State primary school transition to top private school
civilservant replied to brockwell_mummy's topic in The Lounge
probably not, malumbu I wonder, did brockwellmummy realise, when she ventured into the Lounge, that life outside the family room can be red in tooth and claw (and presumably politics?) -
reasons why we love(d) Chener Books - they stocked the most amazing range of books outside of Piccadilly Waterstones - they wrote down a record of every book they ever sold, laboriously, in long-hand - they managed to run a bookshop with a leak in the roof - that's a bit like trying to run a fish and chip shop while managing a chip-pan fire - and they had no patience with people trying to return books (the idea! a book is for life, unless it's from the library) great to see that it will continue - but will John continue with it?

SpringTime Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You can shoot them, gas them, use poison, trap > them or hound them down. They always come back. why would you want to do any of those things, springtime? especially as you know they'll always come back? as for the OP, suggest you try living near a pub with Sky sports - then you'll know what the worst noise is!

hi, Elphinstone's Army, life in the countryside IS red in tooth and claw and life in town can be as well I understand that you're not condoning any of the practices that you describe but stringvest posted about some completely gratuitous cruelty, and I am sure you agree that there was absolutely no reason for these kids to do what they were doing, and especially not for fun you might feel powerless to stop awful things happening around you, but that doesn't mean that everyone should 'myob' - that's the start of a very slippery slope, and who knows where it ends?

similar thing down North Cross Road on Saturday - A-boards squarely on the pedestrian part of the pavement. Thinking it would be churlish to nudge them back onto the retailers' forecourts, I wound my way around them along with the prams, the dogs and the couples introducing their parents-in-law to the delights of ED.

thanks for 'overinvolving' yourself, stringvest, and not just walking away. these kids were egging each other on to be cruel idiots and not taking responsibility for their actions. you were quite justified in making the poor darlings face up to the consequences of their behaviour.

Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
civilservant replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
it was helpful of James Barber to confirm that one of the main reasons for the overcrowding, and the associated risks to people using the station, was a planning decision by Southwark Council. The sensible solution would have been for the new stairs and ramps to allow passengers to enter or exit the station directly onto Champion Park or Windsor Walk. On the Champion Park side at least, this wouldn't need a massive amount of engineering. There is absolutely no point to the new structures otherwise. James, can you please tell us why the council say it couldn't be done? -
so pleased for both of you, stringvest

Dog barking on Blenheim grove
civilservant replied to Peckhamguy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
hi, Peckhamguy, are you serious? not joking I hope! I wonder what might have happened to the dog or dogs this just means that they'll disappear along with their dodgy security guys and who knows what happens to them? -
thanks for your PM, theron, and peckhamguy - i will keep on following up with the rspca and the police i note this from the rspca website: The RSPCA believes that the basic welfare of all animals must take into account the 'Five Welfare Needs'. These needs are: - somewhere suitable to live - a proper diet, including fresh water - the ability to express normal behaviour - for any need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals - protection from, and treatment of, illness and injury. for this dog or dogs, it does look like at least some of these welfare needs aren't being met and so a suitable case for the rspca to follow up.

I finally actually saw this dog for the first time today it is a German Shepherd cross in a rather bad way - its ribs are clearly visible, its fur is in very poor condition and its tail has been docked in some clumsy fashion I got to see it so well because it came up to the gate to look at me and allowed me to stroke its muzzle I doubt that it ever leaves the garage premises and I wonder whether it is even micro-chipped it is clearly NOT a registered guard dog, even though there is a sign on the garage to that effect I will be calling the RSPCA for the nth time and also following up with the police Could any forum readers who frequent Bar Story please help to ensure that this poor wretched animal has a better life??? ETA I have called the RSPCA who have promised to visit to check and have also emailed local Met police

Dog watering holes in Peckham Rye Park
civilservant replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
the stream used to be clear and clean at that place - dogs really enjoyed the water especially since access is easier than at the bridges it is one of the few places in the park where dogs don't have to compete with other park users, so a real pity that these contractors are using this as a dumping ground, possibly on account of it not being as visible as other parts of the park are the park keepers taking any notice? -
UPDATE FROM POLICE: Hi good morning to you, sorry for the late update. I did visit the garage twice now during day time last was yesterday. The guy I spoke to said the dog who is there during evenings/nights is kept inside and imagine only let out occasionally for fresh air etc?.. I was truthful and said we?d have members of the public contact us regarding the treatment, welfare of their dog/dogs being kept there evening periods especially during the very cold spell of weather. He has said he?ll pass that on to the guy who?s in charge evening times and I said I?ll be popping up next time I?m on late shift to see for myself how the dog is being cared and not simply left outside for hrs & hrs. In the future please continue letting me know if anything changes, something that really concerns you and we?ll take action. TO WHICH I REPLIED AS FOLLOWS: really appreciate your attention to this ? I expect that this is just one of the calls on your time! People have contacted me to say that the dog is heard barking a lot in the evenings. I?ve been going by the garage myself to check on the situation ? there doesn?t seem to be any sound in the mornings, but I hear the dog in the evenings. I?ve got a dog myself and I know that he?ll only bark (and keep barking) if he?s unhappy in some way. I understand that there are legal requirements on the treatment of any dog that is being used as a guard dog, and I am concerned that these are not being met. The fact is that public concern was expressed long before the bad weather, and just ramped up as a result of the snow. I'll keep you updated in case of concern - thanks again for your help

rch Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Any news?? i emailed the police at the weekend but no response, so detoured past the garage this morning on my way to the station. no barking, closed gates, a man sitting in a car behind the gates, a sign on the gates warning about guard dogs - that was all i'll continue to keep an ear and eye out, and i'll keep checking with the police as well however - this is a busy and well-frequented area. anyone walking between the station/Rye Lane and Bellenden/Choumert Grove passes these premises. Bar Story's next door; trendy hangouts like Brick House, Peckham Refreshment Rooms are all well within earshot of this garage if anyone hears sounds suggesting a stressed or unhappy dog, can you let this forum know, please?

Huge queues at Peckhamplex - allow wait time before your film
civilservant replied to flocker spotter's topic in The Lounge
arguably the Plex is the more authentic movie experience who remembers the late lamented Coronet at the Elephant? oh the sticky floor coverings, oh the smell of weed drifting up from the smokers in the front seats, oh the roar of audience approval every time Michael Douglas offed someone in Falling Down, oh the spooky back stairs that led into the dodgy back passages behind the Elephant! when Jurassic Park first came out, I joined the end of a queue that looped three times around the Michael Faraday monument! PictureHouse! nah! -

i like the Plex at least i don't fall asleep in there, like i do every time i've been in the ED picturehouse - i could do that at home any time without paying over ?10 for the privilege. although one reason for staying awake in the Plex is sheer irritation at the people sitting in front of me, who all seem to check their phones at 30-second intervals, crunch their popcorn, rustle their paper bags, and keep their stupid hats on in the cinema
