Hey, I don't make the rules: In this liberal society, if I had a cactus who came home and told me that he'd got a holly bush in trouble, I'd support him in taking on his responsibilities, and look to educate for the future. But we can't enforce human ideals on a cactus. In the wild, it's spike then move on. To tie a cactus down to the first holly bush he soils is to defy his natural instincts. That's just cruel.
  2. I like WS. I go for a wander in there every once in a while, like amnesiac unaware of identical previous visits - see window display, walk in enthusiastically, look at the clothes, smile, look at price tags, sigh, walk out again. If we're on about staying on topic, shouldn't we be discussing the forthcoming opening of white stuff ;-)
  3. *puts on best faux-borat voice...* MY WIFE! ;-)
  4. Been off posting recently, and similar anti-social behaviour at drinks, just hid in a corner and didn't really give the newbies a proper welcome, so sorry all. Will be much more chipper next month. If annaj says she's free, then I spect that means I am too! :)-D
  5. Had an afternoon away from the books, wandered on South Bank (as coroborated by MikeP), then drank beer in the sun - got a headache, which I felt was a badge of honour of an afternoon completely wasted. Magic.
  6. Well then it's up to the holly's owner to deal with any little cuttings. But then if you let them out when they're new and you haven't had them re-potted, what do you expect?
  7. Actually Goodliz I do see the point of this post - the TFL ticket machine thingies ring up how much the ticket costs, so he will have known full well that the till had registered one thing and he had charged you another. There's nothing you can do about it, as the "no changes will be made after you've left the shop" thing is the same in small shops as big supermarkets, but i sympathise. That shop is normally fine (cleanliness aside) unless you challenge the owner on anything - I've been in there before and rummaged thru the goods because the ones in front are out of date, and he has told me not to; when I've told him it is because things are out of date, he says "ok" but never makes any effort to remove dated goods. And when others have reached for something and I have told them that the one they've picked up is out of date, he has told me to mind my own business - a valid point, i s'pose, but even in the cut-throat world of trying to run your own business, I think knowingly selling things that are out of date is a bit off. Anyway, that's a separate point. Summary: I think he probably realised that he'd sold you the wrong thing, but after the fact it's your word against his and he just doesn't back down, so you're stuck. There seems to be a moral to the tale, but Poo situation to be in.
  8. ...for getting us though 7/7/5 with real leadership ...for the congestion charge ...for oyster cards and bendy buses ...for doing what was best for London even if it wasn't popular at the time and, since it probably hasn't been easy ...for taking decent holidays ;-)
  9. I thought that those of us who are a bit miffed about the election outcome could use a happy-place. This is a place to reminisce about the 2 terms of Red Ken. Please, no heated debate (we've either already done it or there are other threads going...) Posts that follow on from the thread title "Farewell Ken: thank you for..."

  11. A fine thread MM, sort of long-term lay out the evidence. Perhaps someone who is confident enough can post a summary of his prospective mayoral promises, then we can quote them as he fulfills any (or has to about-turn). That way, we can monitor his progress!
  12. Mortified. Tory voters must be feeling the momentary pride of Dr.Frankenstein watching his creation come to life, before realising what unspeakable things it would come to do. MM - right you are, it's effectively a 4 year trial now, tho I suspect the next thread about Boris wont be that far away!
  13. just been there - much more fun than this politics nonsense, well thread-ed!
  14. annaj on our wedding day warm orange evening sun glinting off the Colloseum in Rome blood red sky behind the houses of parliament, seen from the 10th floor of St.Thomas' Hospital And many, many more. Living in NZ I used to be frequently late to work as I stopped to watch the sunrise in the bay. Moments where you're struck by how beautiful something looks can be so personal - I've always wanted to get better at photography to try and share how I see things. For a while I thought that the magic was that it couldn't be done, and that you really did have to be there... then I discovered Peter Lik photography. Blurry Good thread, MM.
  15. But not many are aware of that, Bren, that's the real problem: everyone in the world thinks they're a great driver...
  16. A fair trial? Not your usual standard of debate, MM - I might almost never agree with you on politics but I usually have to conceed that you argue a good case... this one is the same priciple employed by Northerners slating the South ;-)
  17. Wot you all said above. Isn't this the point where someone posts that they think it's a silly law and they do it and can't believe they got caught once...? Any takers? seanmlow? ;-)
  18. I'll second "pop", although I don't think you can make that a generic healthcare workers word: nurses word, that is, we was usin' it for ages before you doctors popped on the bandwagon... ;-) My interested-in-what-you've-said-response for ages was a Jack Sparrow "that's interesting", until pirates 2 and 3 came out, which were so shocking I felt i needed to put some distance between myself and the captain. My glad-i-got-it-right-inappropriate-happy-phrase is a rather shocking, connery-esque "schplendid"...
  19. Agreed, dc. I've voted previously where my vote goes to someone that I'm not entirely happy with, but it's helps to make sure someone highly undesirable doesn't win. So while my personal allegience is to Ken, a vote for anyone other Johnson or Barnbrook will win you my gratitude ;-) (actually, add Craig to the list of no-no's: anti muslim expression, pro family (= anti gay)... nut-job dressed as a Sunday-School teacher...)
  20. I'm in over my head...
  21. Rings a bell... now what about the poem from the Number 12? ;-)
  22. Or maybe we have a little friendly respect for the difficult position the forum admin team are in, and just let it go?
  23. And that is why I tend towards dirty limericks and rugby songs - far more jolly. Does everyone know the good version of "Alouette"? ;-)
  24. Not even close to being. I tend towards the somber side, Housman and the war-poets. The poem that I remember moving me at an early age was Yeats: I know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above; Those that I fight I do not hate Those that I guard I do not love; My country is Kiltartan Cross, My countrymen Kiltartan?s poor, No likely end could bring them loss Or leave them happier than before. Nor law, nor duty bade me fight, Nor public man, nor cheering crowds, A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds; I balanced all, brought all to mind, The years to come seemed waste of breath, A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death.
