I've talked to him about his garden. It's very retro (though apparently dahlias are back in fashion), but clearly lovingly cared for. He also helps at least one of his neighbours down the hill with their front garden. He's a sweetie (technical term) 👍 And Kathleen Olander, surely you don't believe everything some journalist has misunderstood and written in the Standard? I'm presuming the pre fab was built after the war, after whatever was there before it was bombed. That was surely why most pre fabs in London were built?

Fair enough points. I've never been to one. It wouldn't occur to me that a meeting like that was the right place to have a "quiet word" with someone! Maybe the purposes of them should be better publicised, or maybe I just haven't been paying attention. I'm a bit worried about your comment about "getting an informal look at people". Why would they need to do that? Surely it's a relatively small self selected group of people who attend these meetings?

A Zoom meeting is a great idea. It would be much more convenient, though it possibly has other downsides, eg it may exclude people who aren't familiar with Zoom or don't have the necessary technology. Though tbh - and making a huge assumption - I wouldn't have thought there were many of them in this area.

Oxfam have an online site and you can filter by size, colour etc requirements. Returns are also easy if it doesn't fit or isn't suitable.

I think it's probably both. Most people would not want to go to a pub in late evening and find it full of children. The pub would soon lose customers!

Despite our best intentions, we used to go here every Christmas Day (when we were in London) after The Ivy House closed (well, we had to pass it on the way home, and our willpower failed us) so this year we thought we would book Christmas lunch there. Sadly they are not opening at all on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day, let alone doing food 😥

We've booked at the Cherry Tree now, at vast expense, thanks for the post Louisemurray. Will live on bread and water for a while afterwards 🤣 Haven't eaten there for a long time, but the Christmas Day menu looks good and recent reviews seem good. One of the worst meals I ever had in my life was a Sunday roast at the Dog in Dulwich Village, which I believe is related to the Plough? I may be wrong. I belatedly remembered (after booking at The Cherry Tree) a Christmas many decades back when my father took the whole (large) family to a meal in Streatham which was accompanied by an Elvis impersonator. The food was not memorable, but singing along to Elvis more than made up for it 🤣

Does anyone on here use MailerLite for sending bulk emails (about 850 subscribers at the moment, following a cull) ? I use it to send newsletters, as what I was previously using started charging. I've been using MailerLite for some time now, but I can't get to grips with the editing system, so I always end up with weird spacing. Wondering if anybody on here uses it and can advise!

Basically the buck surely stops much higher up than this delivery office. For some reason, senior managers don't appear to be taking action about poor management further down the line. I can't believe this is just a staffing issue. But if it is, how come they can suddenly employ two more posties, after years of clear shortcomings? I know Helen Hayes raised it at a higher level on more than one occasion. Things improved for a while (ie the backlog got delivered) then just deteriorated again. I don't know whether she and Ellie Reeves have discussed it, but surely they must have had some kind of handover when the constituency boundaries changed?

Thanks, but there's no public transport on Christmas Day. I looked at the Plough (thanks Beansprout), but last time we ate there the food was truly appalling. And we once went to a Burns Night there, admittedly years ago, which was like something out of Fawlty Towers. So I don't really want to risk paying £85 a head plus drinks! Oh well, live and learn, clearly I should have looked at all this long ago. We are at home this year, so will be starting the day with drinks at the lovely Ivy House. The Clock House (for some reason now The Clock House Tavern) has always been open on Christmas afternoon, so we thought we would book lunch there instead of getting home and having to cook, but the new management has decided not to open on Christmas or Boxing Day. And I've missed the Waitrose (sorry) slots for the days when their Christmas food is available. Also M&S are either no longer providing a pick up in Lordship Lane for Christmas orders or else their slots are all full too. So basically this is very poor organisation on my part and I only have myself to blame. The only upside is that I won't have to spend at least two days away from home trying to avoid "discussions" with various relatives with different views from mine about various important things in the news.

I see they quoted (and named) one resident who blamed Labour politicians for Royal Mail's shortcomings and complained that his Spectator should have been delivered on Friday. Don't know whether to laugh or cry. Anyway, Ellie Reeves is encouraging everyone to let her know of delays in their post, if possible with envelopes as proof of dates (I presume you can scan and email).

It doesn't have to be a standard Christmas dinner!

Just had my flu and Covid jabs at Kristals. I was early, but didn't have to wait long, and there is a reasonably big waiting area which only had one or two people in it. The jabs themselves were quick and easy, and the staff friendly and helpful, so all good I realised when I got there that it wasn't actually Kristals I went to last time. It must have been the smaller pharmacy on that stretch, but they didn't have a notice in their window saying they were doing the jabs What a strange place Kristals is, though! I could have picked up some hardware stuff while I was there!
