Poor Lady Barnett subsequently killed herself because of the shame of the publicity. And since she clearly didn't need to steal groceries, was probably genuinely ill or forgetful.

Some of the rolls were faulty batches in my opinion. Some are fine.
  4. Might a vet or other animal specialist be able to advise? Or ask the people at the house which had put out the basket what it had been used for, as that might narrow down the possibilities? Poor you.
  5. I once had a part-time job as a "mystery traveller" on London Buses, and driving was one of the many things I had to assess. If I considered a driver was driving dangerously, I had to phone immediately rather than just reporting it with the rest of the results for that bus. I only had to do it once, but I have a couple of times since reported dangerous driving on buses (you do need sufficient info about the particular bus, eg the run number on its side) and each time I was thanked and told it would be dealt with. I don't think it's true at all that bus drivers are encouraged to speed.
  6. So have the police not succeeded in catching up with them then? Sounds very frightening :(
  7. Lynne Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Did you actually see how many vehicles and > officers were involved? What has that got to do with it? Or do you have inside information on what the police thought they could potentially be dealing with? As said above - damned if they do and damned if they don't. They can't win.

  9. mattfarrer1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No it was just a stubborn lady blocking the route > so nobody else could go bye Is that true? What happened in the end, then? I passed by there around that time (on foot, luckily) and there was a queue of traffic right down the road with two cars head to head apparently unable to move. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often round here, it's like driving down a one-track country lane in many roads where cars are parked both sides and no room to pass something coming in the other direction. Did somebody just refuse to reverse out of the way?

  11. The people who are saying the police response was OTT are probably the first who would be complaining if the police had not (in their opinion) sent sufficient resources to an incident. The police are damned if they do and damned if they don't, aren't they? Be glad it's not you who has to make a quick decision on probably inadequate information.

  14. I went on Saturday to post a letter, and the Post Office was open but the letterbox outside was not!! Another person and I were told just to leave our letters on the counter. Very secure (not :( )

The first I heard of all this (I think - it was a while ago now) was when I was asked to sign a petition in North Cross Road during the busy market. I don't sign things without being quite sure what I'm putting my name to. I said I needed to look into it further. Most people will just sign, particularly with the emotive language being used by this group. I even know people who have got involved in a fundraising event for this, who had absolutely no idea that there is another side to the story. ETA: Sorry just seen Penguin's post above making a similar point.

  19. Oh, here we go again .... Yet another thread started on the same subject - is this the fourth now? Or possibly the fifth? I think the previous one was about the council "ripping down" "The Angel of Southwark" as the start of its "destruction." Then it turned out that yes, the council had in fact removed an angel statue from a grave - in order to restore it. Doesn't fill you with confidence in the accuracy of anything else posted on the subject by this group..... However I guess that if they use sufficient emotive language they can probably stir up "huge anger" in people who already have some "huge anger" which they are looking to channel into a convenient cause. ETA: And yet again, we have an overgrown part of a cemetery described as "woods". At least this time the thread title doesn't refer to the non-existent "Southwark Woods".
  20. That is really annoying. I bank with First Direct, and I use that HSBC branch to pay in change and sometimes to get change for floats for http://www.thegooseisout.com gigs. I don't particularly want to lug loads of heavy change to bloody Peckham :(

I don't think giving factual information to counter somebody else's post can be considered "bullying". However calling someone a "pathetic playground bully" might be....
  22. You'll probably get a better response in the family section of the forum?

"Sell by" dates are different from "use by" dates. I'd be wary of eating some things, including chicken, past their USE by date, personally.
