prdarling
I live 800m from Fairlawn, but in Southwark...am I too far away to get a place? Anyone know the distance stats for this school. Thanks x Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8090-fairlawn-admissions/ Share on other sites
BeccaL
Probably - we didn't get a place there this year and I think we were about 900m away, but were about 10th on the list. Lewisham admissions are very helpful and nice (particularly compared to Southwark), so if I were you I'd phone and ask them. hpsaucey
Depends where you are. There's a little area somewhere around Marmora/Mundania Road if I remember rightly where Fairlawn actually becomses your nearest community school so you are more likely to get in (unless the selection criteria have changed??). BeccaL
Also depends if Lewisham are changing their distance criteria - I know that for 2010 admissions Southwark are measuring distance from school to home 'as the crow flies', i.e. shortest direct route, rather than going by 'safe walking route' as they have done previously - this may work in your favour? Curly
It doesn't matter whether you live in Lewisham or Southwark. It's the distance that counts and that will change every year depending on the number of applicants and where they live (and siblings). josiebee
I went on a visit there and they told me 600 metres. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8090-fairlawn-admissions/#findComment-251801 Share on other sites
Growlybear
Last year Fairlawn was the most oversubscribed school in Lewisham, so you really do have to live very close by to be offered a place. Curly
Why not try Stillness Infants? It's just as good. If you live 800 metres away you may not get an offer in the first round but you have months before school starts and people do move away or they don't turn up on the first day. ladywotlunches
Curly - I thought the same about the borough/distance thing. But looking at the admissions book from Southwark today, some schools (ie, Goodrich) have criteria that states something along the lines of 1) Children living closest to the school who live in Southwark, then 2) Children living closest to the school who live in other boroughs. That said, visited Horniman this morning and the head there said they make no distinction on the borough, just the distance. So worth checking with the individual schools. You're misunderstanding, I'm sure. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/Uploads/FILE_43290.pdfiv) Children for whom it is their nearest Southwark community school measured by straight lineroute from home to main school gate(v) Children living nearest the school measured by straight line route from home to main schoolgateWhether or not you live in Southwark cannot be a factor, this was ruled illegal some years ago.http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/EducationAndLearning/Schools/SchoolAdmissions/PrimarySchoolAdmission/AdmissionCriteria/"4.children for whom it is the nearest community school (priority within this category will normally be given to those living nearest to the school but other children living further away may have to be given preference if they cannot reasonably be offered an alternative school). 5.if, after these criteria have been taken into account, there are still more applicants than places remaining, priority will be given to those living nearest to the school."
