I have the GoPro Hero4 Session which is the new small one - cost about ?159

+ points

Excellent picture quality

- points

Not intuitive

Connecting to phone app fiddly and unreliable

Does not do all the things it is supposed without a lot of messing around e.g. loop recording

Very fussy about which SD cards it works OK with

This should be a great piece of kit, but instead is just frustrating to use and not worth the effort.

I have ?10 dashcams of eBay that are easier to sue

I've got one for snorkeling trips. Older model (Hero 3+), which has a depth rating of 40m. There are three buttons on a GoPro, which makes it baffling to learn how to use initially but you will get used to it via muscle memory like I did.

GoPro has no built in memories, but I use two 64GB micro SD card which records about 4hr in 1440p mode on each cards (roughly 2hr in 4K mode on the newer Hero4 Black). Make sure you get a UHS-I card (eg Sandisk Extreme, Samsung Pro) as GoPro records in high bitrate.

Some of the newer models has build in LCD, which is useful for framing (though probably useless when snorkeling). You can also get a live feed when used with the iPhone/Android app.

If you do get a GoPro, get multiple third party batteries (DSTE on Amazon are far cheaper than GoPro batteries, and just as good) and anti-fog inserts (essential for snorkeling/diving).

    • Not sure what you mean by "involved with firework enjoyment"? I'm all for others enjoying themselves, and I like fireworks, but if they were limited to public displays then people could still enjoy them? Having said that, I see that tickets for the London New Year fireworks start at £20 (Dawson's Heights it is,  then!) The fireworks in Brockwell Park used to be free. I don't know why those don't happen any more?
    • Really interesting discussion here. It's difficult to respect the views of people who support Farage, Trump, Musk etc. Why should we, when their views are deplorable. But then that exact 'deplorable' label, as we know, is counterproductive and drives people to double down / switch off to more progressive views. How do you actually help change minds? We're currently spiralling into dark places culturally and politically imo. The amount of open racism, even amongst front line politicians here and in the US is astounding to me. Feels like we're going backwards. The influence of social media and the tech billionaires / bros, is a powerful and largely malignant one. There was an enlightening (and frightening) bit of journalism by Sky this week about Musk's influence on British politics. He has a strange obsession with the UK and London in particular (as do many on the US right wing): https://news.sky.com/story/the-x-effect-how-elon-musk-is-boosting-the-british-right-13464487

    • I'm going to Paris with friends, staying in the 3rd arrondissement. I used to go a lot but that was ages ago so wondered if anyone has any 'insider tips'? We are interested in small art galleries, independent shops, good value cafes and restaurants that may not feature in all the many online articles or guides, thanks!
