I absolutely agree with all that DG2, and also think it a terrible shame that the USA on the other hand are showing nothing (and Canada too I believe). I also think that the biggest legacy from any aspect of the games will be the good it does for changing attitudes to the disabled. Just as I went to my first Olympic event I will be going to my first paralympic events this week. More importantly I will be seeing sports I have never been to see and in two cases, sports I've never seen before. In that context you are right, the standard of anything C4 do doesn't really matter. And I'd also say that you can't put a price on what that that means for the image of the disabled either......and I'd be the first to say that my previously negative attitude to the cost of it all has now been reversed.

Gay marriage? Let's have a referendum
DJKillaQueen replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well then why meddle with anything? Why did we even bother on the road to equal rights in the first place? By your agrument, South Africa should have retained an aparthied, or the USA segregation......changing anything has consequences. There is absolutely no argument for suggesting the church or any institution should value homosexual couples differently. You know that as well as I do. Your continuos notion that somehow extending an equality by the church to gay couples will lead to negative consequences that will destroy anything but the prejudice of the church is ludicrous. It's a view purley based on homophobic prejudice (and an idea that homosexuality is immoral) and has no place in any institution in this country. Now if you have a valid argument for retaining that prejudice then let's hear it, but so far you have offerend none. -
Simon Philips at Sothwark is the genius responsible for delivering it. Most of the cyclists using it I think are those also using the old canal route (that's when I use it). The added problem is cyclists jumping up from behind buses they can't overtake on the road.....another genius idea?!!!!!!! I also spoke directly to Mr Philips about the plans for the pavement cycle path further south (just before the Rye Hotel) before that happened too, pointing out the danger to cyclists continuing along Peckham Rye from cars turning left as previously there had been a painted cycle lane on the road that fed off left only, meaning many cars thought any cyclist using it was turning left!!!! On that occasion he listened to the suggestions of those consulting (including predestrians and drivers) and some changes were made from the original plans. In that example a pavement cycle lane for those going left works better (no more confusion for other vehicle drivers) and there are far less people to worry about, but again the slightly darker shade of grey remained. I think it's a desgin that works well in less populated sections but completely fails in heavy usage parts. This in my view is what the planning and design team have failed to understand.

I agree North Londoner, and I think C4's lack of experience of covering live events is obvious to see. I was very disappointed to see adverts puntuating the opening ceremony for example. I do not think ITV would have done that. It's an odd one because many of the staff actually at the events, both technical and commentary are the same staff employed by the BBC and other channels to film and commentate on major sporting events. It's just the delivery of that from C4 itself that is poor.

I second the buying online thing. I think alot of pet owners have been caught out. This really has been an avalanche of fleas. Most times just treating the pets is enough to keep them at bay (and why waste houshold spray when there's no need to) but this summer that's not been enough. The good news though is that it's fairly easy to get rid of the damn pests once the full force military treatment is done :)

Rubbish. Drama queen indeed as Otta says. I suspect, like the most zealous of campaigners, you'll never be happy DJ. The pub will not be expected to stop people going outside to smoke, and those people will chatter, and neither the police nor the licensing committee will be interested when you try to claim that (as no doubt you will) to be a breach of licence. Every single poster on this thread had held the view that an extended licence at weekends was not sensible in a residential area. And the licensing committee agreed with that sensible view. That should be the end of the matter.

The Tony Nicklinson case - where now?
DJKillaQueen replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Good post Burbage, and you hit on a point not really talked about, and that is of course the depression and mental suffering of those trapped by their condition. It is that which leads to the request for assisted suicide and it's ironic in some respects because of all the reasons offered for suicide, it is perhaps the easiest and most straightforward to understand. When an able bodied person commits suicide, we constantly see blatent examples of the level of poor understanding of depression that the press, authorities and general public have in this country. Many times we see along with the reporting of a suicide, a list of all the things a person had, family, good job, etc or alternately things they didn't have, financial problems (so not enough money) or bereavement etc. We seek explanations outside of the mental health of the person when any explanation can only be found within the mental chemistry and the thoughts of the person themself. External experiences or environments can be a trigger for mental health issues, but often are not. In this light, what chance have the disabled got of being understood too? We know people react differently to a similar set of situations and yet many still can't understand that in the minds of some people, an unbearably painful and negative storm is brewing. And many people confuse having known a sufferer of depression or even sadly a suicide victim for having an understanding of depression too. Association is not the same as understanding. I've seen ignorance on this issue from most non sufferers I've ever discussed it with, irregardless of whether they know sufferers themselves. In other words, it is ignorance that is currently shaping the general view on depression. The Tony Nicklinson case is only the tip of the iceberg. The real issue I feel is that there needs to be a complete overhual of the attitude towards those who suffer from mental health issues and it needs to start from the top. We are very good at making people cancer aware and encouraging them to have preventative check ups. We need to take away the stigma of mental health by making people equally able to seek help if they feel they need it, and for that experience to always be a positive one. However, given the current governments dismissal of mental health issues as even being a disability (as seen through the current welfare reform re-assessments) I don't expect any movement forward any time soon. The same process is displaying a pretty poor attitude towards physical disability too. To follow from Burbage's point that it is a disability rights issue. I wholeheartedly agree, and as with all rights issues, the people best qualfied to know what they need and what will work best for them are those affected directly. They need to be listened to. -
Gay marriage? Let's have a referendum

Well said H. We've seen this before, whereby those who feel threatened by homosexuality seek to demonise it further by, for example, talking about rapists and peadophiles in the same sentence, as though homosexuality has anything to do with either of those things. It's simply a tactic designed to deliberatly create fear in people by linking the idea of equality with something universally accepted as immoral, criminal, bad etc. So H is spot on SF with regards to your previous point. It is simply an illustration of your own thinking, that homosexuality is immoral and therefore akin to other things you consider to be immoral, like polygamy. I find your view quite insulting personally. -
I did raise the matter of the pavement cycle lane at the time of construction with the relevant person at Southwark. His view was that neither pedestrian or cyclist have right of way and that it is designed to force shared, considerate use. I totally agree though that for many cyclists it's a pain in the ass, including the cycle traffic light at the end of the cycle lane that never works. I too have collided with pedestrians that suddenly moved accross in front of me leaving me no time to brake.

What are you talking about now? You were sucessful in forcing the withdrawal of the application for variation of opening hours. I think TGE have done enough to appease by that withdrawal. It is not sneaky to apply for variation of a licence. The process allows for consultation and objection.....so very unfair to call a business sneaky for making an application. Businesses make applications for variations of licence all the time. They are not required to carry out their own consultation before doing so...and why should they when the application process itself allows for consultation. I do think you are like a dog with a bone here DJS. You've won, but it doesn't seem to be enough for you.

Hear we go again....giving any kind of equal treatment to gay couples will lead to the destruction of all common sense?....change the record silverfox.......there is NO excuse either religious or otherwise for protecting the prejudice of some religious leaders and those that follow their warped ideology...end of. -
Common sense says that smokers will still have to go outside to smoke whatever the hour and any establishment can not control every aspect of chatter between people. As someone that has had to deal with Police after a 101 call about noise only to have the police tell me they actually didn't think it was a warranted call when they got there.....bear in mind that 101 is a police line and police do not carry out a role of enforcing licensing, nor dealing with minor noise issues, unless there is a serious incident or disturbance.

The Tony Nicklinson case - where now?

'Science, research and medical care now make it very probable that the majority will survive into late old age, but living with increasing infirmity. This Faustian pact leads to increasing indignity, pain and despair for many many people.' This comment is absolutely true and poignant. And it also the reason why conditions like dementia are now more prevalent. There's something illogical to me about keeping people alive long enough to only then have a miserable demise. -

Yes that's a concern but it also concerns me that we leave people to die slow and painful deaths who would rather have a quick and painless ending. As for taking a trip to switzerland, not a cheap option for the disabled and I think he wanted to die at home, not in some strange swiss clinic. I totally get the motive behind his protest. We talk all the time about dignity but yet deny dignity to those living with terminal illness or overwhelming disability. As any one having to care for someone in those conditions knows, it can be a painfully depressing existance for some of those afflicted. Yes the line between willing euthansia and murder has to be guarded but doctors already do overdose patients who are hours from death, out of humanity. -
I once saw a drain clearing lorry being ticketted because it was on double yellow lines, because that is the only place it could park to access the drain the lorry needed to clear (i.e a big suction tube went from the drain to the tank on the back of the lorry). Parking wardens do make stupid calls sometimes.

I don't have any carpets (sanded floorboards) but you can get bitten just from having an infested pet sitting on your lap. I had no idea that frontline had become immune (so will take the advice of this thread and switch to advocate) but have always found staykill to be pretty reliable for soft furnishings etc.
-
I've used staykill spray around the home for 20 years and have neever seen any adverse affects. Obviously while you spray a room you keep pets out and keep the room free of pets for about an hour. After that it's perfectly fine.

That's useful info PSD. Never considered using a flea trap before but may give it a go.

And also, it is part of the natural evolution of anywhere for change to happen. If you look at the social history of say the past 150 years (or since the advent of the industrial revolution) streets, towns, cities, regions etc have gone through cycles lasting 20-30 years or so. I would argue that in the sftermath of the devastation of WWII, an effort was made to stabilise everything, in the idea that a fresh start meant being able to create a new utopia (part of which was jobs for life, guaranteed pensions), the perfect society where all can be taken care of whilst others prosper. It was always going to be a tall order, and perhaps all that has really happened is that we've sunk back into the natural order of things (from a captalist economic perspective).
