  1. Another recommendation for Paul. He fixed a laptop with a smashed rear cover and hinge. Prompt, good communication, was very clear about charges, very reasonable prices and very good workmanship.
  2. There are mexican standoffs there every day - it's quite amusing how angry some drivers get Freeing up one side will just encourage more cars to use it as a cut through Saw the coach the other day too - it was parked in a ridiculous place and because the door was on the "wrong side" for UK roads the passengers were spat out into the middle of the road...
  3. @OP It's probably more useful to think of it as who has priority rather than right of way. In the scenario u gave u have priority if the pedestrians have not started crossing. However pedestrians often walk out in front of cyclists even if you've signalled and made eye contact. The law is designed to protect vulnerable road users and even if pedestrians do the most stupid things you must do everything you can to avoid an accident
  4. It's not discretionary for motorists to stop at zebra crossings - pedestrians have priority. I know what you mean though and often I will give an acknowledgement to those who do stop. However in the above case the driver certainly didn't deserve any kind of thanks - I may well have told him what I thought about his mother if he'd done that to me
  5. +1 for Balfes we went in on the off-chance to look at folding bikes and the staff were v helpful friendly and let us try some out. I have also used Evans' price match system many times in the past - what's particularly good is that you can return online ordered stuff to any Evans store - others like CycleSurgery ask you to return by post.
  6. Another firm recommendation for Steve. Fixed our washer dryer promptly and for a very reasonable fee. We've used him to repair our dishwasher in the past.
  7. Over the past few weeks i've had to manoeuvre my young children and pram around a number of unregulated building hazards (cables, wires, ladders and even a pipe funnelling liquid concrete) on the footways around Peckham and Camberwell, but today's simply shocked me for its brazeness and disregard. A builder in Grove Hill Road had put a plank above the pavement so he could carry wheelbarrows full of earth into a skip in the road (see photo) There were no warning signs, no one watching and no thought given to the people that actually use the pavement. When I saw him carrying his next load into the skip he said with a smile; "Sorry mate - I can't get it to the skip any other way." I pointed out that he could, and he was blocking the footway so I would have to walk into the road, and around his skip. I have reported it to Southwark Building Control. Does anyone know if I should report it elsewhere?
  8. Another recommendation for Alan. Was with me within the hour and replaced a faulty lock at the same time. (Make sure you mention the forum when you use him!)
  9. Thanks Sue I also found that article very interesting. I have lived near to Hoopers for a while and often thought about going there as it looked like a nice boozer, but never once made it. Sad to think it's because of people like me that it's been forced to close. I also feel sorry for the chinese restaurant opposite (Ho Lok) that presumably has taken a real hit in trade since Hoopers shut. Once pubs shut in places such as this there's no way they'll ever return.
  10. Recommendation for Ryan at RJS Carpentry. He's just completed a new front door for us. We are very happy with the result. It was done for a reasonable price and Ryan is very easy and nice to deal with. If you'd like more info please send personal message
  11. New door completed yesterday. We went with Ryan at RJS Carpentry and are very happy with the result. It's exactly the kind of door we had in mind and it was done for a reasonable price. We're happy to recommend Ryan - if you'd like more specific information pls send us a personal message. (For those interested the colour is Dulux weathershield in Farrow and Ball's Elephant's Breath mixed at Shaun's DIY by East Dulwich station)
  12. Would like to post a recommendation for Patryk. I found him through this forum and he did a great job on my fence that was destroyed by the storm a few weeks ago. He was a third cheaper than another quote we received (although that was partly because he reused and remade broken fence panels which was what we wanted). He was very quick, very easy to deal with and the rubbish was all cleared when he said it would be. Please pm if you want more info.
  13. Am after a recommendation for a new front door. Ideally somewhere between the bespoke doors offered by companies such as the London Door Company (v nice but at 2k+ was out of our price range) and the Yale catalogue type (who because of data protection can't tell us the address of any door they've installed for us to look at!) Ideally we'd like to see a photograph of your door (or address of where we could view it), details of where you got it and if possible who fitted it. Any help gratefully received. Matt
  14. Well last night I noticed the Zebra crossing has reopened. The signs have disappeared. Let's hope they finish the work on time and we can return to the normal chaos.
  15. There's yet more roadworks along Bellenden Road. This time it's the gas people. To add to the considerable inconvenience and chaos, this time they have "closed" the zebra crossing near the junction with Choumert Rd by placing two signs saying "crossing out of use". I think they have done this illegally but am not sure. From what I understand only the highway authority can authorise the closing of a crossing / taking it out of service. Legal or not, it has been done with zero consideration for the large number of pedestrians who rely on using that to cross what is a very busy and dangerous road. No alternative measures have been put in place. As usual the only consideration is given to motorists - and even then not much. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where I can find out more? Thanks.
  16. ^^Or alternatively don't drive. Most people don't have the proper tyres for this weather and few seem to have a clue how to drive in these conditions anyway. By not using your car you will make it safer for you and other road users. Snow will be mostly gone by tomorrow.
  17. It was a rape. And let's not blame the victim eh? She had every right to expect to walk home at whatever time of night without being attacked by total scum like this. If it's a "dodgy area" then we should make it safe - I don't want any no-go areas in my manor do you? ************* This is from the police appeal: The 24 year old female victim was walking home from work in Warwick Gardens, Peckham at approximately 22.35 after getting of a train at Peckham Rye station. A man approached her from behind and placed his arm around her shoulder asking the victim if he could talk to her. The victim then screamed and was immediately grabbed by the throat and led into shrubbery close to the railway line and raped. The attacker then left the park in the direction of Lyndhurst Way, SE15. Her attacker is described as a black man, in his late twenties or early thirties, between five feet ten and six feet tall with a strong African accent. He was wearing a light or grey tracksuit. Anyone with information are asked to call detectives on 020 8721 4640; or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. No arrests, enquiries continue. **************** Let's help the police find this POS. If he's done it once he's gonna do it again.
  18. Isn't it a criminal offence? "Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to throw down, drop or otherwise deposit and then leave, litter in any place in the open air. Section 27 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 amends the offence to include within the definition of litter the discarded ends of cigarettes, cigars and the discarded remains of other products designed for chewing."
  19. Depends what you call hassle free... We used this site for our little one (5months old) earlier this year. epassport It's free (see below) all you pay for is a print at Boots - about 30p. We used the post office checking service - they check the photo is ok before sending the application. To get a free print load up a photograph and check it's within the green section. When u get to stage 3 "print the sheet" select "no thanks" and you get a sheet for free on your computer. Put that onto a memory stick and take it to Boots or somewhere similar.
  20. Dan Garfield, joins twitter and calls all cyclists "murderous" before desperately backtracking and saying he only meant it was one particular cyclist http://twitter.com/#!/DanGarfield just as well he's not in charge of any committees involving transport or anything then isn't it? Oh...hang on...
  21. So bullying an innocent passer-by in the street and then threatening them with bottles when they react is being a "bit cheeky" is it? FFS some of you lot are nuts. What if they'd thrown the bottle at him or tried to mug him - would you excuse that too? For sure some teens do act "a bit cheeky" from time to time. That's why they need someone like that jogger to show em what's what.
  22. Why don't you go back to the scene the same time next week and ask around? Perhaps some of the local shopworkers saw it? Hope you heal up soon. I was knocked off a couple of years ago whilst I was in a cycle lane by a left turning van that didn't indicate. Sounds like some of the people on here would have blamed me for that. I too forgot to get witnesses' names in the heat of the moment but the driver did eventually pay for the damage. The threat of claiming off their insurance normally does the trick.
  23. If the cones are met police cones, then a phone call to the local nick telling them your neighbour has some of their property should quickly sort out the problem. From a brief "google" it seems the placing the cones on the road constitutes "obstructing the highway" and is technically an offence. But proving it and enforcing it won't be so straightforward.
