At the chime of a city clock ...

I live in the Peckham Rye area, not too far from Goose Green and East Dulwich.

At quiet times in the morning and at the weekend, I can occasionally hear the chimes of a clock, on the hour.

Could I be hearing the chimes of Big Ben, albeit from 3-4 miles away, or is there a clock that you know of in the local area which chimes on the hour?

Just curious to find out!

The clock that's part of the church on the corner of Goose Green (Adys Road end) chimes on the hour (although just a single "bong" I think, nothing too spectacular).

That's more likely to be the answer, rather than the chimes of Big Ben!

You can hear Big Ben from Camberwell absolutely no problem on a still night...I'm not up late enough often enough to know about East Dulwich, but I'm sure you can despite the hill.

There's the tinny sound of the micro bells of StJohns or Barry Road then there's the distant onerous chime in the still of night of Big Ben, one of th biggest bells in the world - the sounds are so different, believe me it's Big Ben

The St. John's church actually chimes the hour each hour. I've often used it instead of a clock ....... "oh five chimes, time to start supper!"

On clear nights I can hear Big Ben from East Dulwich, love it! Also all the tug boats on New Years Eve from the Thames...

I heard Big Ben easily when I lived at the Elephant but I've never heard it from here.

A couple of years ago the Alleyn's clock was stopped from chiming after 11pm and doesn't start again until 7am. Shame.

Lambeth Town Hall, perhaps? Thems pretty strident bells and could carry.

On a clear night they might even carry the offers of t'ings from the drug dealers who congregate outside the Ladbrookes opposite said civic centre.
