to send cheques and not cash

.. just had a (very large) xmas card posted through my letter box at 4pm (fairly late in the day and no other post with it) which had been quite blatantly opened

Sounds like a neighbour has returned a wrongly delivered item that was opened by mistake?

Anything that comes through my door gets opened. If it shouldn't have ever come through the door then that's just too bad. I'm sure your neighbour opened by mistake and then came and posted it through your door - it's what I would have done.

If it is address to my flat I open it. If it is not addressed to my flat but comes through my door I don't open it. It's not the addressee's fault the casual posties can't read a number. I post that back in the post box saying NOT [my number]!

Having said that - it's all very well to advise not to send cash but some folks don't have a bank account or are in debt and the bank will eat up such funds and they need cash direct to buy food.
