Appears to be a burst water main, and the water at Herne Hill Junction looks to be a metre deep! Impassable, so avoid, traffic already building up.

I would strongly advise against cycling through the Rotherhithe tunnel on health grounds alone - it is not well ventilated from car fumes! I do the route via Greenwich foot tunnel daily, it is 10k each way from ED. 28-30 mins for me on a single speed fixy so probably quicker if you have gears. I agree on the ground anchor point, very secure. Have also wired the shed into our burglar alarm system and it doesn't hurt to put a sign on it to that effect.

Couldn't agree more Jeremy. ED is a great place to live, I've been here since 2002. As others have already said, relative to some other areas of south London within the circular is still good value. Not all true, I am a (ahem, front-office banker) and proud owner of a 4 bed house near station bought in last 16 months for c.600k. If you search hard enough, the properties are there.
