DaveR Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why compare homophobia and racism, like it's a > contest? A contest that we've debated the existence of before... There was some feeling that casual homophobia is tolerated more than casual racism, with the expression "that is so gay" as a derogatory statement being tolerated in a way that a racial equivalent just wouldn't be. It's not that one type of predjudice is more offensive than the other, but how widely tolerated it is.

To the Australian Beer gut sat outside Franklins today...

MW74, you seem genuinely shocked that you haven't had a reply - did you really think you'd get one? Assuming said Offender is a forum reader (and that's a big-ish assumption), why would he identify himself to you? What would he possibly have to gain? Don't get me wrong, sounds like he was being rather unpleasant and I don't think I'd have felt very comfortable if I'd heard him, but if you require an actual exchange of dialogue for closure then maybe take him to task at the time, in person. Or accept that he's a muppet and don't let him rile you. Such a person is unlikely to have much of an impact on your life unless you let him. -

Gotta say I think barriers are a good thing - an extra 30 seconds each day at p.rye station would be favourable to the once-a-week 10min queue when the inspectors descend and huge groups of morons try to argue their way past with clever "oyster at home" based ploys.

Oh come on people, TV to the rescue: a post-it on the pillow saying "I'm sorry, don't hate me" a la sex in the city, or at the alter a la 4 weddings

Looking forward to what AcedOut has to say this morning if based on the above post! Nice to have met you, by the way, owe you a beer next time on account of knackeredness kicking in just before my round... ;-) Good to see everyone, although arriving after work looking like an Old English Sheepdog from the rain meant i spent more time drying off than mingling so didn't get a chance to say hello to most people. Would like to wade in to support the fine reviews of The Duke: never been there before (mostly because of being an un-adventurous wuss and not heading to... nunhead) but I was really impressed. They've managed to do the place up but still keep a really welcoming atmosphere. I'm sure this is in no small part due to the lovely staff, who (since I missed the drinks at FHT and Hoopers, which see to be the benchmark) are by several miles the friendliest bar staff i've come across, not just in ED but anywhere. Ah, and let's just give a brief moment to food. For anyone who didn't get any of the pies, it's because I may, in fact, have eaten ALL the pies... Top class fodder - very keen to check out their sunday roast.

Adventure bar - East Dulwich (Lounged when no longer about same)

I thought inside72 was a dive that was trying too hard to be cool, so am i allowed an opinion? (Actually, still yet to go to Adventure, but don't do solo drinking and now can't find anyone to go with! So no opinion to express... as yet...) I've never understood the EDF hatred of chains, because any small business with ambition that is successful will eventually become a chain: once upon a time there was only one starbucks, one maccy d's. I don't go to either of them, not because they've done well and so become a chain and that offends me as an armchair lefty, but because the product in question is shite in both cases. I'm not put off going to Adventure by the fact that there's another one or two somewhere else - to that i say well done owners, good to see anyone in a position to expand their business, whatever it may be. I am put off by reports of a cocktail bar that serves low quality, low strength cocktails. I am put off by that fact that all of my local friends have all been there already and none are willing to entertain the possibility of going back. Bugger all to do with the number of branches it has. -

I bottled it/ couldn't be arsed in the end: I had a rough day at work and was looking appropriately scruffy when I was given a brief description of it so that I could make an informed decision. As a life-long hater of Hollyoaks, and someone who grew up in Bromley and didn't like that much more, I just couldn't face the whole concept. Not going to leave it at that, tho - will find out for myself another time. Opening nights are always a bit more dressy etc than things end up staying, so may give it a week or 2 and then try it. (Although reports here of cocktail quality/strength are alarming...) -
Got to say that I've never seen a thread locked where I couldn't see why. Sometimes I'd rather have watched things play out, but I can always appreciate why that hasn't happened. But then I've never been cut off mid-rant by a thread being locked, I'd imagine it probably feels less easy to be understanding if you are the one who gets cut off.

Never Ending Story (book shop) closing down?
bignumber5 replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
so what's replacing the bookshop? Hope it's another bookshop or similarly useful thing, can do without another offie, trinket store or cook-wank shop... -
haven't ever ordered food in the herne, so can't comment, but have always found the staff cheerful and friendly when ordering the beers, even when they look busy and hassled. Also, top marks for the guv'nor for responding above - nice to see. will be in at some point for a burger as an anonymous-mystery-shopper-type ;-) As a point of curiosity, how long is too long to wait for pub-grub, in the opinion of the forum? I seem to find myself thinking of a quality.vs.time trade off - standards can slip if served in 10mins, after that I reckon I find myself with the "it'd better be worth the wait" attitude.

Does anyone travel to Paddington ...
bignumber5 replied to Amelie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Amelie, I think Huguenot was just being silly re: how much longer that drive will take, plus the sting of the congestion charge. If you're thinking private transport is the only way (and, for the record, I think that may be a mistake) then give some thought to a scooter rather than a car - rush hour in town is much faster negotiated on 2 wheels, but is also a bit scary if you've never done it before, so a personal judgement call. For the record, my route to Paddington is Bus 12 to lambeth north (I hate changing for anything at E&C, and L.north is fairly sleepy even at rush hr) and then Bakerloo all the way. takes a bit longer but gets you onto both the bus and the tube early enough in their journeys to get you a chair. I am happy to sacrifice a few minutes in exchange for a seat all the way, but that's a personal choice! -
Pathetic old racist fart on Frogley road (Lounged)
bignumber5 replied to Shu.Kurimu.Sensei's topic in The Lounge
On the Sushi vs Frog arguement: I had a french mate at uni who I called frog and he called me ros bif, much like others have described (Horsebox). But that's a friend, and a bit of banter with unspoken but clearly established rules that we are mates giving eachother a bit or flak for the sake of being jovial. I would not wander round a Paris street late at night randomly calling people "Frog". That's the distinction. Similarly, an Asian guy that I work with often ends playful arguements with "it's a brown thing, you wouldn't understand". I seriously doubt he uses such an expression outside of pre-established boundaries. There are terms that are "offensive" depending on who delivers them, to who and in what context. The same term can be harmless, or even a display of affection, in different hands (my best mate from uni greets me with "ay opp, c**t", and I do the same back to him). The OP describes a situation of a stranger throwing out a term based on bugger all but appearance. Offensive. When we lived in NZ, racism was an interesting thing to watch being casually indulged in: racial relations with the Maori population were being focussed on so heavily that it was almost as if the White population had "used up" their racial equality card on one group and needed to blow off steam with casual comments about other groups. Are people on this thread viewing the OP's experience differently because it seems to refer to intolerance towards someone Japanese and we have "used up" our equality on the African and Carribean population of our area? I don't think that anyone would think it ok to call a black person "rice&peas". So what's the difference? Also, Brendan - I know you're taking the piss with the punching thing, but lets not rule out the possibility that wanting a fight and trying to provoke the OP may have been the motivation behind this whole business. I think that while you are obliged by chivalry and fairness to smack them, you are obliged by common sense and self preservation to keep your head down and keep walking, lest you get a screwdriver in the belly. -
Does that mean you've now got a spare Mrs *Bob*? ;-)

Used my card in Somerfield a couple of days ago, 3 transactions for just shy of a ton each made in Senegal this afternoon... Fucking Fucker-dy fuck fuck... Still, at least Natwest picked it up pretty quickly (got the call about half an hour after the forth transaction attempt was rejected), and the lady from the fraud team said that I'd definitely be entitled to a refund, although she had no idea when. Can't have it all, i s'pose.

Next EDF Drinks - Friday 1st August at The Gowlett
bignumber5 replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
Have been at a family thing all day and thought we'd taken it easy and left in good time, but have felt pretty poo all day so perhaps not early enough. Still, lovely to have met newbies and met up with regulars, fine times as always. having a bit of trouble remembering many new names, but hello to the 2 Mr's (Moos and Buggie), fiskaroo and Ms B. Also, first time at the Gowlett - it's rather cool in there, isn't it? thought the staff were just lovely, which is not always the case at these things (memories of being sneered at in the Vale). As SteveT may have alluded to, serious pizza for putting down a lining! Just going to have a glance at the pics now... -
we see to be back with bat in hand - must have been a decent morning session. S/A 48 more runs off the last 4 wickets - perhaps not a totally lost cause after all...

Perhaps Mr.Admin would consider making the monthly thread on the subject of the next drinks into a sticky thread in the lounge, to keep it in a wonderfully eye-catching place?
