  1. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link below. On the 20th Sept have 2 rides arranged. Bruce is leading a shortish, very easy ride showcasing the Lovely Waterlink Way while Jamie is heading to the Thames to follow the Great River Race. Ride 1. Peckham to Waterlink Way and Cutty Sark < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-waterlink-way-and-cutty-sark-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1704421252849?aff=oddtdtcreator > 13 mile easy cycling route. Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, Peckham Library). Meet 10am, back by 1pm. Ride to Ladywell Fields, then up and down Waterlink Way. This is one of the nicest off-road paths in London, about 1.2 miles. Then National Route 21 via Brookmill Park to Cutty Sark. Final leg back to Peckham via Folkstone Gardens and Bridgehouse Meadows. Easy ride. Bit of uphill at start then downhill or flat. Lots of off road or cycle lane. Good ride for less confident cyclists – and a coffee stop at Ladywell Fields (Good Hope Café). Bruce leading. Report from 2024 ride https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2024/ride-reports-31st-august-2024/. Google map of route: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1evRH6uw3lByyIjmMxnVsEyyMoSMp27g&usp=sharing. Ride 2. The Great River Race by Bike! < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-great-river-race-by-bike-tickets-1706854871869?aff=oddtdtcreator > The aim is to follow the Great River Race from start to finish. Around 300 human-powered craft take part in this race every year, craft of all shapes and sizes heading up with the tide from Millwall Slip to Ham, a bit from Richmond. We will start from Canada Water (next to Canada Water Library, opposite Canada Water Station) at 10am with Cap’n Jamie in charge. Ride first to a good point near South Dock to watch the first boats start. Then ride upstream stopping at several points. We hope to reach Richmond, near the finish, by 2pm. Please note this is a very approximate finish time. Do not come on this ride if you need to be finished promptly. We will guide riders to Richmond Station to get transport back. It may well be a bit chaotic but will be fun. Route is 21 miles, so be prepared. Check and lube your bike, bring water, snacks, suitable clothing, spare inner tube etc. At present the forecast is dry. So “Hoo-ray and up she rises” off we go! These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

  4. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link below. On the 13h Sept have just one ride arranged at present with a 9am start. We expect to post a second ride by Tues 9th. Ride for Sept 13th. The Full Wandle < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-full-wandle-trail-cycle-ride-tickets-1671881375199?aff=oddtdtcreator > This ride is a nice challenge. Rride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from London Bridge (Southwark Needle, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train. This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. Route outline. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo. Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames. Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill, Morden Hall Park, Carshalton Ponds and Beddington Park. 14. Pleasant and honest. In East Dulwich. I have already got Dexter's in Nunhead on my list. Rude remarks also gratefully received
  15. NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below. Do not turn up for rides if you have not been able to register. The number limit is defined in our Rusk Assessment for Healthy Rides. If a serious injury occurred on a ride and we were found not to have conformed to our RA then London Cycling Campaign, our parent organisation, could be liable for damages that could bankrupt LCC. So please only attend rides for which you have registered on Eventbrite. On the 16rh August we have two rides, both popular routes we ride most years. One is a longish ride to Kensington Palace led by Amanda. The other short ride led by Bruce will go looking for butterflies to coincide with the national Big Butterfly Count. Ride 1. Easy ride with plenty of time allowed for hunting for butterflies. Route at http://goo.gl/v14knG . Deliberately making this s short ride with no coffee break. This was our default format for years and will still suit some riders. I will be getting a coffee at the finish if anyone wants to join me and chat before heading home. We are trying again with Amanda’s Cody Dock ride that was cancelled 2 weeks back due to an Amber weather warning. The second ride will be a new one, Owen continuing his campaign to get us out into Essex. Aug 02, Ride 1. Cutty Sark to Cody Dock. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-1526644116649?aff=oddtdtcreator > Please note. Electric bikes are not allowed on the cable car. Outward will go to the Cable Car at the O2 via the Thames path, then fly across the river and head for Cody Dock. Return will be via the free Woolwich Ferry followed by the Thames path back to Greenwich. If short of time will return via Isle of Dogs and use DLR from Mudchute to cross the river. Bring Travel Card etc. for the Cable car (full fare is £7). Aim is to be back by 1.30pm. Aug 02, Ride 2. Upminster to Southend. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator > The ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Hills country park at One Tree Hill for toilets and a coffee truck. Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café. At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break. Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes. The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at The Doorstep Cafe, The Knares, in Basildon. We'll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. Upminster station is step free. In Zone 6, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument, 42min, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St, 22min, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station, mostly along busy Station Road. Personal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen I remember as a 9 year old boy, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter's night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour, a keen fisherman, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier. Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two, three, four flat fish on each line. Fish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping, ping, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face. Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront. Southend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart. What are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. 25. The Whitstable Awayday on the 26th is full with 6 on the Wait List. But all is not lost there is a second rideon the 26th. It's the Thames Loop Cycle Ride from Canada Water. Always something new to see on this favourite short anti-clockwise loop that follows the Thames on both banks. An easy 11 mile ride we use DLR to cross river at Greenwich (travel pass or equivalent needed) and return over London Bridge. Meet up 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station and next to Canada Water Library. Route includes Russia Woodland, Deptford Historic Waterfront, Shadwell Basin and canal-side paths to St Katherines Dock. Coffee stop on return leg. No hills, mostly off road, cycle lanes or quiet streets. Simon K. leading. It will be possible to join the ride at Greenwich Station. Meet 10.25am outside the front of the station on Greenwich High Rd, near the Novotel (not by the DLR entrance). Please indicate on the registration form whether you will be joining at Greenwich. We last did this ride on a very cold day in January (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-report-11th-jan-2025/; should be rather warner on the 26th. Map of probable route here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1YputxtQpk_g_BVhieMCuf9HAtWs&usp=sharing Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.
