  1. "unless a case is made for their retention" These lights will be kept, mark my words.
  2. No CPZ. They are nothing to do with parking in this city and everything to do with making money.
  3. But not if the local traders run a fleet of vehicles which they store on residents' streets. That's unfair and affects everyone, regardless of how they get about.
  4. Don't wish for permits - you'll regret it. You can have as many as you like anyway, if the vehicle is registered at that address. And when permit bays are painted in, they never leave as many spaces as were there before. Plus the added hassles of having to have a book of visitor passes (5GBP-10GBP a pop) for tradesmen and relatives. Plus, permits are not effectve on the weekend when most parking congestion occurs from shoppers. Unless, like in Australia, the permits issued free only to residents of a particular street, but that would never, ever happen over here - too sensible.
  5. Plough DIY - good people.
  6. I noticed aircraft this morning. Strange. It was a higher pitched drone, usually found on 757s and some Airbus. Don't notice earlier flights ordinarily because they're mostly deeper sounding 747s or A340s from the states, far east or down under.
  7. Green & Blue has an interesting selection.
  8. Hence all the concrete-tiled rooves, pebbledash and metal framed or non-standard windows in the area, especially in the shops opposite the Co-op block on LL.
  9. What about Hansler? I've heard it's just another version of Henslowe, but I'm not convinced.
  10. Harradines of Peckham were fine. Couple of marks on a unit, but careful otherwise. Friendly lads. Ended up having a pint with them up at Liquorice afterwards!(They had by then finished for the day, if their bosses are reading)
  11. I read your subject line expecting a story about some bargains at Sainsbury's!
  12. The US stop sign system works well too. Again, eye contact helps the traffic flow safely. But that, like the US turn-right-at-a-red-if-clear system would be just too simple to consider.

  14. Actually I meant Lycott GROVE!
  15. Baker Street.
  16. The Lycott Road blast damage shot is interesting. There is a block of '50s/'60s maisonettes there now.
  17. 1000GBP says they'll still be there after the works are done.
  18. ED Stag: Ingredients: some blokes, a football, some money, a house to get showered and changed in, some pubs, a restaurant. 1200 Meet up at Clockhouse wearing fooball kit. Swift half and light bite. 1330 Decamp to Peckham Rye park for 5-side tournament or similar. 1600 Back to local lad's house to shower and change into evening kit. Optional pint on the way. 1730 Meet back up at Bishop (to get a booth or two) drink some Peroni. 1930 Arrive at Curry Cabin or similar group-friendly establishment. Eat dinner. Drink Cobra. 2130 EDT, on the benches outside (weather permitting) for passing ladies etc 0000 Visit Venus lapdancing bar, Dulwich Village, next to the Greyhound. Sorry. Made that up. 0001 Stumble home
  19. Generally, 'consultation' means 'we're going ahead anyway but we have to pretend that this is a democratic process'. However, a friend of mine in Kingston, when faced with the prospect of an unecessary traffic calming system in his quiet cul-de-sac, rounded up his neigbours and and went along to the consultation meeting mob-handed. The councillors weren't expecting such resistance and relented.
  20. The so-called Bomb Maps were available in a huge reference book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/London-County-Council-Damage-1939-45/dp/0902087517/ref=sr_1_1/203-4831955-9863918?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188894260&sr=8-1 It's out of print now, but the originals are in the National Archives at Kew. The V1/V2 website is excellent, with good stories, as are the various East Dulwich books at the library. Dulwich got a hammering as the govt. put out disinformation that the war cabinet had decamped to somewhere in SE21.
  21. That would be far too pro-active and co-ordinated for TfL/Streets and Southwark.
  22. LuvPeckham is right. And everyman, call me a cynic, but that speed camera is placed where it will trap the most motorists, rather than curtail the speed of vehicles approaching the shops and junction at Colyton Rd. (
  23. "Secondy, law in Holland states that if a car collides with a cyclist, then irrespective of who actually caused the accident, the car driver is automatically deemed to be at fault. Maybe something this country should consider...." I assume you're joking. Cue an influx of hit-and-runs; fake, staged 'accidents' and red lights ignored.
