NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. Two rides for June 14th. A short ride from Dulwich including 2 places that really surprised me when first seen and a long ride heading north up the River Lea. June 14. Ride 1. Two Surprises in Brixton. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/two-surprises-in-brixton-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1401961718239?aff=oddtdtcreator > When exploring on Healthy rides you occasionally come across something very surprising. Two of the most amazing were Brixton Mill and Ebony Horse Club. In the middle of houses and next to a prison, a fully functioning windmill. In a small park near Loughborough Junction, a riding stables with people circulating on horses. These 2 locations have been incorporated into this gentle 9½ mile circuit along with several parks and a common. Start will be Dulwich Park Café (Clock Café, middle of the park) at 10am. Back at 12.30pm. Route up Greendale, Ruskin Park, Wyck Gardens (Ebony Horse Club), Clapham Common, Blenheim Gardens Estate (Brixton Windmill), Brockwell Park, Belair Park and back to Dulwich Park. Provisional route https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1g6TJbpUw9xeGTnDCSaaCw6CxoTBxxb0&usp=sharing. Bruce leading. A ride pretty much anyone could do on any kind of bike. A good one on which to bring a friend. June 14. Ride 2. Walthamstow Wetlands < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/walthamstow-wetlands-ride-tickets-1402011376769?aff=oddtdtcreator> Information form Ride Leader Jean. It is a long ride (22 Miles) so bring drinks and snacks. Starting from London Bridge (Gateway Needle, south side), we take Tooley Street to Tower Bridge, where we cross the river and follow the CS2 through Whitechapel and Mile End, to Bow, where we access the Lea Navigation path, following it up to Hackney Marshes, at Markfield Park, where we stop for a break. On the return trip, we cross briefly to the other side of the canal, coming down through Hackney Marshes, and then we retrace our steps, passing by Bow and continuing to the Limehouse Cut, which brings us down to Limehouse, from where we return to Tower Bridge, and London Bridge. Depart: London Bridge 9.30am. Return: 2.30pm Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. Future/provisional ride ideas can be viewed on our planning spreadsheet.

Owen and I have decided to postpone the Epping Forest Ramble until July 5th. Due to bad forecast for Saturday and only 3 registrants. Hope we get better weather on 5th July. For tomorrow there is space on the Power Stations ride starting 10am from Burgess Park. This is shorter and on tarmac all the way so will be OK if the forecast is correct. Dress appropriately!

It's wood so you can compost it. Probably best to use it like grass cuttings sprinkled into other stuff to let in air and water.

An Inner London circuit of ex-Power Stations and an Outer London, train assisted, ride in Epping Forest. Ride 1. A Trio of (ex)-Power Stations. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-trio-of-ex-power-stations-bike-ride-tickets-1391591951989?aff=oddtdtcreator > Bruce leading a circuit to Tate Modern, Lots Road and Battersea Power. The large power station buildings have been preserved for these three. The uses of the sites are now very different – an art gallery, largely residential and a mixed residential and retail/leisure development. Chance to compare the different fates of these landmark sites and consider if they are now contributing as much as when they kept the lights on and the tube system running. Ride starts 10am from Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café, Chumleigh Gdns). Back streets/Cyclway to Tate Modern followed by a long ride to Lots Road via the Imperial War Museum, Vauxhall Bridge and the embankment. From Lots Rd, across Albert Bridge and through Battersea Park (probable refreshment break) to Battersea Power Station. Then back to Burgess Park via Thessaly Rd, Larkfield Park and quiet streets across Stockwell. 21km, 13 miles, flat. Should be back around 1pm allowing for look around time at each power station. Probable route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1EvmwKPUQbLmT7TY4ICGVJhXzThhOZfY&usp=sharing Ride 2. Epping Forest Ramble < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/epping-forest-ramble-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1391596836599?aff=oddtdtcreator > Owen seems determined to get us all out into the Essex countryside. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station. We are mostly off road - 70% on gravel, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. However NOT a road bike with slim wheels, need hybrid size tyres with plenty grip. Sections of the route are “undulating” and overall it will be a challenging ride, A reasonable level of fitness will be needed. GPX file of route at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/route-for-epping-forest-ramble/ Getting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride, trains every 15 min, fare £3.60. Could you give the news source so that I can see whether it is reliable (like BBC) or nuts ( like Reform conspiracy insights)?

Hi I have got lead covering the skylights on my flat roof. Unfortunately the sheet of lead has slid down and exposed some of the wood support underneath. It needs pushing back up (i'm not strong enough to do this) and securing in place If this seems like a job for you, please message me through the forum. I'm in Nunhead.

Makes me wish I had gone.

Councils are not private companies though they can set them up. Do you have any evidence that Southwark has done this?
-
you could investigate selling it. No Ulez outside London. Buses and trains? If you are that old you must have a Freedom Pass

Hope to finish back at Greenwich at 1.30, but with uncertainties on a long ride please allow for possible 2pm finish. Route out: round Thames path to London Cable Car across river. Note this means we cannot have e-bikes on this ride, sorry. From Victoria Dock on to Beckton Corridor off road path and round past Beckton Alps, bit of cycle path and back streets to Wanstead Park. Return across Wanstead Flats, quiet streets to Olympic Park, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal Towpath/Mile End Park, west side of Isle of Dogs to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. There are only 2 planned stops: at the Artists’ Garden near Temple and a coffee stop at the Park Sports Cafe in Hyde Park. If we’re quick, we might be able to include a short detour to the Graffiti tunnel near Waterloo, but that will be dependent on time. We should be able to complete the 24km round trip in about 2.5 hours. In order to avoid too much hassle with tourists visiting central London over Easter, we will have an early start at 9.30 am. The planned route is:https://www.komoot.com/tour/2130788567?share_token=am1yUJ9Kh5dtXAyZ7iYAPQDgWSnW3K89az9KBpUVxuvIGmTtxv&ref=wtd 21st April, Easter Monday. Love them or loathe them it is still an excuse for a bike ride! Werner likes anniversaries so has planned, and will lead, a ride that follows the borough boundary as closely as possible. Start 9am, Southwark Needle, London Bridge. An anticlockwise route takes us first to the Lambeth boundary for a long stetch finishing at the top of Gipsy Hill where we meet Bromley and Croydon. Turn along Crystal Palace Parade where we soon meet Lewisham. We then follow the Lewisham boundary back to the Thames at St Georges Square, just east of South Dock. Follow the river, also of course the boundary, back to London Bridge. We expect to finish at around 1pm after covering about 30km. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”.
