We were told by a postie that there used to be a number of collection times throughout the day listed on the letter box. This was stopped and forbidden by Brussels as unfair competition for private collection services!.Madness and very irritating.

The UK has its own competition watchdog and its own politicians making dumb decisions to privatize the Royal Mail. This is the worst kind of anti-EU bullshit you are spreading.
That is utter nonsense. The Royal Mail made an internal decision to stop having set delivery times for purely logistical reasons. This way they can employ fewer staff and the ones they have can be more flexible about pick ups. This is fact.
Daily pick ups from post boxes are any time from 9-6.30. There should be something on the post box telling you if the day's collection has been made and when the next collection is.

I don't think there is anything on the box outside the Lordship Lane post office.
There was once a notice saying when the last collections were on weekdays and Saturdays, and now there isn't.
