Visited this pub this afternoon and met Nick who runs it. What a great pub with great beers and food. Nick has some very positive changes that he intends to make over the coming months. There seems to be a great community spirit for this pub and I hope the community embrace and nuture it. It's a true gem and desrves success. Regards, Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Thank you for this, it is sincerely appreciated. It's not been an easy job taking on a business like The Great Ex and this kind of thing really, really helps. I promise to keep to my word and ensure that things are both different and interesting here, I will honour the tradition of this pub and will restore it's former glories and it's wonderful community based feeling. This, after all, is why I have loved moving to Dulwich so much.

It was an absolute pleasure meeting both you and John today, I hope both of your ongoing projects are very successful and I will definitely pop into the gallery to see John's work as soon as I can prize myself away from here for a couple of minutes.

Thanks again,

Nick

Nick is a legend. They were always a great pub but he's bringing new ideas to the place, Zephyr Burgers are insane!!!! I mean it, if you like burgers this is the pinnacle.

It was always a great pub but with the new management, different pop up's and great Craft beer on tap its the best in East Dulwich by a mile!!

Nick - the best of luck - But some personal feedback on this pub under previous management:

Most pubs now give you the correct glass for your drink, or at least do their best to. Under previous management, TGE just used standard generic pint glasses. It probably shouldn't make any difference (to a lot of people perhaps it doesn't) but when eg Peroni and Moretti put a lot of thought and cost into designing really smart glasses for their "premium" beer, why does TGE not use them?

Last time we went in summer, TGE had no Aperol - every other pub in London had it stocked high as it was very popular. it was what my wife wanted so had to go elsewhere.

December 2017, we had a group table booked, and were given a long table down the end by the toilets. The music over the speakers was so loud, noone could have a conversation at 8pm. Is there a better volume for early evening....

I hate those weird beer goblets so much I always ask for a plain straight glass.

Maybe the Great Exhibition just had taste :))

I do agree about the noise level though. Put me off going there on several occasions.

Agree about the noise - it was like a nightclub on a Saturday afternnon/early evening and put me off going. The beer also went downhill a couple of years ago with cask beers often off and not really looked after. Having said that it is a nice pub and could be great under the right management. Good luck.

ok, a simple man with simple tastes and no interest in asthetics. Each to their own, you may be just what TGE is looking for, and all owner/managers love feedback that's says don't change anything, I like my bar just the way it is. It's very reassuring, but ultimately not helpful.

But its not me that recommends the glasses, it's the beer manufacturer. And when every other bar is doing it, and bringing in more money as a result.....

I used to quite like it and was chatting with pals recently about why we had all kind of stopped going there. The two reasons that nailed it were:

" You try to go in there for a quiet pint midweek and there's always some **** with a microphone"

And

" Because I'm over 35 and don't wear a Deer Stalker"

Like, move over grandad! This pub is for millenial game keepers now. Try The Plough?

In current times you would think so. But its a tough revenue call- pack it out with full on 20-early 30 something friendly vibes or make it more age diverse. The truly great pubs seem to have a magic that works for all.

    • In March Oli and his team did an excellent job of the following work at a property I manage.  1. Completely removing existing broken front path. Covering and securing the void (coal shute) beneath using concrete lintels, waterproof membrane and concrete. Laying a compacted sub-base and new clay pavers. 2. Removing broken fence. Securely installing 6 fence posts and 5 fence panels across the end of the back garden. Base of posts wrapped in plastic  sheath and set in post mix. 3. Removing broken render from terrace steps and cleaning then re-rendering steps where needed and repairing other parts.  4. Jet washing rear patio. I would like to thoroughly recommend him to you for a job done very well at a fair price.
    • This reads like an article in Gardeners World where Percy Chucker is discussing how he grew his SUV so big just using diesel based fertiliser and regular waywrimg 🤣   But point well made, they are getting bigger which is partly down to safety features that older cars didn't have but also marketing as adverts seen to push SUVs into the public eye.
    • I highly recommend Phil at Four Paws doors for fitting a pet door. He has recently fitted a new microchip door for me in a very awkward tight spot. He came up with a solution for the problem of how to fit it within the space and supplied the appropriate flap as well as fitting it. The work was done within a couple of days of my initial enquiry. He was very friendly and helpful throughout and did not make a fuss despite having to work hunched under a desk and hitting his head several times!!!  His indepth knowledge was really beneficial and so much better than getting a general handyman to do it.  http://www.fourpawsdoors.co.uk/ m. 07814 406010
