Use by date on food

I couldn't resist the urge to buy a whole chicken yesterday morning. The use by date was for the same day but I forgot about it so it was left in the work fridge overnight.

To eat or not to eat, that is the question.

smell it to check but I would definitely- subject to the smell test- cook it - maybe a little longer than usual to be sure- and eat it.

Sell by dates are one thing, but leaving meat out is another though !

Roast chickens always say the same day I think

I reheat (thoroughly) next day sometimes and never ran into problems.

"Sell by" dates are different from "use by" dates.

I'd be wary of eating some things, including chicken, past their USE by date, personally.

I reckon you've generally got a couple of days on a use by date anyway. Best before can be ignored.

There's at least 2 days extra on a use by.

It doesn't suddenly go off at 23.59

There is a huge difference between, 'best before' and 'use by'. 'Best before' can indeed be ignored, but 'Use By' dates should be kept to.

Having said that, one day may be OK, but do give it the smell test.

I had some bacon that was a week old - as it was smoked thought about it but chucked :)

I thought smoked stuff kept forever - but depends how much smoked I suppose.

best bet is to smell it - if it smells off, it is! Otherwise it's likely fine for a few days
