Moos Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I also like 'mad as a box of frogs' Ever one for the crude alternative, I'm a big fan of "mad as a shit-house rat". "shaking like a shitting dog" although confess to robbing that one from peter kay. A variable bit of plagarism from Jack in Father Ted has led to the creation of the wonderful expletive "Arse Biscuits" for a cleaner one, I still find a lot of use for "robert's your father's brother"

I have only ever played squash a few times - absolutely loved it, but put off by the price of courts in London, meaning that the only people who I meet who play are far too good for me, having taken their investment seriously!

Have just watched it Paddick seems a bit too reactionary to me - willing to expose the loopholes in the policy making of others but with ill-defined stances himself in many areas. The areas in which he's strong minded seem to be the areas which could do with a little discussion and moderation. All of the negative points that this thread has highlighted about Boris were amply demonstrated, Paxman using his patented technique of bullishly handing out just enough rope. For me, it's a one horse race.

Child Trust Fund (Lounged - not specific to ED)
bignumber5 replied to CamberwellOz's topic in The Lounge
I'm a big fan of premium bonds http://www.nsandi.com/ but I've heard kiddy trust funds are a sound idea - no kids myself so haven't really researched it. One fairly user friendly guide http://www.natwest.com/personal02.asp?id=PERSONAL/SAVE_AND_INVEST/SAVINGS_ACCOUNTS/UNDER_16 -
So it might seem a shame

i phoned up jags and they said to come and have a look around anytime they were open. went for a look round a day later and was told that I needed to make an appointment to do so, as they were on a team building day, and watched 4 instructors and 2 receptionists have tea and biccies while a 5th instructor made me said appointment, which took longer than a quick shuftie round even the biggest of gyms would have taken. Had already wasted a half hour walk each way. Cancelled appointment and now just run in the park. Planning on summer gym use, was thinking Peckham Pulse looked worth a short bus ride. I think the absence of a gym in ED that is affordable, clean, and staffed by helpful people is a suprising deficit given the area demographic. Hamlets: not clean or particularly helpful ED Fusion: ditto JAGS: didn't make it past the unhelpful staff ESPH: not affordable Peckham Pulse: still an unknown My gym at college managed to hit all the buttons, and would even if the price were upped to non-student rates. have never found a replacement, and have just got progressively more tubby since graduating.

I truely believe that there's a difference between accepting judgement on one of your actions after the fact and pre-emting that judgement by acting in a certain way, but I am willing to entertain the possibility that I am being naive. The alternative makes me sad. I've acted against my personal preferences in professional scenarios before, and in decidedly grey-area situations, and have been willing to accept the judgement of that by colleagues who personally don't agree because as similar people it offends their personal sensibilities, but I know that I acted appropriately for my role as a professional in that scenario. I think that is what Blair is saying in your link, seanmac, but then I guess it's all down to interpretation.

Coming from a background of professional detatchment/objectivity myself, I think it's wholey possible to believe something in your personal life and not let it affect your professional life. to agree with David_C, to say that there is no place for religion in politics is, in a strange turn of evens, removing freedom of speech from those in public office. Surely those with strong feelings/faith will gravitate towards a political stance that has similar views - Catholics to a pro-life stance and so on. Martin Luther King and Ghandi both had strong faith, and it didn't make them fanatics, did it? Yet their impact on political issues made history, they opposed the norm and now that norm would be considered extremist. To look back on the 10yrs of Blairdom, I do not find myself (even now this issue is being emphasised) thinking "now that administration was so... well... Catholic" so i'd say he did a good job in professionally detaching faith from business, most of the time. Whilst I do not think the invasion of Iraq was justifiable, I also don't think that a PM who stayed out only because he's catholic and they're Muslim and that wont look good, in some dreadfully misguided act of positive discrimination to safeguard against being labelled as a fanatic himself, would be any better than a religious crusade. Answer: remove faith from the equation. Whatever reasons he had for making that call (and I'd truely love to know what they really were) I genuinely believe that faith was NOT one of them.

Consultation on 20mph zone across East Dulwich?

Not sure we can start licencing people to walk on public pavements, may cross road without walking licence if with experienced walker of 4 years or more, different classes of licence for different types of pedestrianism etc. Anyway, country kids will be walking around on parents farmland without licence for years before they can legally take test. Where all of above silliness is heading is that whilst car vs pedestrian causes injury, pedestrian vs pedestrian causes small bump and either British over-politeness or name-calling depending on personality. Your "no matter how fast or slow" bit is what determines reckless driving, speeding etc in the event of an accident. Kill a kid when doing 25mph and you don't get nicked for manslaughter. For what it's worth, I think people who text while crossing the road are muppets, and should they end up getting pranged by a motor doing the legal limit, their problem. But drive under the limit etc and (however harrowing the experience might be) you will not be in the wrong, and the fact that you wont end up in chokey will demonstrate the police agree. Speed limits exist to protect everyone, even if only in a legal/moral sense - obey and no blame, break and you're on your own. -
Well then you'll just have to get there earlier next time, wont you!?!
