Echo the sentiments on here. Small point but can we call it what it is? It's a robbery not a mugging. It's a serious crime and should they get caught they'll hopefully face a long prison sentence.

La Scala? Good enough for me and is fairly close to station

Weren't no plod there around 8 this morning - guess it's not really a biggie is it - especially as there's no evidence of anyone actually having been hurt there by an evil cyclist. I would suggest more of a safety issue on that section of road is drivers turning left from Bellenden Rd onto Choumert Rd and not indicating. Doubt plod will do owt about that either.

Having used the area as a motorist, cyclist and pedestrian over quite a number of years, the changes make sense to me. The area around chadwick road and bellenden is not pedestrian-friendly at all especially near the Ganapatti restaurant. The traffic comes round the corners quickly and you have to be quick to cross - very very few motorists give way. Try moving quickly with two kids and a pram - and what about those who can't physically sprint across? Yes, you can walk another 50m or so and use the zebra crossings further up - but why should it always be pedestrians who are inconvenienced to the benefit of cars? Also by the restaurant, the road divides three ways, which makes it confusing for pedestrians especially as London drivers don't like to use their indicators. For cycling it's not much better either: Drivers tend to speed along one-way streets even more than they do on two-way streets. I agree it will be more inconvenient for driving, but I stopped enjoying driving in London many years ago. It's not going to improve.

Dangerous junction for bikes: Peckham rye and Nunhead lane
Beulah replied to lilaclou's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@Lilaclou If you must use this junction could you not start off a second or two before they turn green - assuming you know the phasing of the lights? You could be in for a long wait until the junction is improved and even longer for drivers to start driving properly. -
No through route at Loughborough Junction
Beulah replied to mikeb's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to use that cut through both ways every saturday on our way out west. Apart from the first few weekends the traffic now seems to have stabilised - or perhaps moved elsewhere. Rarely get caught up in much of a jam but then it is only saturdays I use it. Certainly not chaos. -
Green food waste bags no longer free from Southwark Council
Beulah replied to Mrs TP's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sue: We have one of the giant brown bins outside the house (as does everyone else in our street) it's more to do with how to keep the brown bin outside less smelly and dirty rather than the inside brown bin -
Green food waste bags no longer free from Southwark Council
Beulah replied to Mrs TP's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@Sue I was quite clear it was the brown bins for kitchen and garden waste. I asked if the newspaper can go in too. They said: "You may line you bin with newspaper but not wrap. They will only take the loose food contents." I've found some much cheaper bags online but I'm rather hoping the council will sell discounted ones themselves. -
Green food waste bags no longer free from Southwark Council
Beulah replied to Mrs TP's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@KestonKid Where is "Farmers" and how much are they charging per bag? I've been speaking to Southwark recycling and they confirmed that you can't put newspaper in the brown bin. So what are the options for those of us who don't want to pay for bags - is there a cunning cost-saving solution? Over winter putting it straight into the bin may not be that bad but once it gets warmer I'm really not going to want to open the lid. I know some other boroughs still give them away for free - but I assume you have to show some proof of address to get them. Unless anyone knows different. -

What speed were they doing 10mph - maybe 15mph tops?

There are mexican standoffs there every day - it's quite amusing how angry some drivers get Freeing up one side will just encourage more cars to use it as a cut through Saw the coach the other day too - it was parked in a ridiculous place and because the door was on the "wrong side" for UK roads the passengers were spat out into the middle of the road...

@OP It's probably more useful to think of it as who has priority rather than right of way. In the scenario u gave u have priority if the pedestrians have not started crossing. However pedestrians often walk out in front of cyclists even if you've signalled and made eye contact. The law is designed to protect vulnerable road users and even if pedestrians do the most stupid things you must do everything you can to avoid an accident

Mad van driver by ED station.
Beulah replied to Concerned motorist's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's not discretionary for motorists to stop at zebra crossings - pedestrians have priority. I know what you mean though and often I will give an acknowledgement to those who do stop. However in the above case the driver certainly didn't deserve any kind of thanks - I may well have told him what I thought about his mother if he'd done that to me -
+1 for Balfes we went in on the off-chance to look at folding bikes and the staff were v helpful friendly and let us try some out. I have also used Evans' price match system many times in the past - what's particularly good is that you can return online ordered stuff to any Evans store - others like CycleSurgery ask you to return by post.

Another firm recommendation for Steve. Fixed our washer dryer promptly and for a very reasonable fee. We've used him to repair our dishwasher in the past.

Over the past few weeks i've had to manoeuvre my young children and pram around a number of unregulated building hazards (cables, wires, ladders and even a pipe funnelling liquid concrete) on the footways around Peckham and Camberwell, but today's simply shocked me for its brazeness and disregard. A builder in Grove Hill Road had put a plank above the pavement so he could carry wheelbarrows full of earth into a skip in the road (see photo) There were no warning signs, no one watching and no thought given to the people that actually use the pavement. When I saw him carrying his next load into the skip he said with a smile; "Sorry mate - I can't get it to the skip any other way." I pointed out that he could, and he was blocking the footway so I would have to walk into the road, and around his skip. I have reported it to Southwark Building Control. Does anyone know if I should report it elsewhere?

Article about closure of Hooper's Bar and its future
Beulah replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks Sue I also found that article very interesting. I have lived near to Hoopers for a while and often thought about going there as it looked like a nice boozer, but never once made it. Sad to think it's because of people like me that it's been forced to close. I also feel sorry for the chinese restaurant opposite (Ho Lok) that presumably has taken a real hit in trade since Hoopers shut. Once pubs shut in places such as this there's no way they'll ever return. -
Well last night I noticed the Zebra crossing has reopened. The signs have disappeared. Let's hope they finish the work on time and we can return to the normal chaos.
-
Thanks Siduhe - i've registered a complaint.

There's yet more roadworks along Bellenden Road. This time it's the gas people. To add to the considerable inconvenience and chaos, this time they have "closed" the zebra crossing near the junction with Choumert Rd by placing two signs saying "crossing out of use". I think they have done this illegally but am not sure. From what I understand only the highway authority can authorise the closing of a crossing / taking it out of service. Legal or not, it has been done with zero consideration for the large number of pedestrians who rely on using that to cross what is a very busy and dangerous road. No alternative measures have been put in place. As usual the only consideration is given to motorists - and even then not much. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where I can find out more? Thanks.
-
^^Or alternatively don't drive. Most people don't have the proper tyres for this weather and few seem to have a clue how to drive in these conditions anyway. By not using your car you will make it safer for you and other road users. Snow will be mostly gone by tomorrow.

Police at Warwick Gardens (October 11)
Beulah replied to OliviaB's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It was a rape. And let's not blame the victim eh? She had every right to expect to walk home at whatever time of night without being attacked by total scum like this. If it's a "dodgy area" then we should make it safe - I don't want any no-go areas in my manor do you? ************* This is from the police appeal: The 24 year old female victim was walking home from work in Warwick Gardens, Peckham at approximately 22.35 after getting of a train at Peckham Rye station. A man approached her from behind and placed his arm around her shoulder asking the victim if he could talk to her. The victim then screamed and was immediately grabbed by the throat and led into shrubbery close to the railway line and raped. The attacker then left the park in the direction of Lyndhurst Way, SE15. Her attacker is described as a black man, in his late twenties or early thirties, between five feet ten and six feet tall with a strong African accent. He was wearing a light or grey tracksuit. Anyone with information are asked to call detectives on 020 8721 4640; or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. No arrests, enquiries continue. **************** Let's help the police find this POS. If he's done it once he's gonna do it again. -
Isn't it a criminal offence? "Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to throw down, drop or otherwise deposit and then leave, litter in any place in the open air. Section 27 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 amends the offence to include within the definition of litter the discarded ends of cigarettes, cigars and the discarded remains of other products designed for chewing."
