Up till now we've only used friends and family as babysitters but this weekend there's a do which will feature all our friends and family so we're going to have to hire a random as a babysitter. My daughter's old enough now that she doesn't wake up of an evening so the person will most likely only be required to watch TV all evening.

There's a few people on this forum offering babysitting services but has anyone any advice on picking one? Would be good to give a teenager or an au pair a bit of extra cash but how do you know if they are reliable/not mental? Or indeed can anyone recommend anyone?

I always think either words of mouth ( recommendation)is the best or indeed they must have references from local families in which you can phone up/meet to ensure they have babysat for said family/families and there are no issues. I would not be keen on just hiring a random teenager or someone from here unless I know them or the family they have babysat personally.

I also would not want references from families who are not in the area, I would prefer someone local to the area.

It is all about trust really isn't it?

I think if you want a more responsible person that can handle an emergency- and get their way home again by themselves -then ?6 is fair until midnight. If you want them to read bedtime stories and hot milk etc then maybe a bit more. My 18 year old son( first aid qualification and bike)still looking for babysitting if you need any. Thanks.

    • It was indeed in the vicinity of DKH. I live on the ED estate and I could tell it must be close by because of the noise. When I left my house this morning I found the culprits litter still in the middle of the st. It looked like they had lit a whole box on fire in the middle of the road. My cat jumped out of her skin. I’ll try and report it on Southwark website same as I have had to with other illegal use this week. Any other ideas for what we can do with the photos? Maybe one of the Southwark councillors. It’s outrageous and dangerous behaviour.
    • Had another great meal there…. those that haven’t tried it, give it a go.. have a special lunch menu as well so you can get a flavour of the food.
    • If you "cotton on" and read the council announcement, it clearly states "The library will be closed from 17 November until late June or early July 2026."  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/2025/dulwich-library-closing-refurbishment
    • I’ve been seeing Lisa at goose green clinic for energy work for a year now.  Lisa is kind, caring and hugely supportive. She is wonderfully masterful and trained as a reiki master for 20 plus years. Alongside other energy work.  My time spent with her is like therapy. An emotional safe space for deep conversations and reflection followed by relaxing and energising healing work.  each experience I’ve had has been different, the end result remains the same. Feel lighter, almost euphoric and almost float home. Definitely an experience not to be missed.  https://www.goosegreenclinic.net/therapies/healing-energy-work/
