I'll give you that there was a entrepreneurs/merchant class, but very, very few of these emerged from the working class. And, for those that did make it that were not from the upper classes were excluded from 'society' anyway. Money did not buy you a ticket into the right circles. These days it does. Because today, that's all that matters. As for rich entertainers from poor backgrounds, were there really that many? If any? I can't think of any before the advent of Hollywood in the 1920's.

I disagree Mick Mac. To me a class system is the very definition of a lack of socio-economic mobility. Whatever family you were born into pretty much (with some exceptions) defined your lot in life. These days, that is a lot less true. > > Over time, even when we had landed gentry, middle > class, working class, families would have moved > between these classes over time, or generations, > as a gradual process, just not overnight. > > People can move more quickly between modern day > socio economic groupings, based upon education and > income. I guess that's progress. This I agree with. These days, it's whoever has money. And which family you were born into counts much, much less. Look at the top earners in this country - how many are footballers, entertainers and F1 drivers? How many are self-made businessmen. And then look at how many are the old 'landed gentry' families? The class system (as it was) is dead.

I agree. I reckon I could learn how to press one of three buttons on a train designed to run without a driver much quicker than that.
  4. Why do you think that, Parkdrive? Do you really think there is no social mobility in the UK?
  5. We don't do russian food. We do fast food.
  6. This is starting to qualify as spam. Can we report it?
  7. It is useful for winding up types of parent who think the world should revolve around their little bast... darlings.
  8. I don't think you quite understand the meaning of the word 'great' in that context. Because GREAT Britain would be crap compared to the GREATER London area. And all of those would be rubbish compared with Best, Texas.
  9. To be fair, you can't blame her, really.

People complaining about one medical centre being preyed on my the pitiful 38 Degrees sheep to try and fool people into supporting their rather dubious campaign. Disgraceful behaviour.
  11. Scrap child benefit altogether. There are too many people in this world - why are we giving people a benefit to have more? Madness. Everything else that increases the risk of climate change is being taxed. Scrapping CB makes the most sense.
  12. Shouldn't these be in the "ED businesses, restaurants & trades." section? Pretty please, admin?

I haven't laughed so much at a thread for ages. Then I realised they were actually being serious...
  14. That's why I laugh when I read the comments in the Guardian proclaiming, "WE MUST TAX THE RICH MORE!!". Chances are, most Guardian readers ARE the rich...
  15. Boris is slowly and quietly undermining Dave at the moment. He may play the buffoon, but he is a smart political operator.
  16. Ha ha. Terrible attempt. Were the other "local place's" carpets and curtains crushed and devalued?
  17. I always laugh at the 38 Degrees name. In their own words: "38 Degrees is the angle at which an avalanche happens." Delightfully stupid.
  18. The petition text: Hugo's right. Doesn't really say much, does it? Who actually signed up to this guff? It's terribly worded - the government could claim that the key point of the NHS reforms is to spend money wisely by dealing with responsible companies, thereby meeting the key demand. I reckon 38 Degrees would be horrified if this was formulated into a 'constitution', yet the government could claim it met their demands to the letter! So, according the the 38 Degrees site, today over 2300 fools actually signed a petition that inadvertently supports the coalitions NHS reforms.
  19. > London?s Fire Brigade is being cut and dismantled. Ooooh! Are we having a hyperbole competition??

  21. I thought he's be over in Peckham Rye, helping out with the regeneration project.
  22. foodie88, A quite detailed account of the incident. But you are quite vague in two points: "The young man defended himself." "The young men defended themselves..." Would you care to elaborate? How did they 'defend themselves'? Also, how come you were there on the day of the incident? Did you know the young man at the centre of the incident?
  23. North Korea? Burma/Myanmar? Both excellent role models...
  24. Not so much these days, Hugo. A lot of it is Javascript which, curiously, is nothing to do with Java.
