  1. Really James? Have you actually seen their consultation - they have changed it from Nunhead to Nunhead/East Dulwich so I completely disagree that they have been clear at all, and the consultation is a sham and it's not about what parents want - this is public money if there is no need for it public money should not be spent on an unnecessary school. Another great letter from Tessa - how refreshing to have a politician that listens to the people they represent.
  2. Tanza, I appreciate that school allocation is an emotional time but if you seek to hear from parents at a school whilst telling them that you don't want your child to go there but might have to and require comfort then surely you must see that can sound insulting? I have a boy in Y5 at a vibrant diverse local primary school where lots of children have English as a second language (which doesn't mean they can't speak English it usually means they speak another language as well as English which is more than I can) All I can say is that I have visited the school and was super impressed and the children I know that go there are happy and thriving. Whilst single sex isn't everyone's cup of tea I for one am delighted to have an outstanding secondary school on our doorstep. I hope that you feel able to get behind the school, doubtless plenty of your sons classmates will also be going.
  3. Bloomers on Lordship Lane near The Patch. Sharon the owner is lovely and sensible and helpful.
  4. Given that my children are 10 and 7 years old you would have thought I'd have worked something consistent out by now. But I havent. Can anyone reccomend a half term holiday course which will allow me to drop about 8.30 and pick up at 5.30. All the usual suspects (nimble arts, holiday drop off, jags, hamlets) seem to start later and/or finish earlier. Thanks
  5. Another vote for chap in Rye Lane Market - very reasonably priced and pleasant professional service.
  6. My daughter had a build a bear party last year. We all got the bus to Covent Garden, I limited the price to ?20 per child for which they got an hour in the shop and their going home present (ie the bear) My daughter then got a loyalty card and the points she got from the cost of the party gave her about ?20 credit. They do a money off deal with pizza express round the corner which does a very reasonable children's menu. Given the cost of a different type of party; hiring a venue/entertainment/party bags/catering it was rather cheaper and all the party goers loved their bears. Obviously there are cheaper ways to do a birthday party but it was really special and less expensive than I thought it would be.
  7. Yes Bloomers on Lordship Lane (near The Patch) have a box for old/unwanted bras that they recycle/donate for a charitable cause (possibly sent to disadvantaged communities in Africa - I forget the precise details)
  8. Certainly at my children's school staff monitor lunchtime and children have to finish their meals before they have pudding so there's no chance of skipping the meal and having double pudding. I understand that yoghurt and fruit are an option every day and cake is a fairly frequent although not permanent option, occasional cheese and biscuits. meals are healthy and balanced with daily salad bar and pizza/chips type option only on Fridays. Personally I am impressed with the standard and variety, I do encourage my children to take the non cake option and they claim that they do sometimes. All I remember of school meals are pur?ed veg from an ice cream type scoop - makes me gag thinking about it.
  9. Sounds fab. How much will it cost to use the ice rink and are there any age restrictions?
  10. Sharon in Bloomers is a legend. Good stock and prices. Highly recommend
  11. Oh poor Jack! Always friendly and helpful to us, unpatronising to the children with whom he is super popular and I've always found him to be very laid back. He's not inexperienced, in the years he's been at the school I've never found him abrupt or immature.
  12. Thank you Cllr Mills. Very clear statement of the Council's position. Much appreciated The petition is nearly at 500 signatures.
  13. I found Merrifields unbelievably rude. I highly reccomend the cobblers in rye lane arcade. Great customer service, excellent workmanship and very very reasonably priced
  14. I have seen no evidence of a primary place crisis in 2016, quite the opposite. James have you noticed that not a single person has posted in support of your contention that there should be yet another primary school. If you think there is a crisis how does this square with your opposition to the extension of Ivydale? On the other hand many of the people you seek to represent plainly feel strongly that another primary runs the risk of compromising a secondary school that is needed. You say that you are loyal to the campaign for a secondary school and I don't doubt that but that really isn't coming across as your priority right now. I have yet to hear any cogent argument as to how a petition to David Laws, who has suggested in correspondence that a Primary and secondary could co exist on the hospital site, making it plain that local feeling is against that is inappropriate or runs the risk that he would say ya boo sucks well you won't get a school at all.
  15. I would like to say a huge thank you to Tessa Jowell for her sensible and proactive stance. What a compelling letter.
  16. There is a significant and pressing need for a secondary school in East Dulwich (council projections bear this out) the hospital site is the only available land. There is no need for a further primary but yet another Harris has received approval. The concern is that an unwanted and uneccesary primary school once approved needs a home and the petition doesn't want that to be on the hospital site. James your post makes no sense to me, to me it seeks to scaremonger (the petition runs the risk of losing a secondary) without any or any sensible suggestion as to how you reach that conclusion. I recommend that you read the very many comments on the petition from the people you represent.
  17. I've signed. A primary school on that site isn't needed and would be a waste of public money at the expense (in terms of money and space) of resources that are desperately needed.
  18. Distinctly underwhelmed. Slow and indifferent service. Ordered for 2 - 1 of us got a microwaved quiche - hot in parts and cold on the bottom with no garnish my lunch partners food arrived after I had finished. Did complain they weren't bothered. Still it was better than the place beginning with C down the road where we waited for 15 mins and were seated before being told (without apology) that there was a 30 minute wait for food. Seriously I cannot understand how they get any business. Moan over.
  19. Right I've sent my email to Tessa, only took a few minutes and made me feel better. If you are worried about secondary provision, whatever bid you support don't miss this opportunity to make your voice heard or you can hardly complain about it when it's too late and we have no school or one that has been squeezed in to an inadequate space.
  20. So I have signed and passed on to my friends too. Will definitely write to MPs too, thanks for details
  21. My boy is 9 and a voracious reader - book a day. We get a lot from charity shop (big one on LL always has several books that suit us), regular visits to our brilliant libraries deals on kindle and some book swapping with friends. We do amazon and sainsburys and the book house but Chener has such a great range that we sometimes push the boat out. Also try the boot fairs regularly held by St John's Heber or DKH schools - lots of parent stalls with books
  22. Have you tried Goose Green, Dog Kennel Hill or St Johns and St Clements? All ofsted good schools with loyal parent followings? I know Goose Green has an open day soon (tomorrow or day after I believe) Good luck, it sounds very stressful! On a seperate note it just shows you how important it is that local parents lobby hard for a new secondary school - all these children are going to have to find one sooner or later.
