My son went to St Olave's - we live in Penge - and boys travelled there from West Dulwich.

A lot of former ED residents now live in Penge. It's well served for pubs and transport but could do with more choice on the restaurant front. A non-Italian/pizza/Indian option would make a killing.

Alex pub's kitchen has been up and running for a while now and the food has proved very popular. Surprised that somebody took offence in the Nurseries. The owner and staff are amongst the nicest people I have ever met. I suspect it sells more coffee and cake than plants but is terrifically popular. I popped in on Sunday and the queue to be served was about 10 people long so I gave up.

Note it's mainly a takeaway with a tiny seating area (10 people max). Lovely people run it and really great food but it's very small.

I do live nearby. The conservation area with the 5 cute roads of cottages are there plus the almshouses. You've also got the Alex pub and Nurseries for beer/food and cake/coffee/plants on your doorstep. In general terms, everywhere that side of the High Street is good, the other side can be hot and miss.

You lucked out, KidKruger. That's the best takeaway/restaurant in Penge imho

The service from Penge East is pretty good compared to some lines. Not many cancellations, though there are often delays of a few minutes. The trains can get crowded though as more people have moved away from zones 1 and 2 but work centrally. Penge East is often the last station where you can still get a seat.

My son went to St Olave's and we had a similar choice a few years ago. His best friend chose Wilson's. Both are exceptional so from an academic point of view there's little to choose between them. My son is a big football fan and St Olave's is a rugby school, which was a shame as he didn't get to play till the sixth form. Wilson's does have football throughout the years. It appeared that the homework piled on Wilson's boys was far greater than St Olave's and we always got the impression that at St Olave's they expect the boys to be very driven. Those that aren't, like my son, and just drift along didn't seem to be pushed as hard as I might have expected. My son is now 21 and came out with a very decent set of marks and has made many friends who he's kept in touch with. Bullying is pretty unheard of there. Ultimately the choice of school for us came down to the journey. We live in Penge. St Olave's is 20 mins by train then 15 mins walk from Orpington. The journey to Wilson's was longer and involved either a tram or train followed by a bus, then a 10 minute walk. Good luck with either.
