  1. Then & now. Standing at my front gate now, looking down the road, so many things have changed, it?s got so great it showed. Some things have multiplied, from one to three or four, gone is the steel Dust Bin, collected from my back door. Now there are coloured Wheelie bins cluttering the street, most are over flowing, so mind where you place your feet. Take your own Bins out into the street, on the date to collect, if it is not put out, it?s plain the date you did not recollect. There used to be steel lines, let into the surface of the road, for the Tram that carries passengers that?s added to its load. Now there are Yellow lines painted to stop you waiting, just one of those modern additions most find aggravating. Mum?s would put babies pram out, near the gate to stay, local kids could keep an eye on baby in between their play. If it rained they put the hood up, or the shade to shield the sun, the young girls did this mostly in between enjoying their fun. The pavement was made up with sandstone slabs all in line, we often used it to play at Hop Scotch they served just fine. The paving slabs have gone now, Tarmacadam in its place, no tripping over raised edges, and landing up on your face. The green trees we had, have gradually died or taken away, no leaves blowing along the road, or branches wave and sway. No Privet Hedges left at our boundary wall, clipped into shape, just a bland brick wall, not a very attractive view they make. Those scrubbed sandstone front steps drying in the midday sun, no longer cleaned that had been washed, so nice since time began Not only do the steps get neglected, there is nothing you can do, ? Oh I forgot ? It?s now the place to leave your pet Dog?s Pooh.
  2. East Dulwich Fire Station before the Telephone Exchange was built
  3. I think it is him, his car rotted away but his driving licence was in his pocket. You can read he holds a group twenty nine licence Chariots of fire.
  4. I have attatched a picture of the dresser I had in mind, one with the shelves getting larger as it got taller to accommodate the larger dishes, as you can see the shelve section does come apart. In the war we were bombed our Dresser was brought down on the table with us underneath it and all the plates and dishes got broken, some used to have hooks in the front of the shelves to hang the cups. Although it might look that the shelves are not made to come off some are screwed from underneath to fix them to the cupboards below. A clue is if the whole thing would not pass through the door it must come apart.
  5. Sue. If these are very old shelves from a dresser that is smaller at the bottom and the shelves get wider as they go up then the plate lip will be rebated into the shelf, I would not advise using a Plane as they could be pin nailed this would break a modern electric plane blade, or at least damage it. There is a cheap filler that won't cost much thats if you are going to paint it. If you can use a pair of Pincers starting in the middle as they might be rebated into the ends as well. Is it possible to stand it upside down to use? Then you won't need to remove the lip.
  6. The village "stocks" and "cage," with the motto, "It is a sport for a fool to do mischief;thine own wickedness shall correct thee," formerlys tood at the corner of the pathway across the fields leading to Camberwell, opposite the burial-ground;and the college "pound," which formerly stood near the toll-gate in the Penge Road, was, in 1862,ordered to be removed to the end of Croxted Lane. One of the most interesting spots within the hamletis that formerly known as Bew's Corner, LordshipLane. The "Green Man," a tavern of some note in the middle of the last century, formerly occupied the site, after which time Dr. Glennie's school was built; and that in its turn having disappeared, a beer-house was opened there, by a man namedBew, formerly employed at the college, who madeuse of some out-buildings of the once famous school, and converted the grounds into a tea garden. The famous Dulwich Wells were in close proximity to the "Green Man," and the Dulwich waters were cried about the streets of London as far backas 1678; and for many years, through the high repute of the waters, much custom was drawn to the adjoining tavern, which, in 1748, was described as a "noted house of good entertainment." The proprietor flourished so well, that a publication of the time tells us that "he has lately built a handsome room on one end of his bowling-green for breakfasts, dancing, and entertainment; a part of the fashionable luxury of the present age, which every village for ten miles round London hassomething of." A full account of the Dulwich mineral waters was communicated to the public through the "Philosophical Transactions," by Professor Martyn, F.R.S. Mr. Bray, in his accountof this parish in his "History of Surrey," writes:?"In the autumn of 1739, Mr. Cox, master of the"Green Man," about a mile south of the village of Dulwich, having occasion to sink a well for his family, dug down about sixty feet without finding water. Discouraged at this, he covered it up, and so left it. In the following spring, however, he opened it again; when, the Botanical Professor in the University of Cambridge being present, it wasfound to contain about twenty-five feet of water, ofa sulphureous taste and smell." It was found by experiment to be possessed of purgative qualities, and was for some time used medicinally, but was afterwards neglected. From: 'Peckham and Dulwich', Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878), pp. 286-303. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=45282 Date accessed: 24 January 2013. At the junction of Dulwich Common and Lordship Lane still exists the pathway called Cox's Walk. after Mr. Cox, master of the"Green Man,"
  7. Each of those new hundreds of Advertising Threads has never been replied to, just the occasional member trying to read them read. A waste of a good website.
  8. As you are over six feet tall anything you lay will give you a head ache You could use a composite material. http://concreteflooringsolu.rtrk.co.uk/?scid=53767&kw=7062477&pub_cr_id=6518627727 http://www.pouredfloor.co.uk/
  9. We knew that, how come you are so out of touch with your M. P. s Councillors, MPs and MEPs Southwark has 63 councillors, representing 21 wards. Ten of those councillors form the cabinet. There are three MPs that represent the borough's parliamentary constituencies. I think that you are also unaware that you could have edited your post, it would have saved you some embarrassment placing a correction.
  10. Might it not have been to your advantage to give a small detail of your part in the Department? Thus: What is Community Cohesion? Community Cohesion is what must happen in all communities to help different groups of people get on well together through the integration of new and existing residents. Our vision of an integrated and cohesive community is based on three foundations: People from different backgrounds having similar life opportunities People knowing their rights and responsibilities People trusting one another and trusting local institutions to act fairly And three key ways of living together: A shared future vision and sense of belonging A focus on what new and existing communities have in common, alongside a recognition of the value of diversity Strong and positive relationships between people from different backgrounds. ___________________ It would be interesting to this Forum Members the response you get from those Members who have been influenced to fill the Form. Could it be that the Mayor has now too much power? Where does the advancement of the Mayor fall in this Department? To date there has been no appreiceation from you, not even a " Thank you " for using this Forum.
  11. If they do you can expect the high costs of parking at any Hospital.
  12. Sterling lost his Licence so after used his mini motor cycle, he lived in Sheperds Market off of Park Lane. A Mews that had been used over the years to house horses then for cars today they are converted to a high standard accommodation Sterling did his own even making holes in the skirting for a Hoover suction hose to be plugged into in all the rooms, to a central dust bag in the garage, he did not do too well when he fell down the lift shaft he was making. Sterling at the Trophy awards, his first race since his accident at Goodwood where he was injured and was unconscious for a month. When he was Knighted by Prince Charles on leaving Buckingham Palace the Policeman on the gate objected to the speed he arrived at the gate, saying " Who do you think you are Sterling Moss?" He replied " Sir Sterling Moss actually!"
  13. I miss the Motor racing, Stering Moss in those early open racing cars, popular sport but the drivers often became casualties. I followed his career and still have a large collection of his photo's that were taken by the Press prior to putting in the Newspapers If you are interested there is a programme on BBC2 at eight tonight Thursday.
  14. The girl Operators at the Telephone Exchanges were overseen by a Supevisor who constantly walked behind them and pointed at a flashing light that indecated there was a caller waiting to be connected it was very strict. My wife worked at New Cross Exchange in St Mary's Road, for seventeen & half years being loaned to other Exchanges such as the Social Services block in the old Holdrons Building in Bournemouth Road, or the one at the Elephant, or the Exchange in Black Prince Road Vauxhall. Later she transferred to the Faraday Building in Queen Victoria Street working on International Calls, connecting diect lines with Buckingham Palace, and often spoke to foreign heads of state to connect them. She has lost that POSH voice now. http://www.lightstraw.co.uk/ate/main/faraday/faraday1.html
  15. Public Toilets. You could spend a penny for nothing, now it might cost as much as ten new pennies to point percy at the porcelain. That if you can find one in time. Why has Human Rights not been consulted.
  16. Popeye and Olive Oil, Sweet Pea comes later. In the comics, Swee'Pea is a baby found on Popeye's doorstep (actually delivered to him in a box) in a 1933 strip. Popeye adopts and raises him as his son, or, as he puts it "boy-kid". Initially, Swee'Pea's speech consisted entirely of the sound "glop". As the years went on, Swee'Pea apparently aged enough to speak normally, and could throw punches if necessary; however, his appearance remained that of a crawling baby.
  17. I miss Popeye the Sailorman, with those big armes with anchor tattoo's. It was the spinage that gave him the strength. He needed that to handle his girl friend Olive Oil, thin as a rake don't we dont see girls like that these days.
  18. It is available on record. Attendance statistics for Councillor Althea Smith Statistic Count Percentage Total expected attendances: 15 Present as expected: 12 80% Apologies received: 2 67% of absences Absent (incl. apologies): 3 20%
  19. This might be better.
  20. Southwark's Mayor Councillor Althea Smith was elected Mayor of Southwark at the Annual Meeting of Council Assembly on 23 May 2012 held at the council's offices in Tooley Street for the first time. Co-opted councillor until her election as ward councillor for Labour for Nunhead. Present at Meetings only twelve of a posible fifteen. Could do better?
  21. Its Santa having a look where there are no longer Chimney Stacks to climb down. Looks like you will have to stand outside and catch your present from the Helicopter as Santa has updated from his old sleigh. It was prohibited as a health Hazard due to the droppings from overhead Reindeer.
  22. Would this mean that the Mayor will have more Power? Such as Power held by Boris. Perhaps to make an Airport on the banks of the Thames at Southwark on stilts so not to impare the flow of the Thames, and the Flight Path over Southwark, Bermondsey Camberwell Dulwich to the Dawson Heights. I see that the Mayor and his Committee would over see all suggestions Will this be in the interest of the population Of Southwark?
  23. A round Robin. att.
