Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
Marmora Man replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A better solution has been proposed by Mrs W. Stop the No. 63 bus at Peckham. Give locals that use the 63 a pass to use the 363 for free between Peckham and Forest Hill Tavern. A slight inconvenience to passengers but otherwise a rather clever compromise I think. -
I finally made it to see Warhorse last weekend - with two, somewhat cynical 20 something sons. Everyone was wowed by it and I'm sure a sensitive teenage girl would find it WOW too - I'm sure know it anyway Giggirl but a second trip? The groupon vouchers often offer cookery courses for Atelier Des Chefs (www.atelierdeschefs.co.uk) which are great fun and good value for money with a voucher.

Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
Marmora Man replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As a vendor myself I passed the details of the bus diversion to the purchaser's solicitors. there seemed to be no issue for them. A similar diversion has occurred once since we've lived here - it wasn't a problem. As the timing of the current plan has slipped slightly I don't think it will have much impact on children. They do play in the street during summer months - but mostly this is restricted to to the end of Marmora which wouldn't be affected by the buses and, in any case, they'll be back at school soon. As for damage to houses - they've stood for over 100 years, survived the Blitz and many many internal refurbishments, changes and restructurings - so I imagine they'll survive a few months of bus journey's passing close by. -

But that has to be weighed against > the real sense of achievement you'll get from not > stuffing an annual post-tax grand into a rail > franchise. I second the bike option - I did an equivalent journey (to Tavistock Sq) for three years from Marmora Road and after the first week where I got used to E&C roundabout it was a doddle. A bit of research and you can find interesting routes that avoid riding behind TFL buses - every day is a changing landscape and it's usually quite companionable with "hail fellow, well met" moments between cyclists, pedestrians and taxi drivers. Add in improved fitness and cash saving - it becomes very difficult to argue against.

My son is moving back to London - will be living near the Oval and is looking for a hockey club he can join. Can anyone advise of clubs he might contact. He's a good club level player but aiming to play for pleasure - as will be a shift worker (paramedic) and not always able to commit to every Saturday.

Glad yuo've made your mind up. How? I'm still trying to find objective evidence on which to base a decision. The former Government Chief Scientist David King has dismissed most of the concerns cited as irrational. Others tell me I'll be able to light the gas coming from my cold water tap. What is truth?

Where has the Electrical shop cafe gone???
Marmora Man replied to Frankie G's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've always thought it would make a great "destination" restaurant - along the lines of Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. However, the restriction on opening hours stymies that. If Council Planning officers / committee were more flexible and approve longer hours for the right sort of place it could have a positive impact on ED, altho' we have some interesting eateries (off to Palmerston tonight) we don't really have a top of the range restaurant. -
zeban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > In Japan the company you work for has to pay for > your commute, it's illegal for them not to. > Something that would NEVER happen in the UK but > bloody brilliant and hugely beneficial. Another > price hike is completely unacceptable Someone, somewhere must be bearing the cost of the employer paying for the commute. Probably either the employee in reduced actual salary or the purchaser of the employer's services / products in increased price(s). It may appear to be a free good - but it can't be.

KK - it was a Thule box with nylon "self locking" straps that you can buy in luggage depths at airports and the like.
-
For Info My new home village - but their Forum lacks bite http://www.sttudy.org.uk
-
KK - attachments are from inside the box - so as long as it's locked shut the easy access doesn't imply easy theft. In my experience the cheaper Halford's version, which is of thinner plastic, tends to flap in high winds or above speeds of 60mph. This can cause rain seepage, altho' in practice I never experienced it. It did cause a hell of a lot of noise which was annoying and once, memorably, it forced the lid off by distorting the shape and effectively releasing the locks. Thus leaving quite a bit of Marmora family irtems strewn along the A303. My actions thereafter were to buy a top of the range box and lash it down, fore and afte, with nylon straps which reduced noise and likelihood of opening.

Alan, Oz is not for us. Cornwall is where we started our married life, Devon & Cornwall are where many of our friends still live and I long to hear the sound of the sea and fewer sirens.
-
I believe there is a scheme in London at least where a shop / restaurant etc declares they will allow general public to use their loos and, in return, they obtain some (small) relief on business rates.

Within a month Mr & Mrs MM are off - to North Cornwall and downsizing. Closer to friends and relative we will always remember East Dulwich with great pleasure. How will I miss ED? Let me count the ways. The EDF is still the ?go to? for advice ? if no longer for robust political discussion. As one of those that distributed Mark?s original cards to promote it I?ll continue to ?lurk? but will try not to comment from the depths of Cornwall. Strafer Jack (aka Sean McGabhan), Otta (aka Keef), El Pibe, PeckhamRose, Mockney Piers, Santerme, ????, Mic Mac, David Carnell and many many others for the cut and thrust of early debates. William Rose ? no better place for smoked streaky, sirloin steaks or friendly advice. Fresh Flower Company ? supplier of my weekend rose, occasional treats and gifts for friends. The Bishop ? far better than the Forester?s it replaced but, sadly, no longer quite what it was. I continue to wish it well ? if only for the memory of great macaroni cheese, buttermilk chicken or deep fried cheese sticks lunches (with glass of house red) when I was ?working from home?. The Actress ? for its intriguing pizzas. Pretty Traditional ? all my fresh veg, from the first Christmas here till now. SMBS for all the other stuff. The Palmerston ? for our ?pub suppers? of superb high quality. Dulwich DIY ? without which I could never have maintained and improved Marmora Mansions. Si Mangia ? so convenient for ?let?s not cook ? let?s go for a local bite?. Great value for money meals. Puremackintosh.com ? Chris Essex-Hill for maintaining and feeding my Mac addiction, and keeping all the applications and devices working for me. Turner's for keeping our various bangers running St Christopher?s Hospice ? for helping us de clutter before selling and then taking so much of our downsized stuff. Mr Lui ? the only local Chinese worth eating in. Winkworths for selling Marmora Mansions Ganapati ? the only Indian restaurant I?d travel back to London for. Cosmos Electrics ? for all our electrical works Green & Blue ? sadly missed. ToastED ? a very welcome replacement. Merrifields ? for maintaining my shoe leather for so long Moxons ? friendly, helpful and a great selection. Good banter. East Dulwich Deli ? still the best sausage rolls, brownies to die for and great service ? plus the occasional 2 for 1 bread deals. Rod Francis (Flow London) ? for all our plumbing The Cheese Block ? the best selection this side of Neals Yard Dairy. Suzanne James ? for so many, superb and delightful Supper Club dinners and all the guests that we met there. For Peckham Rye, Dulwich Park, The No. 63 bus, views over the London skyline, the Overground which has transformed my commuting, easy access to London ?proper? with its theatres, cinemas, restaurants, walks, bridges, the River Thames, Boris Bikes, New Year?s Eve fireworks, The Oval and cricket, Borough Market, the Rope Walk ? Bermondsey, The National Theatre, Angels & Gypsies and to countless others ? neighbours, bus drivers, shoppers, Northcross Road stall holders and everyone else that have returned my ?good mornings?, ?good evenings? and chatter with a friendly smile.

if it's cheaper elsewhere - buy elsewhere, don't whinge. The retailer will notice drop off in trade and change behaviour

This weekend I sold some theatre tickets and gave away some furniture. Unusually, I received two very nice "thank you" notes from those that took up my offer. It made a lot of difference and will, I hope, be an example for others to follow.

We should just be grateful that we have 4 butchers to choose from - W Rose, Flock & Herd, the bloke by the Plough and the bloke on Northcross Road. All excellent - when I moved here we had just one to use on Liberrtto's on WoodVale - which remains and is also still good value and good quality - if a tad eccentric. Also when I moved here (reflecting now I'm leaving) there was no fishmonger, The Bishop & Actress were awful pubs, the Plough little better. There was no Green & Blue, no pizza or pasta options (thanks Sim Mangia, Il Mirto and latest incarnation vice Indian Mischief). BoHo, Adventure, The Tippler had yet to arrive. I find, in practice, that LL and its surroundings are, in effect a large rather geographically diverse supermarket offering higher quality, better value for money and the chance to establish a relationship with the shopkeepers. I will miss this once in Cornwall - but hope my local town & village will offer other compensations.
-
Mick Mac - you seemed a happy man at the Supper Club? Good food and wine can do that to a person. I do't know about Saffron's suggestion but I've always found Myers Briggs a good indicator of style in people. Me - I'm broadly optimistic about life and people (and an easy mark for a con artist!)

Thanks for both thoughts - unfortunately the New London specifically refused to change the tickets when I enquirer. It's in their T&Cs apparently.

Gone to a good home. A 9 year old boy and his mother will see the show.

The air ambulance often has a trauma doctor onboard as well as highly trained / qualified paramedics. It may therefore be best to bring the doc to the patient to stabilise him before moving to A&E by road. -

I know you said you wanted to stay local - but I have two tickets for Warhorse at the New London Theatre I can't use ( my wife s unwell). Face value for the two tickets ?117.00 but happy to take a donation toward cost so as not to see them go to waste. No 63 bus to E&C followed by 68 / 168 would get you close to the theatre for less than a fiver!
-
Owing to my wife's illness we are unable to use our two stalls tickets for Warhorse at the New London Theatre. Tickets I 21 & 22. Face value ?58.50 each. I'd hate to see them go to waste so if anyone would like to make me an offer, best bid received before 5.30pm secures.
