FACT: He had a gun loaded with bullets. People that live by the gun should expect they may die by it. Make no mistake it was the actions of the Duggan family turning up with protesters that set-up the dynamics for riots. Can't you see that if you have an angry group outside a police station that the police would be reluctant to say anything in case they get it wrong. Duggan had only just died, people need to understand that things like that take time to get answers, not all life is like fast-food takeaways.

EXACTLY! Lewisham has no summer uni this year either. Last year the local secondary school had courses running through the holidays so they could just walk up the road to them.

Yes there are some in the most deprived areas but the courses at the albany are too far away, won't take my 12 year old and assume my kids like music and dance. Not really available or known about for the little thug that lives next door to me either.

You miss the point entirely. You don't miss what you don't have. It's when you take things away that people will naturally feel devalued. Relative poverty is a feeling, not a state. We bombard our children with sexual images in the media and then tell them not to have sex. We bombard our children with images of the latest gadgets and charge the highest prices for them and then wonder why they can't live without them. We tell them in nursery they can't climb the tree or stand on the wall or shout or scream when they play outdoors(there are many nurseries that do this). We tell them at school to sit still and be quiet and listen. We tell them they can't play in the street or cross the road on their own. We buy our children violent video games and then wonder why they become aggressive. As a society we are hypocrites. We tell our children not to do things when we are doing them ourselves. Of course poor parenting contributes but what about addressing the issues that contribute to poor parenting? The truth is the UK is the worst place in the developed world for children to grow up in. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6359363.stm It's offical. Some kids survive, but many just don't make it. Then when you take stuff away from them in the cuts and not the pesioners how do you think they feel? And what do they do with the void that is left? If society doesn't think they are worth investing in then why should they care about society? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6359363.stm

So, where are the parents of these > people. > Believe it or not some parents are actually at work whilst their children are left to do as they please. My neighbour, who is a single parent, has two young teenagers she leaves at home when she goes to work and one of them causes trouble when she is not there and has been invloved with the police. Councils have had to drastically cut the youth provision during school hols this year so there are not the activities available there have been in the past. This year there is no 'Summer Uni' in Lewisham for teenagers which was a really fabulous provision for two weeks of the summer hols. Additionally, LAs tend to cater for early and middle childhood but there is very little for teenagers to do. Where there are activities they can be very expensive - sometimes upto ?30 per day. This year my teenagers have very little to do because of the cuts so I sent them out of London to spend time with family but not many people can do that. If they play in the street people complain if a ball nudges their car. If they go to the shops adults stare at them suspiciously. If they go to the free swimming they get bullied by other boys. There used to be free organised ball games in the local park but this has been stopped by the cuts. The parks are not well supervised and my boys have been mugged by other boys even when I was walking a distance behind them. They refuse to go to the adventure playgrounds because it's full of younger children. The local library has closed....I could go on. Children's services have been cut in a disgraceful way and unfortunately when young people feel society does not care about them they have little reason to care for society.
  7. THEY ARE NOT ALL KIDS. Many are in their 20's and 30's. With over 500 arrests in London plenty of troublemakers have suddenly been wipe off the streets in one swoop.
  8. Gina bean - They are not just stupid schoolchildren. There are many grown men in their 20s and 30s doing this, the same type as Duggan who carry around illegal hand guns (police have confirmed Duggan had an illegal weapon and it was not a replica). I appreciate you are trying to be reassuring but it's misleading f some are thinking we can take some of these people on.
  9. This was exactly what happened to my first child. Eventually she was shooting poo across the room (no joke) everytime I opened her nappy. Cutting the dairy worked for me but make sure you seek medical advice to ensure you get enough calcium in your diet.
  10. Just been out and it's a ghost town. Most of the shops on Honor Oak Park have closed. Shame it's such a nice sunny day.
  11. Have you thought that whilst you stand outside the shops your homes may be looted/burgled?
  12. Reports on the Honor Oak forum look genuine. One shop manager says Whitgift Shopping Centre Croydon have been told to close and I know this is true as my husband has seen the shops closing up there. He says Croydon stinks of smoke. There is also a post saying people were asked by the police to leave Crystal Palace park http://www.se23.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=5056&page=1
  13. I'm surprised there are any kids up so early. I mean it's only 3 o'clock.
  14. We need to remember that it is school holidays and a group of youths walking down the road would ordinarliy not cause any concern but now is making everyone nervous.
  15. I have to say it's a bit of a maze negotiating all the different threads. Can't we jut have one? Or at least have some of the new discussions deleted and put together?
  16. 'Here's the real reason: Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams blogs about the reasons for the violence: "Everyone wants to be rich and famous, without wanting to work hard to reach those otherwise acceptable ambitions' so it's the X factor's fault then. haha. Simon will be pleased.
  17. Magpie, I see you didn't add Duggans' parents to your list. Turning up at a police station with a very large group of people was the core reason why this kicked off. Why didn't they just go alone? If it was my son I would be ashamed that he was even on a police wanted list.
  18. EMA? Look closely at the footage. They are grown adults not just teenagers. However, it is true that the ones who have been most affected by public cuts have been young people. Closing Connexions, which helps the most disaffected and problem-loaded youths, is a big mistake.
  19. Judging by some of the other comments on other articles in the Voice it seems to be an open platform for racist attitudes and beliefs.
  20. I think betterinthesun is referring to the comments posted under the Voice article rather than the article itself
  21. there's a discussion going on in the Voice with the race card being held up http://www.the-voice.co.uk/article/black-headteachers-school-facing-exam-cheat-allegations
  22. Another article in the Evening Standard today. I can't see how it has been going on for five years though - their results have been rubbish up until 2 years ago. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23973392-school-expected-us-to-help-pupils-pass-exams-claims-teacher.do
  23. Winston, I'm relieved you have not said too much in response as you could jepordise the investigation. Teachers need to sit quiet on here and let the exam boards do their job, otherwise you could give any who have cheated a way of wiggling out of it.
  24. Debi, I really feel for you at the moment. These allegations must be making life very miserable for you and your family after your son has taken his exams and was looking forward to getting his results next month. I do hope things get sorted out quickly so your son can get on with his future. I expect that if you call the exam board as a concerned parent they may let you know what course of action they are taking and how long it is expected to take, and what it means for your son. You may also be able to add your son's experience to the investigation.
