Sue
Agree with Foxy. They're vile. I can't understand what anybody sees in them. I'd rather have a tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil or a mouthful of sea water.I've tried several times in the hope of growing to like them, most recently at Whitstable, but am never intending to try again :))ETA: Is that grammatical? Louisa
Not keen. Went to Galway many years ago and a pub in salt hill sold them with Guinness and soda bread. The black stuff was spot on but the other things tasted like slime mixed with sand and salt. Louisa. DulwichFox
Oysters used to be food for the poor.... They were Cheap.. You could hardly give them away.. The 'Better Off' would not touch them with a barge pole.. Now Coffin Bay King Oysters (Australia) cost $100 each.. They are now the food of the rich.. Some people will eat anything as long as it is expensive enough to make them feel exclusive. DulwichFox. Nine quid for a dozen native oysters. And they're fresher than anything you'll find in London. Jeremy
I think the place in borough market does 6 for ?5 (if you don't mind eating them standing there in the market). Hardly "the food of the rich" or "exclusive"! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/#findComment-953069 Share on other sites
Louisa
Who cares how much they cost. They're a pointless food article regardless. No flavour or taste, just an excuse for people to pontificate the imagined exclusivity of the process in which you consume these things. Louisa. Jeremy
The frozen ones from the chinese supermarket are cheap, and good for making tempura oysters, or steak & oyster pie, or stir-fried with chilli and ginger.. Louisa
Jez exactly! It's an imagined branding exercise in which people want to believe that certain food types are more exclusive than others (whether they are in fact or not!). I've seen people buy branded products in supermarkets for much the same reason, despite their dubious claim to being any different to equally non-branded similar products. Louisa. Earl Aelfheah
I love oysters, but I love most shell fish, including cockles and mussels etc. It's nothing to do with branding, or some imagined 'exclusivity'. I just like them. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/#findComment-953109 Share on other sites
Louisa
But rah what is there to love about them? You neck it after squeezing lemon and maybe tabasco on it, and that's that. Louisa. Earl Aelfheah
They have a delicacy and freshness about them.
