whats a breastfeeding counsellor and where do we get one?
gwod replied to iaineasy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I know what you are going through. I have 4 kids, One breast fed for 3 weeks with me crying all the time, then fed with expressed breast milk or formula, One purely bottle fed, One breast fed for six months with one bottle of formula per day, One breast fed for a year. Turns out they are all are smart and healthy, I bonded with them all and none are obese!! My only regret is that I missed the babymoon during first 3 weeks of my eldest daughter's life because I was so guilt ridden about the feeding. Choose hugs and happiness (sounds as though you're natruals already!) and all will be well. -

when to stop the bottle - advise needed please

Avent make a rubbery sippy-cup teat to adapt their bottles which can provide an interim between bottle and cup. Their milk still looks as they would expect, but you get to cunningly move them forward with the adaptor. It has the advantage of being able to drink while lying down just like a bottle so that you dont have to change too much of the bedtime routine at once. Good Luck! (also, I doubt that there is much harm in drinking from a bottle for a while in the long run so dont forget to relax about it as well!!!) -
or as an executive PA (Secretarial) or a PA system ....you know... with loud speakers

Sounds as though you are all sorted out with Clare C's remnants but in case you want more, I have found these people fantastic, they sell felt squares and pre-cut shapes which my girls have found fantastic fun. http://www.art2craft.co.uk/index.php/fuseaction/shop.category/category_id/2?session_id=1262946487b1508dd5f1203cd4a4cb5b0692bbebbf Happy stitching!

The St Barnabus todd group is now held in the Dulwich Village Hall - in the back room which has its entrance on Gilkes Crescent by the Audi Garage - not quite free but v cheap and v friendly, and always a cheery thing to start the day with the Hokey Cokey! 10 am start I think

Not really a saying, but...Noel Desenfans, founder of Dulwich Picture Gallery and of Desenfans Road fame's name is derived from his beginnings in France. As a orphan of unknown parentage he took part of the name of his first home; L'Ecole Des'Enfants Perdue, which was later anglisised to Desenfans.

Beaba Babycook- would you recommend it?

I had one for my youngest 2 children and it was fantastic. I agree that they are fiendishly expensive and I would have never have bought it myself (it was given it by someone who had finished with it), I have already passed mine on but look out for one 2nd hand on ebay, I think they turn up more often in France as that is where they are made. Happy pureeing! -
When I was growing up and my room was nasty my parents did not hassle me about the mess but did insist that I always close the door so that they did not have to look at it. No more arguments and a fast lesson in the cause and effect of mess - Genius!

I went back to work full time very soon after the births of my first two children, as I was the main breadwinner in the family and I loved my job. With the arrival of my two younger children I became (and remained) a stay at home mum. I just wanted to let you know both situations were fine! Of course each has challenges but I enjoy it either way and all my kids seem equally well adjusted and happy. There's no "right" answer....you can make either situation work for you - just pick the one that YOU want. (....and if you find its not what you want, change your mind!) P.S. I believe this philosophy fits nearly all parenting decisions!!

Posted by: daizie Today, 06:56PM oh tell us what shes called what, and have you all tease and critisise the name thats taken me years to come to terms with?!!!

9 years on I think it's a fanatastic name - and particulary suited to that daughter....(I have 4) but it took me quite a few years to come around to it ....and I've never met another one.

Not to worry Mockney Piers, sometimes the boys do get their way... My second was born a little early, in a bit of an emergency which quickly put me under a general anaesthetic. By the time I came around, I found that while I was unconsious Mr Gwod had already named her - she had the wrist band, and he'd rung the parents and everything. It was a done deal. He says it was a name we had discussed, but I don't remember a discussion only him commenting that it was nice and me saying hmmm. Might have been something to do with it being New Years Eve...he was a little tired and emotional even before the event...

Not Tristan...at least that would be "All Creatures Great and Small" ish. Tristram as in "...and Isolde"! Also I think I can trump your Tu-pac with the kid at my kids' school whose name is Enoch. For real.

Also, I got talking to a mother of twin boys at London Bridge last month, she told me she had called them Tristram and Beowulf. I wasn't able to muster the correct response...I think I just made a face.

Delaying school start date for August-born children
gwod replied to powercow's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I wonder whether any academic advantages of holding her back a year may be outweighed by the potential social difficulties she will encounter when she has to justify for the rest of her school career, why she is not in the "right" school year. This may impact an her performance more than just being among the youngest, as "fitting in" becomes so important as they get older. I am an August baby, and can honestly say that I never felt pushed at school and am therefore glad I was in the same year as my yeargroup. My kids school (also Southwark) starts the January intake in a separate class so there is only about 4 months between the youngest and the oldest being taught. Also I think that girls are often ready for school earlier than the boys, and as the research points out - the age disadvantage does level out in the end. Good luck making the right decision for your little person. -
....and this really is my mother-in-law's dental practice....really. http://www.dentithanddentith.co.uk

One of my kids cut her head last week and the wound was glued together at A and E at Kings. All is well, the glue did a great job, she is fine and healing nicely but her hair has a large area of hard clumpy glue in it - How do I get it out?

Homeopathic immunistations have not undergone the 10 or 15 years of clinical trials that standard medicine has to undergo by law. The evidence for the efficacy of homeopathic immunisation is entirely 'anecdotal'. This doesnt worry me very much with topical aplications of alternative therapies, but I would not consider injecting untrialed substances into myself, my children, and especially not my babies. Good luck with your decision Skip, the first of many many moral dilemmas ahead!!
