Given that it's ritten by JB on his website I think I'd like to hear the other side before making comment. Anyone know why the display will be called 'The Colour Thief'?

Free schools - the more the merrier
DJKillaQueen replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Is there anything free about a school that has a religious doctrine at the core of it's identity? -
No results post 2001 though and all that matters is the quality of the two teams on the day. The optimist in me assumes DH have improved enough in the past ten years to grab a win :)

psml......you are just trying to provoke now. I'm not rising to it.... I've been cycling in London for 25 years....I've had three accidents. Two were the faults of drivers turning left and driving over me. One was the result of mechanical failure on my bicycle. I'd say I'm a very safe cyclist on that record...

Very sorry to hear this has happened to you ciare and I can understand your fear. Your Housing Officer should at the very least, open a case for you and look at whether your neighbour upstairs is in breach of his tenancy agreement. If he has a mental health condition that precipitated the attack, then things become more complex. Eviction as a process takes months but they could move him. Alternatively they could move you. The Police Officer dealing with your case should be able to give you an update of whether your neigbour is still in care/ custody and as to whether he has been or will be charged. If he returns to his flat and threatens or harasses you, then you could also use the legal process to gain an injuction against your neighbour. This would force the council to take action too. If you have a local residents association, go and speak with them. Someone there will have the ear of your local councillors, housing officer and other officials and will be able to get your worries taken seriously.

St Thomas More Hall closing
DJKillaQueen replied to IrishDancer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I run a Tenants Hall (which is in essence a Community Hall owned by the council but it's our responsibilty to fund and run it - we pay rent for example). A colleague of mine involved with my Tenants Hall is also involved with St Thomas's which is a Church run hall. With my Tenants Hall, no-one bank rolled the losses.....it just ate into the bank balance year on year. The Hall wasn't always loss making, but had become so several years back (for the same reasons a lot of working men's clubs have gone downhill). I just happened to come in time to get things turned around. I did an audit etc and went from there. -
But not to an extent that it interefers with my ability to cycle safely...that's the point of the discussion. I can hear less from inside in a car without the radio on....so eyes and mirrors are everything, just as they are on a motorbike. Why would a cyclist be deemed to need more use of hearing than drivers? Deaf and hard of hearing people cycle, do they not? Are they stupid for even daring to get on a cycle?
-
Now why would I cycle blindfolded?....that would be stupid.... I like the beer analogy although it doesn't quite work because beer psysically and metally inhibits, headphones don't.

St Thomas More Hall closing
DJKillaQueen replied to IrishDancer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When I joined my Tenants Association it was losing money every year, to the tune of ?4k and it was five months away from going bankrupt. One of the first things to do was to look at this, and address it. We didn't close the hall, until we could find something that made enough money. We looked at existing revenue streams and activities and pricing, corrected the balance between those activities that bring in revenue and those that are funded. We improved efficiency in overheads, cut out wastage. We did it all with sensitivity towards those that were using the hall, so making sure we kept some core groups, activities in place and then from there brought in new things, attracting new groups of the local community. It can be done but it takes work. FG and the diocese haven't just decided to close the hall, they've decided to remove/ sell off the bar and sell off furniture....having decided none of this will have any role in the future use of the Hall (odd thing to do if no future use has yet been determined). From what my colleague has told me (she's been involved with St Thomas's for 30 years) and from my own experience of running a community hall, I find the decision to shut everything down in the way it has been a bit odd. Empty buildings still require expenditure and as pointed out by others, if the plan is to have a nursery, that needn't necessarily interfere with evening use of the Hall. My instincts tell me (and I will happily aknowledge I may be wrong) that there is a bit of 'something for an easy life' going on. The diocese faced with loss making, are looking for a single use profit making venture - and whilst it may not be greedy, it is lazy. Just my view though. -
Like I said, it's different for different people. Headphones inhibit your awareness but they don't mine....it is not fair to call all cyclists who do use headphones 'stupid' and I can't see anything in this thread from anyone that would make a driver dispair of cyclists either.

I have mirrors on my bicycle handlebars and recommend them. You can hear emergency vehicles through headphones, just as you can hear emergency vehicles over a car or motorcycle engine or through a crash helmet. Sirens are designed to be louder than most noise. At the end of the day it's up to the individual to do what makes them feel safest. Some people are more easily distracted than others just as some are more able to be focused on more things than others. Speaking from experince, I am more likely to have an accident on my cycle because a car driver isn't looking for me than as a result of wearing headphones.
-
There is no evidence. The claim was made by the president of the AA but was later rescinded to that of any road user being distracted. At the end of last year, the president of the motoring organisation the AA, Edmund King called for a campaign warning riders not to listen to iPods or personal stereos whilst they are cycling. His comments featured in the Times newspaper, alongside warnings that earphones were one of the factors behind a rise in the number of cyclists being injured on the roads, or colliding with (and injuring) pedestrians. The AA later qualified these remarks made by its President as a more general attack on road users who don?t pay enough attention to what is going on around them. The distraction doesn?t necessarily have to be music through your headphones; crossing the road whilst wearing a hood was also mentioned as increasing your risk of being involved in an accident, as was using a mobile phone whilst driving ? something which has been illegal in the UK since December 2003. Wearing headphones, listening to a car stereo or wearing a full face crash helmet (through which you can hear nothing) doesn't cause an accident. Poor attention to what is going on around you does.....
-
Where's the evidence of that? I can listen to headphones at a safe volume and cycle perfectly safely....done it for 20+ years without any accident that was my fault. A cyclist has a far greater chance of injury because they are on a cycle, that's all.
-
Why is wearing headphones any different to a driver listening to a radio or CD? Even when not listening to the radio, most of what I can hear in my car is my own engine!

I don't think the intent was to bask in glory. It was a period of rememberance for the tenth anniversary. I think the intent was simply to make a connection to that rememberance. I really don't think anything more inciped was behind it.

Wow.... they are having a good start. Let's hope they stay injury free and can keep it up.

Ah ok...I'll go have a look ;)

That is my fav post of the week maxxi! Brilliant :) *And remember, if you want to see maxxi next week, you'll need to pick up your phone and vote*

So what was the answer?......please put me out of my misery!!!

Wow that bad. The atmosphere was good as always at the Den (and there was no trouble like two years ago). I thought Millwall played really well in the first half but tailed off in the middle of the second of course. 7 points from 7 games though is a bit disappointing......it was the first points West Ham have dropped so far.

Well....I think the panel seem to be a lot better.....and liking Gary Barlow very much (he is way too good looking). They seem to be only putting through people who can on the whole sing though (which makes a change). Will be interesting to see what they are like at the mentoring stage. I think Kelly Rowland is going to be really good. She'll make them work hard.
