  1. nicely said, cella, especially this bit "It's more significant I feel when, if gently corrected, the user makes a big issue out of it - speaks volumes." and pace RH's tutor, saying 'gentleman' doesn't imply that one's referring to a toff, any more than mealy-mouthedly referring to the 'lavatory' elevates the purpose of that facility.
  2. not offensive, just patronising, and also dated - it marks the user out as being of a certain age and mindset so s/he who springs to the defence of 'the ladies' can't, pretty much by definition, be taken seriously by 'the ladies', unless s/he pleads extreme age in his/her own defence just say 'women' - problem solved
  3. hi, robbin, where would you draw the line at offensiveness? if I replaced 'rats' in your last sentence with 'meerkats'/'gnus on the Serengeti'/'football supporters'/'hipsters in Shoreditch' all of which scuttle about in numbers and compete with each other for goodies (albeit of different kinds) would you still be offended by them?
  4. you don't need to apologise - completely understand (and sympathise with) your point. there's a lot of wannabe vigilantes on the EDF and we could do with a bit more compassion and understanding imho
  5. to be clear - if you had posted about the risk to children and dogs from bad driving in ED, or the pollution from school-run drivers in ED, or the broken glass on pavements near the multitude of pubs and restaurants in ED, or the easy availability of junk food (to children) or chicken bones and other litter (to dogs) in ED, i would have been delighted to join forces with you in bothering new councillor mcash complaining to the councillor about a rat on goose green - come on!
  6. i'd go with the advice from Sue and ilonaM - you're facing the same problem as 99% of ED gardens, including mine i think that all of the advice about the need for double-digging etc has been pretty much debunked in favour of (as the ladies say) just letting the worms do it for you
  7. to the OP, i occasionally walk a child and a dog on goose green and i would want to warn any rats that might find themselves in the vicinity of either
  8. woodrot - where's he? and whatever happened to gingerbeer?
  9. flocker spotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > rather dull and increasing up its own smug arsche ED. no self respecting rodent would be seen on LL these days ah, but you see, it wasn't LL - this particular rodent was quietly going about its business on GG

  11. urban village - a worthy successor to osbourne stewart, it would seem!

I've written to new councillor > McAsh hoping for some action really chuffed at the thought that new councillor McAsh's top priority for action would be catching rats on Goose Green. any other helpful suggestions to improve our local area? maybe councillor McAsh could also pick up after any local dogs with negligent owners in his spare time?

  14. hey you lot, tone it down i read the OP's post before it was taken down and i thought that she had every reason to believe that her family had been badly treated - she might not have been right about the reason why, but you don't know the truth of the matter either. whatever that was, it's distressing enough to think you're getting unfair treatment, when it not just you but your family also involved. so hold off on the ad hominem attacks and let's see if the pub can help set the record straight fwiw, OP, calling admin's actions 'tragic' is just a bit excessive
  15. petition against Network Rail tree felling here: https://www.change.org/p/network-rail-stop-network-rail-chopping-down-millions-of-trees
  16. i was pointing out to the OP that some so-called 'native' birds are actually migrants - unlike parakeets which are now a settled species in this country, (also grey squirrels, rabbits, chestnut trees, sycamores and any number of garden plants - all introduced, but now part of the 'native' furniture) in the process, i seem to have outed uncleglen as a peddler of fake news
  17. i do hope that you emphasise to your students the importance of digesting a source before quoting it, uncleG
  18. tomdhu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Blackbirds do not migrate. actually, they do not all of them, but many
  19. why are parakeets, which over-winter in this country, denounced as entitled foreign scum, while the smaller birds are referred to as 'natives'? many of whom are actually migrants e.g. blackbirds, fieldfares etc shades of birdy Windrush... inter-bird bullying is done by the pigeons and doves in our garden the poor smaller birds wait their turn, and then of course the squirrels turn up and jump the queue! I just cave in and put out more bird seed and suet...
  20. James - it seems that you've not been re-elected? If that's true, i am very sorry to hear that. ETA - wholeheartedly echo what Sue said. you will be missed.
  21. every time i see this thread i can't help but think of

  23. probably not, malumbu I wonder, did brockwellmummy realise, when she ventured into the Lounge, that life outside the family room can be red in tooth and claw (and presumably politics?)
  24. reasons why we love(d) Chener Books - they stocked the most amazing range of books outside of Piccadilly Waterstones - they wrote down a record of every book they ever sold, laboriously, in long-hand - they managed to run a bookshop with a leak in the roof - that's a bit like trying to run a fish and chip shop while managing a chip-pan fire - and they had no patience with people trying to return books (the idea! a book is for life, unless it's from the library) great to see that it will continue - but will John continue with it?
  25. hope you find his home soon - well done, anelia, for yet another animal rescue!
