Just because it’s council funded doesn’t mean planning rules can be bypassed although Southwark have a relaxed attitude about murals which I guess is a good thing. The four versions of the mural which were voted on did not include the lettering.

What amazes me is that many people associate East Dulwich as a 'Posh' area.

In certain 'Posh' Conservation areas people get Fined for painting their street door the 'Wrong' colour.
or fitting the wrong type of windows.

.. and yet here in 'Posh' old East Dulwich anyone can paint 'Garish' murals anywhere they feel fit.

And get someone else to pay for it! Have you seen any of the ‘cloth bags’ that were also covered by the £5K

I believe there’s a permanent rain cloud over DF’s head

Reminds me of the murals you used to see by the lifts in tower blocks during the 70s. Makes me feel quite nostalgic. Once it stinks of pee and is covered in low-level spray-paint-tagging it'll be complete.

It's bloody awful and a waste of however much money it cost.

Peckham and ED are great places to live aren't they? Why live in an area for years if so unhappy and constantly running it down?

I agree that it does appear to be a huge advert for the shops on North Cross Road and can’t help but feel that the cost should have been covered from their own (combined) marketing budgets rather than southwark’s limited funding. I understand the mural may act to attract consumers to ED, but then shouldn’t it read “East Dulwich, colourful businesses”?

It certainly brightens up the view from the Palmerstone, when you’re standing inside.

How big do you imagine the "marketing budget" of tiny local businesses like this is? I haven't seen the mural but regardless of its merits (or lack thereof), this is one of the most curmudgeonly threads on the forum for some time.

it's ok - it's not great art but not objectionable either
it's all spelled correctly and it certainly brightens up that corner
what did you expect to get on a council budget?

That seems a lot for the (mediocre) mural - £10K! Can that be correct?

If you want to see some great street art go down to Penge. Either they have some great artists there freely doing their thing or else Lewisham Council have a massive budget!

The writing's on the wall!

I thought Penge came under the borough of Bromley

I suppose the obvious question is, if you don’t like it what would you do or what exactly do you want (with examples) ?

KidKruger,

Something like the mural in Bellenden Road.

DulwichFox,

Yes could be Bromley, I stand corrected , maybe? Doesn't change the quality of street art there though.
Thanks for splitting those hairs, so helpful.

Better to split hairs, rather than atoms though smiling smiley

Has anyone managed to get one of the free bags? Haven't seen anything publicized about them

Yes well 'art' is subjective.

Yup, that's the word

I thought I'd wait until seeing it in its finished state so this morning I passed through to admire its creative merit. So, er - when will it be finished 'cos it sure as Hell doesn't look finished. Maybe, as someone else said here, that all that blank space will take graffiti to complete it. A year 6 artist could have made a better effort.

Just thought I would put up a Piccy. I suspect everyone here would of seen it my now.. ?
Ok It's Colourful but cannot see where it reflects what's in the text.

One of those things that may grow on people before they get sick of the site of it.

I do hope it does not get vandalised though..

Piccy removed as clicking on it opened up my Flickr account..
