Turns out she had migraine aura, a type of migraine that can mimic symptoms of a stroke: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110218/ap_on_sc/us_tv_reporter_speech_problem "I knew something wasn't right as soon as I opened my mouth. I hadn't been feeling well a little bit before the live shot. I had a headache, my vision was very blurry. I knew something wasn't right, but I just thought I was tired. So when I opened my mouth, I thought, 'This is more than just being tired. Something is terribly wrong.' I wanted to say, 'Lady Antebellum swept the Grammys.' And I could think of the words, but I could not get them coming out properly."

See also: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/opinion/a-brave-new-world-of-fossil-fuels-on-demand/article1871149/ I predict nothing will come of this, too. I hope I'm proved wrong. :)

Interesting story here. However - my concern is, you get these amazing stories from time to time (e.g. cancer breakthroughs, a cure for AIDS), and then seemingly hear nothing about them ever again. That's what I predict will happen with this. It's like it's too good to be true. So, I remain worried about peak oil. The government would probably tax this fuel anyway, even if it does get developed, so prices will remain high. --- http://images.gizmag.com/hero/synthetic-gasoline-with-no-carbon-emissions.jpg Cella Energy CEO Stephen Voller exhibits his breakthrough technology - right shows the fuel's hydrogen microbeads under a microscope Breakthrough promises $1.50 per gallon synthetic gasoline with no carbon emissions By Mike Hanlon 05:26 January 26, 2011 UK-based Cella Energy has developed a synthetic fuel that could lead to US$1.50 per gallon gasoline. Apart from promising a future transportation fuel with a stable price regardless of oil prices, the fuel is hydrogen based and produces no carbon emissions when burned. The technology is based on complex hydrides, and has been developed over a four year top secret program at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. Early indications are that the fuel can be used in existing internal combustion engined vehicles without engine modification. According to Stephen Voller CEO at Cella Energy, the technology was developed using advanced materials science, taking high energy materials and encapsulating them using a nanostructuring technique called coaxial electrospraying. ?We have developed new micro-beads that can be used in an existing gasoline or petrol vehicle to replace oil-based fuels,? said Voller. ?Early indications are that the micro-beads can be used in existing vehicles without engine modification.? ?The materials are hydrogen-based, and so when used produce no carbon emissions at the point of use, in a similar way to electric vehicles?, said Voller. Just weeks after writing my blog, I've come across this amazing article... --- New machine converts plastics back to oil This may well be one of the most revolutionary machines to hit the market, although, in a way, it couldn?t be simpler. Plastic chokes everything. Our water ways, including the Mediterranean. Camels and other animals. And given that it is made from petroleum products, it is a drain on our energy sources. A Japanese man concerned about the environment his children have inherited dreamed up a way to convert plastic back into oil, reducing carbon emissions in the process. With all the plastic in the world still in existence, and peak oil on its way, plastic (and a machine like this) may soon become one of the world?s most prized commodities. Conceived by Akinori Ito with the Blest Corporation, this machine can handle all kinds of plastics including polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene. And they can be made in various sizes from small to large that can be used in a range of applications (personal to industrial). Nearly one in five UK citizens 'to survive beyond 100'
wjfox replied to wjfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
By the time I reach 100, they will probably have found a way to halt the ageing process altogether. They're already doing experiments with mice. See for example: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/nov/28/scientists-reverse-ageing-mice-humans (not a complete cure - but a significant breakthrough) -
The DWP estimates there will be at least 507,000 people aged 100 or over by 2066, including 7,700 people aged 110 or over - so-called super-centenarians. Currently 11,800 people in the UK are aged 100 or over and fewer than 100 are over 110. The government figures suggest that of the more than 10m who will go on to reach 100, 3m are currently aged under 16, 5.5m are aged between 16 and 50, and 1.3m are aged between 51 and 65. Despite continuing tensions, there won't be a war between North and South Korea. Food and energy prices will get noticeably higher, with oil hitting $100/barrel by the summer. Continuing protests/riots over government deficit plans. At least two more countries will be bailed out by the IMF. A major bank or corporation will collapse (possibly as a result of WikiLeaks). Evidence for global warming will continue to pour in, with Arctic sea ice reaching another new low, and record high temperatures in a number of countries during the summer. A major new website will be launched - achieving the same level of popularity as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter - and becoming yet another Internet craze that we'll all be talking about. 3D TV will see exponential marketshare growth. USB 3.0 will enter the mainstream, offering 5 Gbit/s transfer speeds. Most of the new mobiles and other devices will begin to incorporate OLED screens as standard. NASA will retire the Space Shuttle fleet. Various natural disasters, accidents, terrorist attacks, etc...
