  1. My allotment would be defined as a wild wood in a year or so by your definition, henryb, unless I constantly weeded out all the many tree seedlings in it. There are many beautiful green areas around here - including actual historic woodland - without trying to pretend that something is what it isn't. It has nothing to do with "not seeing the beauty in it".
  2. It is pointless trying to give them facts, Penguin68. Judging by their posts on here, they don't seem able to understand them :(
  3. What happened to the bee? How can I not have noticed?! I liked the bee!

I buy mostly shops' own brands. I am always astounded (in a good way) at how little I have to pay at the checkout when I shop in Lidl.

No, but another window company did say that they used acoustic glass in Heathrow's meeting rooms. I didn't get them because of plane noise specifically, the fact that it's now very much less is a bonus :)

Until I had the new windows yes, the planes woke me up. And yes it's terrible in ED. When I moved here in 1991 it was indeed a pretty peaceful area. Now it isn't. It's still quite green though, thank goodness :)

The Co-Op in Lordship Lane doesn't have a car park, does it?
  12. I knew some extremely well off people about ten years back who shopped in Lidl, in particular (at that time) for the parmesan. My reaction was "Lidl?!?!?!?!" But when I actually went there, I could see why. Though TBH if I had that amount of money I wouldn't go out of my way to shop there, however good value the parmesan was :))

I really admire him for that. It must have taken a lot of guts to stick to his principles when he knew all eyes would be on him and the inevitable criticism follow. I just saw it on the news earlier. I wondered whether I would have mouthed it with my fingers crossed behind my back under those circumstances. Good for him. Not so much a breath of fresh air as a gust!
  14. Surely we're talking about common courtesy and consideration to others, aren't we? Why should you expect special treatment just because you're a woman (unless you're pregnant)? If someone is old or disabled or otherwise clearly suffering through having to stand, then the kind thing to do is to offer them a seat regardless of gender, surely?
  15. :))
  16. The people running this campaign haven't exactly restricted themselves to factual comment based on - well, facts - in the past ...... http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1533238,page=1 http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,1544552,1547768#msg-1547768

  18. Absolutely unbelievable that it took something like this for HSBC to look at their processes. And ed_pete, as no names have been mentioned (nor could they be I imagine) I'm not sure that there are any legal implications in emc suggesting a very plausible explanation for how this crime happened? Though, emc, how could they have got your card?
  19. I'd love to see a Lidl nearer (to me) than the one at the end of Bellenden Road. Their food and non-food items are fantastic value for money.

  22. So would I! Have loads of stuff awaiting painting!

Indeed. Great to hear of things like this (the challenging, not the theft!) - brilliant.
  24. What a nightmare. Hope you sort it all out, emc.
  25. Depending on what you want to use the table for, ordinary emulsion may not give a strong enough finish or wipe down easily? That chalk paint eg Annie Sloan is a pig to use, because it dries really quickly, as well as being extraordinarily expensive, and you have to wax it afterwards :( I think there are cheaper version of it now. ETA: Ooooops sorry PGC, hadn't looked at your link :))
