Laptop recommendations please?

One of the family has decided that their partner needs a laptop for Xmas and doesnt know what to buy them. I work for an IT firm but we all use Thinkpads and that's it... and all the geeks seem to build their own PCs at home.

Anyone have a recommendation for a cheap laptop that wont see the most use probably Forum use, Facebook and music... unlikley much if any gaming.

Also will prices drop after Xmas and therefore a card with an IOUAPC be more appropriate for Xmas day?

Windows 7 seems to stable enough to bother with from what I have read. Anyone feel otherwise?

Definitely the card option - silly not to wait for the sales. If you buy online, search for voucher codes or cash back deals too.

Also by doing it that way, recipient can choose what they actually want and take the blame if it's not right!

laptops aren't goods like sofa's. You can wait for the sales if you like but the specs will have moved on by January and you'll be eyeing the next sale. Ad infinitum

From what you say you want you should be able to pick up any old cheap laptop and it will do the job. But people have a habit of starting to use these things for more than they think

having spoken to others they seem to think for price and reliability go for an Acer so lets see what crops up on hotdeals!

Value for money ? Dell! Check their factory outlet deals, which are real bargain. Also sometimes, deals will overlap so you get decent bargain.

It seems to me that the most important thing is the software, that all the programs get along harmoniously and not cause the ubiquitous gliches, allow in viruses, or create freeze-ups, that are the bain of a computer users life.
