We've got friends coming for New Year's Eve whose kids have expressed an interest in seeing the central London fireworks. Rather than heading into the crush in central London can anyone recommend any local vantage points? I wondered if somewhere near the Horniman might have a good view? Or if there are any local displays happening - Burbage road perhaps??
The Penitentiary. That's what we call it anyway. But in actual fact it is called Dalston Heights on OverhillRoad and the views from there at any time of year are fabulous. On New Year's there's quite a good atmosphere and you can see everyone's fireworks going off all over. Unless it is foggy. Oh, and bring alcohol...

I agree with PeckhamRoase.

Dawson's Heights open grass area, at the very top, is definately worth a traipse at any time of the year. It's a bit unloved at the moment but even now is one of London's great secret viewing areas.

Would'nt it be great if for London Open House weekend in September views from the top floor of Dawson's Heights could be arranged....

What more would you see? I'm lucky enough to have flown in a small plane around London - now THAT's 'views'!

I don't think the views would be much more than you see already though. And who'd want to open their flats up to people who just want to look out their windows? Well, I would, for a fiver a time. But I don't live at Dalston Heights. In you come! Orderly queue now please!

Oh I agree, I knew someone lived at Canonbie and that's the best - having said that, I shall be at Dawson Heights.

I'll be wearing a black coat, have two people with me and we'll be drinking home made mulled wine I made this evening... out of flasks.

Why did no-one come and say hello?

I was only a little drunk and I was shouting HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ANY EAST DULWICH FORUM FOLK!! and I was indeed with two people drinking from a flask (mulled wine, with vodka) and no-one came to say hello.

What a fab view, and just after the fireworks finished we had a flurry of snow and then walked home.

And it's half one and I only just woke up.

Back to bed mind....

    • Wow, never had a disappointing meal there since they opened.. guess like every establishment, depends on the chef.. All for allowing an off day - good of you to post.. much better than chains - had awful service at Gail’s for eg..be it cake and tea or a meal.. They are so nice and accommodating..
    • "I tried Viet Flavour and was disappointed.  Their summer rolls especially were not at all good, stodgy and flavourless.  Pho-OK.  I'm hoping it will get better " Back in June I posted as above.  I am glad to report that either the first time I went the restaurant was having an off day, or they have upped their game.  I ordered the same things.  The summer roll was exactly as it should be, and had a lovely dipping sauce. The Pho was delicious.  My brother who was with me wanted to give it 10/10 but I always think you should leave room for improvement so gave it 9/10.  Staff were lovely.  I am so glad because I love Vietnamese food and now think I have a very good one just round the corner.
    • So do I, and I started it!!!  I have changed title.
    • Absolute crickets  starmer is pretty useless and clearly unpopular.  But it’s hard to quite fathom why when compared to his peers  should Farage get elected he will be even more useless, deeply unpleasant and wi destabilise the country in all manner of ways. But people will still give him a pass they won’t starmer    see also:  Trump vs Biden
