  1. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. Do not turn up for rides if you have not been able to register. The number limit is defined in our Rusk Assessment for Healthy Rides. If a serious injury occurred on a ride and we were found not to have conformed to our RA then London Cycling Campaign, our parent organisation, could be liable for damages that could bankrupt LCC. So please only attend rides for which you have registered on Eventbrite. On the 16rh August we have two rides, both popular routes we ride most years. One is a longish ride to Kensington Palace led by Amanda. The other short ride led by Bruce will go looking for butterflies to coincide with the national Big Butterfly Count. Ride 1. Butterfly Cycle Ride in Southwark and Lambeth < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/butterfly-cycle-ride-in-southwark-and-lambeth-tickets-1573792839749?aff=oddtdtcreator > 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. Start/finish Peckham Square, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. Bruce leading his award winning ride on a 9 mile loop through parks and open spaces where hopefully we will see some butterflies. Ride coincides with the Big Butterfly Count. We will not be counting but will visit good places to count if you are inspired to return. Main sites to be visited: Peckham Rye Park (wildflower meadow), Ruskin Park (Nature Reserve), Myatts Fields (wild area), Burgess Park. Easy ride with plenty of time allowed for hunting for butterflies. Route at http://goo.gl/v14knG . Deliberately making this s short ride with no coffee break. This was our default format for years and will still suit some riders. I will be getting a coffee at the finish if anyone wants to join me and chat before heading home. More information about the Big Butterfly Count at https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/. Report from July 23rd 2022 ride at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-reports-23rd-july-2022/ Ride 2, London Bridge to Kensington Palace < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-kensington-palace-circular-cycle-ride-tickets-1573750553269?aff=oddtdtcreator > Start 9.30 am at London Bridge (The Southwark Needle, south side). Estimated finish 1:00pm. Amanda leading a circular ride. Out along the south side of the river and over Westminster Bridge, then Horseguards and the Mall and through Hyde Park to Kensington Palace. Return via Battersea Park and the Power Station. Final stretch back along the river and C14. Coffee break, probably at Black Cab Cafe, 9 Elms Lane. As usual keeping to the quieter streets. Lots and lots to see. About 15 miles and flat, so we are giving ourselves plenty of time for a nice easy-paced ride. Report from 2024 ride at: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-17th-august-2024/ Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. --
  2. I didn't try to get out of the new contract. There is the statutory cooling off period (as you say) and I was very fed up with being messed about. I just switched.
  3. you have to really, truly switch, not just threaten to. Then, when you have actually accepted someone else and they have been contacted to change the account, then and only then will they make you a seriously competitive offer.
  4. NOTE. Please register for the rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link below. Last minute replacement long ride following postponement of the Hackney ride. Many thanks to Jean for stepping in. Note ride will not start from Cutty Sark. Instead will match the short ride, starting in Dulwich. Reminder of short ride: Dulwich to Crystal Palace Park Loop. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-crystal-palace-loop-ride-tickets-1544967020949?aff=oddtdtcreator > 10am start at Dulwich Clock Cafe in Dulwich Park. Plan to finish there at 12.30. Eduardo leading an 11 mile loop via Nunhead, Waterlink Way and Penge to Crystal Palace Park. New ride 2, Aug 9th. Dulwich to Chiswick. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-chiswick-park-cycle-ride-tickets-1566617036729?aff=oddtdtcreator > Starting from Dulwich Park Café at 10 am. Out on South side crossing Putney Bridge and on to Chiswick Park. Back by Albert Bridge & Battersea Park. Back at Dulwich by 2pm. 22 miles, easy pace, pretty much flat, great forecast. General Information Riders of all ages are welcome on Southwark Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. 5. My elderly aunt and an even more elderly friend used to take snippets of plants in famous gardens to use as cuttings.

Coffee stop at the Green and Brown Café then the ascent through the park, via the dinosaurs, to Crystal Palace Parade. Finally the glorious downhill all the way back to Dulwich Park. A ride we regularly do in mid-winter, but it will make an excellent summer ride too. Everyone welcome on an easy ride with lots to see. Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=15cFwfv7hYe-kAWTFuyPrOMIVyPdfIgPm&usp=sharing. GPX route map attached. Ride 2, Aug 9th. Gloria leading a circular route that is unusual in 2 ways. First we will use the Shuttle Bus through the Silvertown Tunnel. This has capacity for 7 folding bikes and 8 non folders. In order to have the possibility to get on one bus will restrict number. We will have 7 tickets for standard bikes and another 7 for folders. Please make sure you register with the appropriate ticket. If there is a lot of interest we will increase numbers and if necessary use 2 buses. Important that if you find the ride full you go on the Wait List so we know the demand. The second unusual feature of this ride is to end NOT at the start. We will stop the ride a little before Greenwich at Canada Water. Anyone needing to get to Greenwich can use well signed Cycleway 4. Route. Thames path to the O2 for the Shuttle. Cross the river then use a street route via Plaistow to West Ham Park. Next to Stratford and on to the Grenway for a short stretch to join the Lea Navigation path not far from the London Stadium. Follow the path for ¾ mile to Hackney Marshes. Bit of an explore then return to Lea Navigation Path. Back track to White Post Lane and cross Navigation and then take the bridge over the A12 to reach Victoria Park. Exit Victoria Park to Grove Rd, then Mile End, Cycleway 2 (Whitechapel Rd), Cannon Street Lane, Cable St (Cycleway 3), Tower Bridge and Cycleway 4 to Canada Water. Aim is to be back by 1.30. 9. NOTE. You must register for the ride on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. The new rides with information here are for Saturday 2nd August, On Aug 2nd we have 2 long rides. We are trying again with Amanda’s Cody Dock ride that was cancelled 2 weeks back due to an Amber weather warning. The second ride will be a new one, Owen continuing his campaign to get us out into Essex. Aug 02, Ride 1. Cutty Sark to Cody Dock. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-1526644116649?aff=oddtdtcreator > Please note. Electric bikes are not allowed on the cable car. This means we cannot accommodate e-bikes on this ride. Sorry. 9.30 start (not usual 10am) from Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Amanda leading a cross river circuit to Cody Dock. Cody Dock is run as a charitable Social Enterprise with the aim of regenerating the dock and surrounding waterways (see https://codydock.org.uk). What has been created is quite special. And it includes a Cafe where we will take a break. We plan to use the “by air and by sea” route. Outward will go to the Cable Car at the O2 via the Thames path, then fly across the river and head for Cody Dock. Return will be via the free Woolwich Ferry followed by the Thames path back to Greenwich. If short of time will return via Isle of Dogs and use DLR from Mudchute to cross the river. Bring Travel Card etc. for the Cable car (full fare is £7). Aim is to be back by 1.30pm. Aug 02, Ride 2. Upminster to Southend. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator > The ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Hills country park at One Tree Hill for toilets and a coffee truck. Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café. At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break. Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes. The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at The Doorstep Cafe, The Knares, in Basildon. We'll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. Upminster station is step free. In Zone 6, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument, 42min, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St, 22min, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station, mostly along busy Station Road. Personal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen I remember as a 9 year old boy, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter's night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour, a keen fisherman, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier. Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two, three, four flat fish on each line. Fish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping, ping, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face. Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront. Southend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart. What are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. 14. I can't find any references to an attack on a British base. where do you find one?
  15. I found two Bolivian children's passports, pristine on the pavement in our suburban street. Concerned for the owners, I notified the police. They were rude and dismissive so I contacted the Bolivian Embassy who were helpful, grateful and keen to have them back.
  16. It's wood so you can compost it. Probably best to use it like grass cuttings sprinkled into other stuff to let in air and water.
  17. Could you give the news source so that I can see whether it is reliable (like BBC) or nuts ( like Reform conspiracy insights)?
  18. Makes me wish I had gone.
  19. Councils are not private companies though they can set them up. Do you have any evidence that Southwark has done this?
  20. I caught the 363 to CP and back on Saturday. I was worried that it would take ages but no, everything was fine. TfL don't seem to be organising diversions so maybe that's why
  21. you could investigate selling it. No Ulez outside London. Buses and trains? If you are that old you must have a Freedom Pass
  22. That's great. Queen's Rd Peckham otherwise the closest with lift access
  23. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/14349080 Doesn't add much. No accounts. Possibly genuine. Possibly the hard-done-to veterans are themselves
  24. "share" meaning tell someone "reach out" meaning tell someone. I'm sure someone has mentioned those before. Maybe me
  25. it isn't said on any news source that I look at. Are you asking on social media whether what you read on other social media is true?
