up, don't have an environmental conscience letting her stay in your over-heated house in the middle of August with all the windows closed, happy to pay for holidays even though the nanny is self employed, happy to buy and eat ONLY organic food for her to enjoy all day while you're away at work, she'll be the perfect fit for you.

Best,

Tessa

And to give you a little taste of what you can look forward to, here is one of the emails I received a day after a no show...

Hello,

I wanted to call you however I left my phone at a relative's house. I'm sorry I don't feel well enough to come in today as I saw the doctor and he told me I have slight infection and I was advised to rest for a couple of days. I hope to be well enough to come in on Wednesday. When I have my phone, I can let you know how I feel tonight/tomorrow morning.

Abby

OK. I know it's the same nanny, and I know you were a reference for Abby back then, and I called you for the reference, and I called you to pass on the message about the return of my house key. I'm thrilled that she's worked out for you, but my experience of her was not the same, and the other side that I experienced of her should also be represented. I would be happy to know the full story when making a decision about my childcare, I wish that I was given that opportunity because it would have saved me a lot of time and stress.

I'm also happy to hear that she's worked for other families with no problem, but 15months on, she's still looking for work, I'm sure she's not been sitting at home doing nothing in that time.

While healthy eating is important, I do think other things important too, like, you know, counting on your nanny to turn up, or call if she's not going to turn up, please reread the email that I received after 2 days of no shows.

I also think you're being extremely unfair to people that are looking for a reliable nanny.

While i have no vendetta towards her, why would I, she's got nothing to do with me. I do think a bit of balance and honesty is vital, i wish I was granted the same when looking myself.

Also I've been very careful in what I've written so not to make my post libellous. What I've posted isn't opinion, it's an unfortunate fact of my experience of her.

    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
