It's pure victim blaming and calling them "idiots" is disgraceful. I'll give one specific (and local) example: KCH physio Esther Hartsilver was killed on her way to work in Camberwell a couple of years ago by a left turning delivery lorry. The subsequent inquest didn't blame her but the poor road layout.
  2. You really need to retract this: DulwichLondoner Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Also, what are the causes of these accidents? There are many, many reasons why accidents like this happen. Perhaps you should actually bother to find out why first...
  3. Cold is not good. Are the same women in charge? They were wonderfully chilled out
  4. I'm trying to find some string-like elastic to make bead necklaces / bracelets. Have plenty of beads and can find plenty of thick elastic for clothes. Does anyone know where I can definitely buy some of the thin stuff in East Dulwich / Peckham? Thanks.
  5. This morning my daughter's nursery warned parents about the "attempted abduction". They have just sent us a message saying that police have informed Dulwich Hamlet school that there was NO attempt to abduct a child. This is 3rd/4th hand - can anyone confirm? Maybe then we can stand down the lynch mob for the nanny.
  6. Echo the sentiments on here. Small point but can we call it what it is? It's a robbery not a mugging. It's a serious crime and should they get caught they'll hopefully face a long prison sentence.
  7. La Scala? Good enough for me and is fairly close to station
  8. we were happy with alu doors from here: http://www.yourpricebifolds.co.uk/
  9. Weren't no plod there around 8 this morning - guess it's not really a biggie is it - especially as there's no evidence of anyone actually having been hurt there by an evil cyclist. I would suggest more of a safety issue on that section of road is drivers turning left from Bellenden Rd onto Choumert Rd and not indicating. Doubt plod will do owt about that either.
  10. @Charles Notice I only found out about this consultation from on here. I have subsequently seen a notice attached to a lampost on Bellenden Road near Lidl but that's about it.
  11. Having used the area as a motorist, cyclist and pedestrian over quite a number of years, the changes make sense to me. The area around chadwick road and bellenden is not pedestrian-friendly at all especially near the Ganapatti restaurant. The traffic comes round the corners quickly and you have to be quick to cross - very very few motorists give way. Try moving quickly with two kids and a pram - and what about those who can't physically sprint across? Yes, you can walk another 50m or so and use the zebra crossings further up - but why should it always be pedestrians who are inconvenienced to the benefit of cars? Also by the restaurant, the road divides three ways, which makes it confusing for pedestrians especially as London drivers don't like to use their indicators. For cycling it's not much better either: Drivers tend to speed along one-way streets even more than they do on two-way streets. I agree it will be more inconvenient for driving, but I stopped enjoying driving in London many years ago. It's not going to improve.
  12. @Lilaclou If you must use this junction could you not start off a second or two before they turn green - assuming you know the phasing of the lights? You could be in for a long wait until the junction is improved and even longer for drivers to start driving properly.
  13. I used to use that cut through both ways every saturday on our way out west. Apart from the first few weekends the traffic now seems to have stabilised - or perhaps moved elsewhere. Rarely get caught up in much of a jam but then it is only saturdays I use it. Certainly not chaos.
  14. Sue: We have one of the giant brown bins outside the house (as does everyone else in our street) it's more to do with how to keep the brown bin outside less smelly and dirty rather than the inside brown bin
  15. @Sue I was quite clear it was the brown bins for kitchen and garden waste. I asked if the newspaper can go in too. They said: "You may line you bin with newspaper but not wrap. They will only take the loose food contents." I've found some much cheaper bags online but I'm rather hoping the council will sell discounted ones themselves.
  16. @KestonKid Where is "Farmers" and how much are they charging per bag? I've been speaking to Southwark recycling and they confirmed that you can't put newspaper in the brown bin. So what are the options for those of us who don't want to pay for bags - is there a cunning cost-saving solution? Over winter putting it straight into the bin may not be that bad but once it gets warmer I'm really not going to want to open the lid. I know some other boroughs still give them away for free - but I assume you have to show some proof of address to get them. Unless anyone knows different.

What speed were they doing 10mph - maybe 15mph tops?
  18. There are mexican standoffs there every day - it's quite amusing how angry some drivers get Freeing up one side will just encourage more cars to use it as a cut through Saw the coach the other day too - it was parked in a ridiculous place and because the door was on the "wrong side" for UK roads the passengers were spat out into the middle of the road...
  19. @OP It's probably more useful to think of it as who has priority rather than right of way. In the scenario u gave u have priority if the pedestrians have not started crossing. However pedestrians often walk out in front of cyclists even if you've signalled and made eye contact. The law is designed to protect vulnerable road users and even if pedestrians do the most stupid things you must do everything you can to avoid an accident
  20. It's not discretionary for motorists to stop at zebra crossings - pedestrians have priority. I know what you mean though and often I will give an acknowledgement to those who do stop. However in the above case the driver certainly didn't deserve any kind of thanks - I may well have told him what I thought about his mother if he'd done that to me
  21. +1 for Balfes we went in on the off-chance to look at folding bikes and the staff were v helpful friendly and let us try some out. I have also used Evans' price match system many times in the past - what's particularly good is that you can return online ordered stuff to any Evans store - others like CycleSurgery ask you to return by post.
  22. Another firm recommendation for Steve. Fixed our washer dryer promptly and for a very reasonable fee. We've used him to repair our dishwasher in the past.
  23. Over the past few weeks i've had to manoeuvre my young children and pram around a number of unregulated building hazards (cables, wires, ladders and even a pipe funnelling liquid concrete) on the footways around Peckham and Camberwell, but today's simply shocked me for its brazeness and disregard. A builder in Grove Hill Road had put a plank above the pavement so he could carry wheelbarrows full of earth into a skip in the road (see photo) There were no warning signs, no one watching and no thought given to the people that actually use the pavement. When I saw him carrying his next load into the skip he said with a smile; "Sorry mate - I can't get it to the skip any other way." I pointed out that he could, and he was blocking the footway so I would have to walk into the road, and around his skip. I have reported it to Southwark Building Control. Does anyone know if I should report it elsewhere?
