Rodney Bewes, you are even wittier than your "Likely Lads" namesake. No, I didn't have my leg amputated and my world didn't collapse. But you've missed the point. My main complaint is that the mother didn't apologise for what had happened; when my kids were young 25 years ago I would have been most apologetic if something similar had happened. If you think that the mother's attitude was fine, then your moral values are different from mine.

On the subject of these scooters, I was about to cross at the Plough lights the other day when a kid of about six nearly crashed into me. The yummy mummy mother didn't even apologise. I said "These bloody cycles ought to be banned!" to which she replied in best Violet Elizabeth Bott tones "Ooh, you're such a rude man!" The sense of entitlement of some of these people is amazing. She clearly thinks that people of retirement age such as me should jump out of the way so that her little darlings can speed ad lib along what is a pavement meant for pedestrians. No attempt to keep her kids under control.

There is another way in which Southwark are being very disingenuous. The officer response quoted by James Barber in his post earlier today includes the following: " .... In an ideal world, these elements (in the Traffic Management Oorder) would have been advertised, and any objections duly considered, prior to commencing the main works. However, due to the programme pressures of needing the works to be built in the school summer holidays, we have had to progress them in the way that we have." I think that I am correct in saying that the Cabinet member approved the scheme in April, i.e. over two months ago. This means that the TMO consultation could have started weeks ago and objections considered in good time for the works to commence.
-
James, unless I've totally missed the point, what the officers are saying in their response to you doesn't square with paragraphs 16-18 of the report to the March DCC meeting, which read as follows: "16. Informal public consultation was carried out in February 2015 / March 2015, as detailed above. 17. This report provides an opportunity for final comment to be made by the community council prior to a non-key decision scheduled to be taken by the cabinet member for Environment, Transport and Recycling following this community council meeting. 18. If approved for implementation this will be subject to statutory consultation required in the making of any permanent Traffic Management Orders. If any objections are received to that statutory consultation that cannot be informally resolved, a further decision by the cabinet member will be required to consider and determine those objections." As the report to the March DCC meeting makes clear, the public consultation that took place earlier this year was informal only. It would be illogical for consultation on the full proposals to be informal but the formal statutory consultation only to relate to minor issues such as waiting restrictions. At the very least, the officers are guilty of misleading Councillors and members of the public and therefore potentially vulonerable to an allegation of maladministration.

An email has gone to the Council Leader and all Councillors represented on the Dulwich Community Care Council, in essence saying that the Council should not implement the scheme until it has completed all the legal and statutory notices and duties for all aspects of the work, both temporary and permanent.

It's quite simple, Louisa. I was born in what was at the time part of Essex. I wasn't an Essex blow-in, blow-out, or indeed blow-off. And I'm one pound richer, because you've used the "blow-in" expression yet again. I love your expression "of ED heritage". Clearly an attempt to put yourself in the same class as people "of Afro-Caribbean heritage" or "of native American heritage", and by implication a member of a persecuted minority.
-
Poor, poor Louisa. You clearly are a victim of the most appalling anti ED heritage prejudice. I feel your pain. BTW, we have lived in ED since the beginning of 1987. Are we people with an ED heritage, or have we lived in the area for an insufficient time to qualify? I hate to admit it but I was originally an Essex man, heaven forfend!

If I had a pound for every time someone (usually Louisa) uses the word "blow-in" on EDF, I would be a millionaire. Frankly if Louisa confines herself to The Lounge, I would be very happy.

Was the traffic normal this morning to Elephant?
Zebedee Tring replied to damzel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
According to LBC radio this morning traffic was taking half an hour to travel along Walworth Road towards the Elephant because of the roadworks. Has this been happening every morning recently? If so, I shall find another way of getting to Covent Garden tomorrow morning. -
Thanks, lulu.

Where exactly in Sydenham Hill is there a delay? It's a long road.

The ants are my friends, they're blowing in the wind. There's a bathroom on the right (There's a bad moon on the rise) Deep, deep as the deepest sea is my sailor's love for me.

Agressive woman on lordship lane last weekend
Zebedee Tring replied to swedbuilder's topic in The Lounge
I find the patronising and condescending attitude of certain posters towards swedbuilder quite sickening and reminiscent of the "right on" and intolerant student unions of my youth. If they want to lecture people about what they consider to be their inappropriate use of language, perhaps they should go and address a meeting of BNP supporters. They should receive an interesting and full and frank response. -
I thought that Dildo was the title character in "The Hobbit" until I discovered Smirnoff.

Agressive woman on lordship lane last weekend
Zebedee Tring replied to swedbuilder's topic in The Lounge
Rather than competing on being as PC as possible and talking down to a man who has a wife who is a woman of colour (or whatever the current acceptable phrase is) and who doesn't therefore need a lecture on racial tolerance, it would be more useful if people could help him by commenting on what may have been an unprovoked assault and trying to identify the woman who assaulted his wife. -

Thanks, everybody. The 7.37 was crowded today at DH but we got seats at the Elephant. -
Thameslink from Denmark Hill

Many thanks, Steve. -
I'm thinking of getting a Thameslink train from Denmark Hill to St Pancras tomorrow at about 7.30am. A few months ago there were a number of posts complaining about how bad and overcrowded Thameslink services were, especially during the rush hour, but I haven't read any such posts recently. I'd be grateful if people could tell me whether the situation has improved on this service or whether it is still bad. Many thanks.
