  1. As I think Colville might agree, it's hard to overemphasise the level of chaos. My complaint line went to BT and was fine. The problem was that he had to get info from OR and his only contact was OR customer service which was the normal level of customer service you find everywhere ie didn't answer the phone, didn't give any sort of sensible answer when they did etc. And they were one company, OR was BT's only supplier. "Our computer systems don't talk to one another" the BT guy said, by way of extenuation. Try Ofcom
  2. I had a choice and decided to give up my landline and rely on mobile. I'm 71. Key to this choice was learning that in a power cut a digital landline would not work. I did change my internet to BT. That was fully installed by a very nice Open Reach engineer who plugged it all together. The whole experience was a lesson in chaos (BT/Openreach) and frustration (me). But the end product was good. The guys who did the work were charming and delightful, fully trustable to help plug in the digital ohones,
  3. NB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. Two rides for Sat 25th November. Both start at 10am at the Café in Burgess Park. Simon’s ride is a circular route to Greenwich and Rotherhithe taking 2.5 hours. Jane’s is a 3 hour ride, and only she knows where you are going. I am sure this element of mystery will appeal to some of you! Ride 1. Burgess Park, Cutty Sark, Stave Hill Loop < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/se-london-sights-cycle-ride-tickets-761880062777 > Start/finish Fuorvito Café (ex Park Life Café), Burgess Park, Chumleigh Gardens, SE5 0RJ. Meet 10am. Simon S. leading. An easy-paced, pretty flat ride taking in some iconic sights of SE London: the Cutty Sark, the Thames Path, Greenland Dock and Stave Hill - not to mention Millwall FC's stadium (twice!). Stave Hill is a man-made small conical mound close to Russia Woodland in Rotherhithe. You walk up it to get the view – not a hill you cycle up. Nearly all this route is on quiet cycleways. Coffee stop at the Cutty Sark. Fantastic views from Stave Hill. 12 miles. Route map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1HhD8WldGdPFxAVTsiInWeS3QU1wpJZu8&usp=sharing Ride 2. Mystery Ride from Burgess Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-from-burgess-park-tickets-761884385707> As for ride 1, start/finish Fuorvito Café (ex Park Life Café), Burgess Park, Chumleigh Gardens, SE5 0RJ, meet up 10am. Ride leader Jane has given me just the following information for you: “3 hour ride with coffee stop - not sure where to but I'll know on the day.” Good luck. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/
  4. NB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. We have 2 rides for the 18th Nov. Both are rides we did about this time last year. Amanda’s longish Camden Market ride and my short Streatham Common ride. One from London Bridge, the other from Dulwich. Two quite different rides, so you can choose whichever suits you best. NOTE. These are the rides for next week. On this Saturday, Nov 11th, we have the Lord Mayors Show ride starting at London Bridge < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lord-mayors-show-cycle-ride-tickets-750929258627 > and Parks, Cemeteries and a Museum ride from Peckham. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parks-cemeteries-and-a-museum-peckham-to-horniman-museum-cycle-ride-tickets-750916219627 > Ride 1. London Bridge to Camden Lock < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-camden-lock-cycle-ride-tickets-754926614827 > Camden Lock - shops, markets, cafes, busy. On a ride, normally avoid it. However, it is a great destination – and lots of options for a coffee stop. Start 9.30am at Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge, close to the station, SE1 2PF) with Amanda leading for an estimated 3.5 hour ride. Outward route along south side to Westminster Bridge, then Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Oxford St, Baker St, Regents Park Outer Circle, Camden High St. Coffee stop. Return Canal Tow Path to Kings Cross Granary Square, Cycleway 6 to Farringdon, up Ludgate Hill and past St Pauls. Down to Cycleway 3 and if time loop over Tower Bridge and Tooley St back to London Bridge. Some roads with lots of traffic. But pretty much non-stop sight-seeing and photo-ops! Report from last year at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-reports-nov-19th-2022/ Ride 2. Dulwich to Streatham Common < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-streatham-common-cycle-ride-tickets-754945009847> Ride Leader Bruce. Start 10am for a 2 hour ride. Start/finish location the Café in Dulwich Park. Short ride (8 miles), undulating, should be time for a coffee at the Rookery Café on the Common and for a peep at the striking Rookery gardens. Mostly street cycling, some sections a bit busy. Will look in at the velodrome. On the return route excellent views from Norwood Park then finish with a long downhill back to Dulwich. Lynn, Bruce 11:26 AM (10 minutes ago) Healthy Ride, Peckham to Streatham, has been cancelled. Sorry about this, but family issues mean I cannot lead on Saturday. 5. Power of attorney is straightforward to do oneself. For a will consider Anthony Gold. As executors, I second Malumbu. Choose sensible relatives considerably younger than yourself. If you haven't got any, consider a solicitor

  7. NB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. We have 2 rides for the 11th Nov, both lasting about 2½ hours. Parks and cemeteries takes you on a good ride to the Horniman and back. The pirate run to the closed roads for the Lord Mayors Show does not ride any great distance, but there is lots to see. Lord Mayors Show < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lord-mayors-show-cycle-ride-tickets-750929258627 > Second Saturday in November is date for the annual Lord Mayors Show. A procession of bands, floats and carriages around the streets of the City. The streets are cleared of traffic. There is a narrow window mid-morning when, expertly led by Werner, we have been able to enjoy these empty streets. And also sneak a view at some of the participants preparing for the parade which starts 11.03 (after the 2 minute silence for Remembrance) from Mansion House. Start 10am at London Bridge (south side next to the Needle). Cross London Bridge, then negotiate with police and other security staff. Route clearly very uncertain. Can opt to stay and watch more of the parade or return with a guided group aiming to get back to London Bridge 12-12.30. Report of last year’s ride, gives you a feel for this event, at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/healthy-ride-reports-nov-12th-2022/ Parks, Cemeteries and a Museum - Peckham to Horniman Museum. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parks-cemeteries-and-a-museum-peckham-to-horniman-museum-cycle-ride-tickets-750916219627 > Cycle a circular route across SE London through parks and cemeteries to the Horniman Museum. Simon S. leading. About 10 miles. Start 10am in Peckham Square, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Finish around 12.30. Outward from Peckham Square via Nunhead Cemetery, Peckham Rye Park and Camberwell Old Cemetery. Back via Camberwell New Cemetery, Brockley, Ladywell Cemetery, and Hilly Fields. Easy-paced ride with a few ups and downs, but nothing serious. Plenty off road paths. Should be time for a coffee break. Everyone welcome. Report on this ride in Jan 2022. Route map at http://goo.gl/XzFkTD. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. 9. NB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link below We have just one ride organised at present. Will see how registrations go trying to arrange a second ride. Christopher Wren and Greenwich < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/christopher-wren-and-greenwich-cycle-ride-tickets-743408574057 > A nice easy ride to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of Christopher Wren and related architecture in Greenwich. It complements our earlier ride looking at Wren buildings in Central London. The ride is 10 miles most of which are getting us from Peckham to Greenwich and back using different routes. In the middle there is a short loop through Greenwich, stopping at the General Wolff lookout in Greenwich Park, then riding down to the Royal College. Meet Peckham Square (Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, Peckham Library, SE15 5RY) 10am. Finish back there approx. 12.30. Bruce Leading. Outward via canal path and Cycleway 10. Up the hill in Greenwich Park (walk if you need to). From the viewpoint you can see Wren’s Royal Observatory (built 1675-6) next to you. In front of you is a view of the Royal Naval College designed by Wren and built in 1696-1712. Slightly nearer is the Queens House. This is an earlier building constructed 1616-1635 and designed by Inigo Jones. Interesting to compare this neo-classical building with Wren’s designs 80 years later. The site architect for the Royal College was Wren’s associate Nicholas Hawksmoor. He was 20 years younger than Wren and himself built several prominent buildings in Lonon. One can be seen from the viewpoint slightly to the left, St Alphege’s Church, built 1712-14. A nice balance of riding and culture. Mostly off road/quiet streets. Come and join us, everyone welcome on any kind of bike. 11. It sounds like a corporate decision rather than anything pharmaceutical. Nunhead shops include two pharmacies in a brief shopping street both flourishing. The staff at Lloyds may have been demoralised if the shutdown was happening however hard they worked.

  14. NB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below We have 2 new rides for the 21st, one long, one short. Ride 1 London Black History < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-black-history-ride-tickets-738937460837 > October is Black History Month and Werner and his neighbour Sam have designed a short ride visiting sites associated with Black History in London, mostly pre-Windrush. Start at 10am from London Bridge (Southwark Needle), plan to be finished by 1pm. Route will include (not in this order!) Royal Exchange, St Thomas’ Hospital, Nelson’s Column, Senate House, British Museum, Dr Johnson's house and a few City locations with links to slavery (e.g. Jamaica Coffee House, Cornhill). 12 mile circuit. We are reckoning on up to 3 hours, depending on length of stops. Ride 2. Cutty Sark to Wanstead Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-wanstead-park-ride-tickets-738942255177 > Start 9.30am at Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the early start. Hope to finish back at Greenwich at 1.30, but with this new route not certain about timing so please allow for possible 2pm finish. Route out: round Thames path to London Cable Car (Emirates Airline no more), fly across, on to Beckton Corridor off road path and round past Beckton Alps, bit of cycle path and back streets to Wanstead Park. Return across Wanstead Flats, quiet streets to Olympic Park, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal Towpath/Mile End Park, west side of Isle of Dogs to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. If the lifts are working, complete ride by crossing to the Cutty Sark. If not, end the ride at the tunnel. Riders who wish to cross will be guided to Mudchute DLR Station where there is step free access. There is also step free access at Greenwich DLR station. Note this is a long route with a lot of continuous riding. We will be at our usual easy pace, but probably cycling for 3 hours +. You get a rest on the Cable Car (remember to bring some way of paying the fare) and a coffee break. Nevertheless worth bringing a snack and a drink. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Ride 1 Tour de Rotherhithe < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tour-de-rotherhithe-ride-tickets-732213729977 > Rotherhithe has a remarkable history. This 2 hour ride takes you on a tour. Due to of the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling. Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park, King Stairs Gardens, then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower, the first underwater tunnel anywhere (by Brunel) and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past Surrey Water and along the canal to Canada Water. All this in 10 miles and as a final bonus – this route is entirely without hills! No coffee break as this is a short ride, but time for a coffee at the end. Bruce leading. Annotated route map at https://goo.gl/5pFd9b. GPX file attached. Last ridden April 2022, report here. Ride 2. Dulwich to Frieze Outdoor Sculptures in Regents Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ride-from-dulwich-to-frieze-sculptures-in-regents-park-tickets-732300118367 >. Along the river to Westminster Bridge, then St James Park and on to Hyde Park. From Hyde park we will make our way to Regents Park to the English Garden to see the Sculptures on show for Frieze 2023. This is a really fun outdoor display held every October. You will find an audio/video guide here. We'll allow a half hour to look around the 21 pieces and take a coffee break nearby. If you want longer looking at the sculptures - then bring your own drink/snack. Returning across Hyde Park then Exhibition Road and South Kensington down to the river and across to Battersea from where we will ride through Clapham Common and Brockwell park back to Dulwich Park. The ride will be about 20 miles and allowing extra time for the exhibition, we will aim to be back in Dulwich by 2pm. Report of last year’s very popular Frieze ride here. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. 17. Building lots of social housing. Not enough, of course, but a lot around in Nunhead.
  18. Southwark adult social services did a brilliant job of finding a place for my special needs daughter and funding it. They have kept small libraries open. No library deserts.
  19. seconded. Krystals, in Nunhead, will do both flu and Covid. Very efficiently
  20. Also Shingles jabs. Being 71 I was offered it when I turned up for the flu jab and had both together.
  21. From the environmental charity CPRE (Council for the Protection of Rural England?) London. This Saturday they are running an nature cycle event in Dulwich Park. It'll be a gently paced cycle starting from Herne Hill Velodrome, going on to explore all the beautiful nature of Dulwich Park in more detail and thereby boost everyone's knowledge of their local area. The event will be led by gifted writer, botanist and nature communicator, Leif Bersweden and everyone will be introduced to the wonderful trees and wild plants of south-east London. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/inclusive-nature-cycle-tickets-722722451307 By looking at everything from native and naturalised trees, to the tiniest plants sprouting from cracks in the pavement, you'll add to your knowledge of the local area, learn about the plants with which you share your home city, and gain an increased understanding and appreciation of London's plant life. Plants are just as crafty, determined and devious as animals are when they're after something, we just need to take the time to stop and notice them! It is thanks to the help and involvement of the Linnean Society of London - that your guide will be Leif Bersweden, a writer, botanist and nature communicator with a face-down, bottom-up approach to watching wildlife. Leif grew up in Wiltshire where he taught himself how to identify the local flora and has been championing our wild plants and the joy they bring ever since. He is the author of The Orchid Hunter and Where the Wildflowers Grow. This event is welcome to everyone, no matter their limitations, and would be especially beneficial for individuals who find it easier to cycle than walk! This event has been organised in partnership with Wheels for Wellbeing, a charity who have worked with thousands of Disabled children and adults who face barriers to taking part in any physical activity and have shown that anyone can enjoy cycling, given the right equipment, support and environment. An accompanying companion and other family members are also welcome If you need an adapted bike fot this event, Wheels for Wellbeing can provide the cycling equipment you require. You'll need to contact them in advance to arrange a suitable bicycle that works for you. Please contact them to arrange this at [email protected] or 0207 346 8482 as soon as possible Tickets are £5 per attendee for working adults or £2.50 if you are not working, over 60 or under 15. We want this event to be accessible to all so if that payment a barrier to you, please email [email protected]
