  1. Harradines of Peckham were fine. Couple of marks on a unit, but careful otherwise. Friendly lads. Ended up having a pint with them up at Liquorice afterwards!(They had by then finished for the day, if their bosses are reading)
  2. I read your subject line expecting a story about some bargains at Sainsbury's!
  3. The US stop sign system works well too. Again, eye contact helps the traffic flow safely. But that, like the US turn-right-at-a-red-if-clear system would be just too simple to consider.

  5. Actually I meant Lycott GROVE!
  6. Baker Street.
  7. The Lycott Road blast damage shot is interesting. There is a block of '50s/'60s maisonettes there now.
  8. 1000GBP says they'll still be there after the works are done.
  9. ED Stag: Ingredients: some blokes, a football, some money, a house to get showered and changed in, some pubs, a restaurant. 1200 Meet up at Clockhouse wearing fooball kit. Swift half and light bite. 1330 Decamp to Peckham Rye park for 5-side tournament or similar. 1600 Back to local lad's house to shower and change into evening kit. Optional pint on the way. 1730 Meet back up at Bishop (to get a booth or two) drink some Peroni. 1930 Arrive at Curry Cabin or similar group-friendly establishment. Eat dinner. Made that up. 0001 Stumble home
  10. Generally, 'consultation' means 'we're going ahead anyway but we have to pretend that this is a democratic process'. However, a friend of mine in Kingston, when faced with the prospect of an unecessary traffic calming system in his quiet cul-de-sac, rounded up his neigbours and and went along to the consultation meeting mob-handed. The councillors weren't expecting such resistance and relented.
  11. The so-called Bomb Maps were available in a huge reference book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/London-County-Council-Damage-1939-45/dp/0902087517/ref=sr_1_1/203-4831955-9863918?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188894260&sr=8-1 It's out of print now, but the originals are in the National Archives at Kew. The V1/V2 website is excellent, with good stories, as are the various East Dulwich books at the library. Dulwich got a hammering as the govt. put out disinformation that the war cabinet had decamped to somewhere in SE21.
  12. That would be far too pro-active and co-ordinated for TfL/Streets and Southwark.
  13. LuvPeckham is right. And everyman, call me a cynic, but that speed camera is placed where it will trap the most motorists, rather than curtail the speed of vehicles approaching the shops and junction at Colyton Rd. (
  14. "Secondy, law in Holland states that if a car collides with a cyclist, then irrespective of who actually caused the accident, the car driver is automatically deemed to be at fault. Maybe something this country should consider...." I assume you're joking. Cue an influx of hit-and-runs; fake, staged 'accidents' and red lights ignored.
  15. I'm with Louisa on that - anything is better than that brick front. Will someone start on that KCH building opposite now?
  16. Traffic lights used to be positioned for safety reasons; more and more, they seem to be placed purely for traffic control. It's no wonder drivers see them as an obstacle rather than a driving aid and avoid stopping.
  17. Some fine comments here. The no-road markings/traffic lights/signage experiment hails from the Netherlands, of course, where they've had great success with similar schemes. Everyone: motorist, pedestrian, cyclist, stays on the move, albeit with a bit of consideration for one another. There is no more of the cork-from-a-champagne-bottle dashes from traffic lights brought on by unecessary red signals, as noted by *bob*. Get emailing!
  18. Like most traffic lights, there is no need for them. Has anyone ever noticed that traffic runs more smoothly and motorists drive more carefully, using eye contact, when traffic lights are broken?
  19. It's not a bad gym, even though their plasma TVs were nicked recently. Could do with a makeover though. It'd be nice to see the Victorian pool restored to its former glory.
  20. Ace! 'The Shard' looks good too.

Technically, you would be in Harlem.
  22. Mr Liu's in the winter (especially for the lotus leaf special fried rice); Chopsticks garden in the summer.
  23. In NY parlance it's at Lordship & Bassano, Midtown; AKA the Franklins Quarter.
