  1. As much as I hate Murdoch and his bunch, I have to say Sky+ will change the way you watch TV. It frees up more time to do other, more useful, things.
  2. What a bang-on idea. I'll be watching for finger-licking though.
  3. No offence, Marmalade; I mean that truly :)
  4. Marmalade, I'm not insulting your home, I'm offering a critique of the building it's located in. Don't take it so personally, it's just bricks and mortar. And I am entitled, on this site, to offer an opinion on anything in East Dulwich with affects my living here. And that block - which includes the Victorian shop that houses Winkworth, the 70s unit that houses Budgens and the windowless substation on Northcross Road - is not something I like.
  5. Sorry, that block's is a blot on the ED landscape. I'm sure they're lovely and spacious inside, but it's a depressing eyesore. As bad as the police station. And I'm not wishing for a chintzy Victorian pastiche in its place, as that would be worse. I'd just like to see a well-thought out, well-designed, modern arcade like the one containing Sainsbury's in Forest Hill.
  6. The problem isn't to do with the content of the store, not who will or will not shop there. The problem is that it will open the floodgates to every other 100+ stores chains. Do we really want a LL packed with the likes of Snappy Snaps, Superdrug, Carphone Warehouse, Hallmark Cards or KFC?
  7. No big chains, please. We don't want Streatham High Road.

That row of shops > I probably frequent more than any other in ED, > especially in recent years! Sure, the amount of people hitting 40 is rising. I'll be one of them in five years (does that make me a younger person?) But when I do, I won't suddenly wake up on my 40th and think "oh no, this internet banking thing is just TOO convenient, I must go back to queueing outside my local branch in the rain, waiting for it to open at 9am, then queueing again while a single cashier miserably and manually processes cheques and banker's drafts. Neither will the millions of others who have embraced the digital age, and they're not all under 40s. Expect NatWest's publicity exercise to be rolled back in a few years' time.
  9. They to get away now and again, for a dirty weekend.

In the case of apartment blocks, the Government requirement is actually to provide only parking for around 60% of the block, to discourage car use. Which means that motorists just park on neighbourhood roads. Clever.
  11. Ditto with a housemate in the Camberwell New Road, circa 1994.
  12. I'm told by Mrs Kford that MkOne is a cheap and cheerful clothing chain, like Primark, but not cool. Website: http://www.mkone.co.uk/students.html
  13. I hope that that whole ugly block is demolished, but that won't happen soon. And I find it a bit strange that NatWest are opening branches, when there's a generation of people emerging now who do their banking entirely online or by phone. I can't remember the last time I went into a bank.
  14. That would be ?18.17 a session for me then.
  15. What was the 'old ED way of life', anyway? As I remember (not so long ago) it was infamous for scruffy pubs full of wheezing old drunks and dossers; tatty, understocked shops (Unwins?); an overpriced glaziers; rubbish dining and genuinely unruly kids in pushchairs. I think I prefer this way, thank you.
  16. Oh, and they tend to tow first the vehicles whose owners look like they can afford the release fee. I once saw a clapped-out old Saab parked in Southwark left just ticketed while other, newer, vehicles were removed. The Saab was left for weeks gathering dust.

  19. And why do people speed in built up areas? Because they perceive that they've been delayed (by new traffic lights, perhaps) and have to make up lost time. It's the so-called champagne cork effect.
  20. M&S if in town; PO on LL otherwise. You might have to order exotic stuff like Egyption pounds though.
  21. Coppers are only exempt from the highway code when on a call, i.e. with their blues & twos on. Otherwise they have to adhere to the same rules as us. Except they don't.
  22. Concorde was always at around 5 and then again at around 6.30 as I remember.
  23. Simon M is on the money with that one. I've never known lights to installed and then removed. It goes against the general ant-car policy of local councils (even though poorly sited lights affect badly bus traffic).
  24. Very good point. I know that they have to have their cap (and not their helmet) on when issuing a PCN. Worth snapping them on your phone or with a digital camera for any appeals. And as long as the ticket isn't issued (placed on) the vehicle, it's not valid under the 'the offence did not take place' caveat.
