  1. I won't join the debate on whether it is any good or not - I just want to know if it's open so I can go and my loo rolls and potatoes there today. Anybody know if it has re-opened or not?
  2. I've been reading through the posts on this as this issue really bugs me. One of my daughter's first sentences was 'mind the dog poo' as she played the role of poo spotter from her pushchair as we took my older daughter to school (not something for the baby book!). I accompanied the same daughter and her class on a school outing to Dulwich library from Goodrich school last week and spent the whole time having to guide the children so they didn't step in any dog poo (at least 10 lots in that short journey). The different suggestions as to what could (and apparently is)done about the problem seem to include: - street cleaners to clean it up - leafleting - yellow signs on the pavements - fines - calling the council to report it. I have seen little evidence of the first two but think that both could really make a difference. If the street cleaners came daily (do they?) to the streets around Goodrich school it would make an enormous difference. I've never seen any leaflets but think they could make a difference if they point out the dangers - and the consequences of school children sitting on carpets spreading very dangerous bacteria around (although I recognise it's not just an issue for children). I don't like the yellow signs on the pavements as it looks awful and really don't think it can make any difference as the dog walkers know they are not supposed to do it (whereas the leaflets might at least make them feel a bit guilty). Fines would be great but I suspect it's very difficult to catch anyone in the act (I expect a lot of the fouling happens late at night when no-one is looking). I have tried calling the council several times but they certainly didn't respond within the promised hour (I saw no evidence that it had been done at all). I also asked for some posters to be put up on the railings outside Goodrich school (supported by the deputy head) but no-one got back to me. So if the councillors are reading then please can they reinforce the role of the street cleaners in cleaning up the dog mess and could we have some leafleting in and around the Goodrich school area?
  3. I just saw this message and would also encourage people to do this. I had a baby just before Christmas at Kings and although he was fine, I was very poorly and had to have major surgery within about 2 hours of giving birth. I was incredibly grateful that my midwife managed to get some donated breast milk for my baby rather than just giving him formula.

  5. Umm - I am also a golf widow. That can't be fair. Although to be fair to the husband, he has been a complete star for the last 10 days since our 3rd baby (a boy, after 2 girls) was born and has become a full time housewife (with a bit of EDF in between times). We had a very rocky ride for a while and it all got quite scary. I know this is not the place for sentimental comments but it's Christmas and I just want to say that I love him to bits and can't believe how well he has coped with everything that has been thrown him. (And I'll leave it to someone else to guess his identify!) (and incidentally, it will be the baby, not the bin men, waking me up from now on!).
  6. Three questions: Can Saturday collections be moved so that Friern Road doesn't always have the early collection? It seems from other posts that Friern Road has always had them which doesn't seem fair. Can Southwark stop the men from coming early and pulling the bins out? (even if this is at 6:15 rather than 5:30 it still is very disturbing to be woken up twice). I have never seen the point of this - fair enough if it is 5 minutes before but not half an hour. Can Southwark start the Saturday only collections at 7 rather than 6 - I'm assuming the calculations given above are based on the collections starting later every day of the week. (And how do the noise rules fit with this? We can complain if there's private building work starting before 8 any day of the week but not if it's Southwark making the noise!) I would also be interested in knowing what time the bin collections end each day - isn't it a matter of the existing crew finishing a bit later rather than an additional lorry being laid on? I've never seen any collections happening in the afternoon. Thanks

A strong message had been sent but now it > seems UEFA is condoning simulation / diving for > the cleverest players. Strong message? dive and you get a ban - complain/appeal and you will be ok. What strong message. Uefa are a farce. Make the right decision and stick to it.
  8. After this morning's bin collecion, I have just remembered what annoys me most about the procedure. It's not so much the actual bin collection but the fact that some guy (who I assume knocks off earlier than the rest) comes along 30-45 minutes earlier than the van (sometimes at 5:30am) and makes as much noise as he can pulling the bins out of everyone's driveways. I then lie there knowing that it's not worth getting back to sleep as soon enough the van will be along to wake me up again. This was one thing that they did stop doing when I complained 2 years ago but it seems to have started again. I know - I should just complain again to Southwark...
  9. James I have two girls aged 6 and 4 - I'm very concerned about what schooling will be available to them at secondary level. The demographics of ED seem to be changing quite rapidly and better schooling is needed. This process needs to start immediatley. I'm would not be interested in more Academies. I'm interested in approrpiate schooling for middle income professional families. I look forward to hearing from you. Michael.
  10. I wonder how much time it took you to think that one up? Must be a busy day for you?
  11. Just watched Panaorama - seems Yorkshire Street in Oldham is fight night every night - These inner cities stories make me feel glad I live in East Dulwich or more generally London. I have been in London for 20 years this year and have been fortunate enough not to have witnessed more than a couple of minor scuffles in that time. Is London the safest city in England for drinking? (oh and I'm not counting Croydon as London). I have tended to socialise in better areas of London, Islington, Clapham and Dulwich but have been to many other parts of London too and never much trouble. Having said that I have been out in ED recently and a number of young people arrive in cabs, presumably from other areas, to sample ED's vibe - hope this does not result in ED becoming more troublesome.
  12. Matt - Think we are talking about different things - not sure where you got the Badge of Honour thing from. Clubs having won the champions league/european cup wear a star to represent this - as i said check out the Celtic, Aston Villa and Notts Forest shirts. Arsenal have not won the European Cup, simple as that.
  13. I guess it's better than a weekday in that respect. It is much better now the kids are old enough to get their breakfast on their own. Looks like I'll just have to put up with it.
  14. Yes it is sad - so much for British people supporting British tennis - think this shows that it was always English tennis the Wimbledon public wanted to support and few of them give a hoot about Murray. Some say its because he says he does not support the English football team but thats just an excuse not to support him, at the end if the day he won't get the same support as Henman because he is not English.
  15. Yes - have ear plugs and also only single glazing. I guess it's just what you have to put up with when you are a light sleeper. I suppose at least it's predictable (unlike the moterbikes/scooters that seem to joy ride round our street around 3 in the morning some nights).
  16. There's no need for sarcasm. I haven't posted on here before and was only trying to see if anyone felt the same.
  17. I was wondering if anyone else has an issue with the 6am bin collections that happen on a Saturday morning on Friern Road and the surrounding area. I've lived on the road for 3 years now and have taken to sleeping in the spare room on a Friday night to avoid being woken up on one of the only days I get a lie in (well till 7:30 when the children wake up). I complained to Southwark council about it a couple of years ago and for about 6 months they came slightly later but it's been early again for a while now. I'm thinking of writing again and would definitely do so if I discovered I am not the only one who is disturbed by this. I do remember a thread on this a while ago but couldn't find anything in the archives.
